Toby Alderweireld

Back to signing Toby or not, would be much happier buying Lenglet or De Ligt for the prices been quoted. I was well up for signing him before, but I think tops 40m - probably less with the contract situation. Hope it either gets resolved or we move on quickly, certainly more important areas to focus on, but there is no doubt he'd still improve us.

He is a very good player and if you do buy him I think you will agree he is the best cb in the league, will marshall the defence and let you have a higher line... I understand why you think 75m is high but he is the lowest risk signing you could make the others linked may or may not be able to cope with the PL.

I hope we don't sell to you and are able to extend his contract as anything else is weakening our team.

If our transfer budget would allow (We need an top-class right-winger like Bale, top-class starting left-back like Alex Sandro and another CM) us to spend 60-75m for Alderweireld then we should 100% do it because

1) It's obvious Mourinho doesn't trust our CB's and we have not a single starting CB in our squad like a top team must just have (Everyone had his period under Mourinho).....Alderweireld would be that.

2) In my opinion Alderweireld is the best CB in the Premier League (Well actually it's Kompany if he wouldn't get a injury every month).

3) Yes it's a lot of money for his situation but if we can get at least three good seasons (maybe even more) out of him then it will a positive investment!!!

Sounds logical, it's not an area we need to look at right now and we can get a cheaper and equally good as player as Toby for half the price.

Most United fans I know quite like Spurs. I remember a couple of my close mates going against the grain and wanting you to do Leicester the other year.

Man City fans traditionally disliked Spurs because of Ricky Villa final and saying Spurs gave them a good pasting off the pitch in the drawn first tie (Spurs won on the replay).

There's anti-Spurs sentiment on here sometimes but I would say that is pretty much 100% down to GlastonSpur, always been an irritant on here.

Reported names like Varane, Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly and Skriniar are not much cheaper to Alderweireld.

The appealing thing about Spurs is that they’re not arsenal or chelsea.

Seriously, that’s the best thing about them

I hope the board veto a move for Alderweireld.

It's criminal for Jose to spend £60m on two prospect centre backs, not play them, and then spend £50m on an established CB.

I know it's fashionable to blame our lack of penetration on Smalling's lack of skill but really the problem is further upfront. Would rather have the money spent on a RW or attacking player.

Spending almost a 5th of your stadium cost to buy him? Pull the other one spurs you’re having a laugh

The stadium cost is c. £850m. One fifth of that is £170m. I don't think even Levy is asking for that much.

I don't even think he's all that. We should buy someone younger without all those injury concerns hanging around. It isn't worth paying 70 million for Alderweireld.

Let's buy 29 year old defender who is not in starting XI for bargain price like £30M not 50 or 70M

We have to play the long game here. Reports are suggesting that Levy wants £75m for Alderweireld. Everyone knows that Alderweireld wants to leave and that he has a £25m release clause in his contract next summer. Levy will budge eventually and will accept closer to £50/55m later in the summer imo, so if we really do want Alderweireld, we'll have to wait a month or so.

Tbh he is in Russia atm, I never thought he would be sold till after the World Cup, most national teams wouldn’t allow that sort of thing going on in camp.

Yeah true. Also, Mourinho likes to do his transfer business done early, so no surprises if Levy asked for something as ridiculous as £75m for it to be done before the world cup.

Happy this one seems to be dying of death. Dont want to see Jose spunk out on yet another CB. He should be forced to sell 2 before he is allowed to bring in another.

Think we should put a deadline. If no meaningful talks by then, forget it.

He's not even an elite CB. Might be a notch up the chain of the rest but considering they are an average bunch thats not a bad thing. Can someone tell me why we didnt go for Laporte? Serious question

Are you joking? We were lucky Smalling had an off season from his injuries or we would be down to the bare bones yet again.
Imagine selling 2 defenders and relying on Jones to come in off the bench.
Can Matic play CB?
We are stocked with CB on paper only. If José can get an upgrade then go ahead and do it, don't veto it because we have Rojo in fecking reserve.

There's no way Alderweireld at 29, with only one year left before he can be bought for 25m, is worth more than 40-45m in this market.

He's an excellent CB, but he's not worth spending crazy money on. His position is RCB, that's where he is most comfortable. But we have Smalling , Jones and Bailly that are also most comfortable in the same role (and don't have a left foot).

We need a CB who is comfortable playing as a left sided CB. Clearly Koulibaly is the best choice out there in that role. Vertonghen has had a great season and would also be a better signing than Alderweireld IMO.

He has a clause that lets him leave for 25 million next year.

You completely contradicted yourself. We are stocked on paper you are absolutely right. Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Lindelof and you want us to sign another. Jose has already signed 2 CB;s and according to his team selections in the second half of the season, got those signings wrong. Woodward needs to reign him in and tell him to chop two off those list first

Are you seriously implying Bailly was a bad signing? He's a powerhouse and a future PL XI regular. Not necessarily disagreeing with your actual point but come on now.

I'd only trust Smalling and Lindelof to play a full season from that list and Smalling hardly ever does that.
Bailly seems to miss months a time for us while Jones constantly picks up injuries out of nowhere.
If Jose was offered a chance to sign a quality CB then I would be furious if the board said no because we had Rojo, Blind and Tuanzebe in our squad.
Do we need a cull? I"d say yes but it can't be a prerequisite on if we can buy a serious upgrade.

45-50 mil tops, take it or leave it, if Spurs dont play ball let him stay there and go for 25mil next year. VVD was so pricey due to age and ability. But a couple of CB's have to go if we are going to bring in someone like an Alderweireld, Jose's signings have not been so bad, you could argue Lindelof is a miss but Baillly is surely a hit. Rojo and one of either Jones or Smalling are surely getting moved on? I dont think Tuanzebe enters the discussion too much, he will be one for the future and maybe make an appearance in the cups. CB's Lindelof, Bailly, (Jones/Smalling), Alderweireld, that looks ok to me.

Liverpool paid a premium for a player who will be at the heart of their defense going forward for the next 5 years. Alderweireld has a good couple years left but should not be anywhere near the price bracket of VVD.

No I said according to Jose's team selections Bailly was not a good signing. Cannot be considered a good signing if you cant get a game. Whatever the reason Jose preferred Smalling and Jones, thats a fact.
