Titanic tourist submersible missing | Sub's debris found - crew "have been lost"

Jokes and dehumanising aside, it must be terrifying being trapped down there with probably little hope.

So to summarise:

- They have less than 23 hours of oxygen left
- The banging noises are likely coming from the sub
- The Canadian Navy are on the way to help with divers and mobile pressure chambers (or whatever it's called)

I wonder how deep down they are? Could the sounds be picked up from several kilometers down? And in any case, saving them from 3800 meters deep will surely be impossible now even if they somehow could pinpoint their exact location?

These 7 different methods have been mentioned to one journalist...but there is little sign of them on the pictures shown of the vessel so far. (I really hope I am wrong here by the way). One of these methods was to rock the ship from side to side (from inside it!) and "dislodge" the u shaped weights from their location on the "feet" of the vessel.

The letter the New York Times has unearthed from 2018 is a massive red flag to me - in the letter the company was apparently at the time claiming the vessel met and exceeded standards before they had even applied to have it evaluated. I think we are in Barnum and Bailey territory here!
It all sounds very much like “we don’t need food safety certificates, I eat beef from x and it’s perfectly fine”

The sound signal being picked up by a buoy close to the surface could mean the sub itself is near or at the surface, he added.

Below about 180 metres, the water temperature drops very rapidly. That creates a layer that the [sonar signal] bounces off. But if you’re in the same depth water it tends to go quite straight.

I cannot imagine anything as terrifying as what these people must be experiencing.

Not saying VR might not be the superior experience but for me the real thing still has something that makes it inherently more exciting.

Precisely. While I would never go in this sort of vehicle, I do sort of understand the kind of thrill and adrenaline rush of being somewhere that isolated and remote and staring out at the Titanic.

Has it been reported how many successful trips this vessel had taken prior to this trip?

That French pilot has reportedly been down to the wreck 37 times. Unclear how many of those were with tourists though.

More evidence that there is absolutely zero correlation between being rich and being intelligent.

Small point, but why is it painted white? Makes it extremely hard to spot if lost on the surface.

I would assume they are either on the surface or near it so are fully conscious and aware they have 96 hours of breathable air.

That would be horrifying as the clock ticks down and you are aware nobody knows where you are

Inside the last 24 hours now I wonder at this point the others would be thinking we are all screwed and it's the Owner's fault lets give ourselves some more hours of air

Why not just dive back down? Do they not understand how submarines work
With old style non-nuclear subs they can only travel so far fully submerged. I suspect these guys surfaced as their batteries were running out. They need to spend time at the surface running engines to charge their batteries and may have just hoped to sneak away as they can also usually travel faster at the surface.

The batteries were primarily used for travelling slower in submersible mode as they are quieter than having a huge diesel engine chugging away. In the movies of course the subs are portrayed as always being in the depths, but in reality they spend most of their time near the surface.

That was interesting. I feel like I learned something :)

If they were at the surface, would their phones not be working as normal? I would find it hard to believe that not a single one of them brought a phone with them.

Doubt there would be service

Didn't they say at the outset that they have to use Starlink as there are no mobile phone masts for hundreds of miles?

Come on man, what cell towers are there in the North Atlantic.

He might be of some use though given the situation and his probable higher experience with the sub.

That wouldn't my state of thinking at this point. The only way of finding him useful is as a battering ram.

Apparently the banging noises were coming at regular intervals that you would expect from someone who knows what to do in that situation like that french navy guy

As grim as the whole situation is the dynamics at play would be fascinating. I guess something like this happening is a real leveler both socially and financially.

Predicting now that in the inevitable film version there will be a cliche fakeout ending where the last survivor thinks he's been rescued but then we see it was all an oxygen deprived hallucination.

True. Filthy rich folk wasting millions on a bizarre trip to the depths of the ocean...being trapped still is horrifying.

If the tapping is from the sub, it makes this so much scarier.

What do they have now? 20 hrs left?

I doubt it. First of all the most experienced persons in there would encourage everyone to stay calm to preserve oxygen, a fight to death would take up a lot of that I'd imagine. And also you don't wanna come out of that thing as a murderer in the unlikely event that you're being rescued either.

Only thinking here they're saying 20 hours or so but with the experience there one has done forty or so dives maybe he would know how better to conserve oxygen giving them a lot longer maybe.

They have oxygen but what about ac? If the systems failed, it could be like an Ace Ventura situation in there, and they wouldn't be able ot think rationally.

Erm ok. I wasn't suggesting a fight to the death. Meant more in terms of anger being directed at the crew/pilot and maybe people throwing their weight around because they're rich.

Thought the exact same. I can’t imagine the fear going through their minds. Someone can just snap and just attack.

If it wasn’t for the sound/tapping picked up by sonar, I’d have guessed they had died a day or two ago. Who’s to say they hadn’t lost contact because the submarine just imploded/compromised.
