Looks a great attacking threat but at the same time looks poor defensively. Can't see his future being in defence.

I struggle to think of a teenage full back who has solid positioning at such a young age. POsitonally, full back is among the hardest to master, and even the best full backs still find themselves out of position in games. I'd doubt it's even his long term position anyway. Glad to see him getting minutes on the pitch regardless.

I'd rather see young, raw players like him make mistakes than see fully-fledged internationals like Darmian and Rojo be utterly underwhelming.

I agree with you, I'm just making the point that that performance is used so much to say he could possibly turn out to be a right back. I think you can play him there, and of course he is young and will improve, but as you say, his position isn't there. I would really like to see him get some games at CM.

I am not basing my opinion on this match. I have seen him against Everton in the FA cup semi-final where i thought he was poor.

He looks nervous, which is a bad sign.

I agree. I think he could be offering a lot more than Schneiderlin currently is in a midfield 3.

Has the smarts and physique to play in the back and not get bullied, but it really does seem like he's made for midfield

he is not a rightback and i wish we stop playing him there.....saying that, im happy he is on the pitch.

Please dont give up on him, just needs to find a different position.

So you're basing it off two matches?

One of the few who really might benefit from a good loan.

I think he will stay in Mourinho's bad book for awhile after that horror show.

Hooked and everything.

Unlucky not to score though.

By no means writing him off on one game, but there won't be many games where we can afford to risk that shite again

I doubt we will see him again unless we are winning 4-0 or something. Before he got caught in possession for their penalty, he was caught out for pace and hes supposed to be one of the quickest in our squad. He looked nervous and this is Northampton. Try him midfield, but i would question his mentality.

love the slating in this thread even though there were at least 2 of the more senior players out there that were much worse.

just feel for him, he's not fullback. He's easily DM and I've been saying it form the very beginning, just play him there and you will see how beastie he is, occasional positinoal mistake might happen from the beginning but it won't come that costly there, let Carrick retire and make it between him and Schneiderlin till the end of the season but ffs dont play him as fullback..

still would take him there over Darmian

The way our younger players get slated on here for every mistake they make you'd think they should be playing like a senior pro in his prime every time the minute the walk on the pitch regardless of their age or match sharpness.

God knows where the likes of Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Ronaldo, De Gea etc. would have been had some of the people on here been in charge of our team!

Jesus one game!! Come on don't players of that age need a run in the team! He's a beast games gone by he should have been in before Valencia. Oh no let's put him in for a game then hammer the hell out of him, drop him and then sell him! Jesus football gets right on mi tits sometimes!

Lets not exaggerate.

I've thought the same. Gary Neville certainly wouldn't have made it, maybe even Beckham.

It's one of the negative aspects of modern day football. Zero patience. Massive judgement.

He was decent. Not everyone is gonna time EVERY tackle perfectly. Even the best get out dribbled.

He was unlucky not to score with that header.

For me hes a midfielder.
As a RB he reminds me of Micah richards, in that hes positionally poor (which is to be expected, its not his position) but his pace and power can bail him out.

I do worry that he will be a jack of all trades, but not a specialist in one position.

The talent and potential is there....Big time! The issue is more mental than physical right now. Can't switch off like that, at any level

Give it 3 or 4 seasons and he'll be cruising down the right road

I was honestly surprised he was that passive while defending. He's not usually like that.

I don't think he's a rb either, but it's not due to this game. Maybe he still becomes a good rb in the future despite my wanting of him to be used centrally. Who knows really as he's still 18.

I dont know if he is a DM, since he barely played there. But he is a better CB than RB, thats for sure. I dont think we will see him anytime soon again, unless injuries happen.

Being part of the first team isn't doing him any favors. It requires more than physical development to be a part of the first team. He is extremely raw and should develop his football under the guidance of Joyce. Needs regular game time rather than a league cup game every two months.

Couple of years away from the first team.

He bottled it if you ask me. He totally went into a shell after his mistake. Talented lad but not ready for first team football here. Maybe a loan this January.

I don't think the lack of games has helped him. He looked very nervous from the first minute, never really brought the ball forward and just kept passing square to smalling.

He was hesitant going forward and didn't time it well, and defensively he was shocking I am sad to say. twice they got passed him far too easily, first when they hit the bar and again for the penalty.
He had 2 opportunities to get rid but failed on both. I actually thought Jose would hook him at HT.

Obviously though he's very young, early days or him yet but at this rate he's not ready. Strange how he did so well when he came into the first team under LVG, maybe was playing on adrenaline.

.
I don't think that showed he was nervous. That's something he always does as a rb. He's not that much of an attacking player, which is why I don't see him as a rb. The extent of his attacking ability is to drive forward with the ball after winning an interception, but that is dependent on the amount of space he has to work with. Occasionally he can put in a good ball.

His defensive action was more of a hint towards nervousness if anything as he was really passive.
