Timo Werner to Chelsea

Two very good signings for Chelsea so far on paper. Top 4 is getting so much more difficult to get into never mind winning the league again. Not sure why so many on here are so sure we are getting Sancho either, what have I missed exactly?

Also I read on this thread that we got an early signing in January when we signed Bruno, surely we signed him 5 months late...but good spin on it I guess. What I do know is we still need quality additions, I for one have not forgotten how bad we have been for years now and even during this season.

Hopefully we can keep Pogba and sign Sancho although I'm not confident in either, especially if we once again fail to get CL football. We can't afford to dither about this upcoming window either way.

Chelsea quietly building a very decent squad.
Yep, if they can get Chilwell for LB then they're looking nice on paper.

If we get Sancho then I can see us and Chelsea being the top 4 challengers next year.

Think Arsenal/Leicester/Tottenham/Wolves will battle out for the rest.

I'm not sure how its spin about Bruno. It was a great piece of business at a great price. You can argue we should have got him in the summer but he's here now and he's saved us an additional headache, and not impacted on next season's budget, by bringing him in when we did

Chelsea had a free run for him with Liverpool opting out of the deal. So I guess that leaves us the only club running for Sancho now. Silver lining I guess.

Good players but both are a pretty slight builds. I think Chelsea will have a physicality issue with Ziyech, Werner, Mount and Pulisic in the same side. Kante and Kovacic are both good players but neither are tall or strong. Defending set pieces could be a nightmare.

The physicality argument is overplayed IMO. We've seen physically unimpressive attackers tear up defenses in the PL time and time again. Set pieces are overrated as a genuine threat as well. How often does a lack of physicality really lead to the other team winning games on set pieces?

A lack of physicality is a reason why Chelsea are struggling now. Its why defensive blocks frustrates them and points to how their form picked up when Girouds form peaked before the break.
If they arent dribbling past 3 players to swing in a pin point cross to little Pedro, Willian or Kante then they struggle and its impossible to be consistent in doing that

Surprised people think Chelsea have a good squad, don’t think they have many stand out players at all. Not sure who in their squad id take at Utd.

I thought they had a good squad but when you put it like that I'd only take Kante and the potential Werner.

This. At some point we had Pogba, Matic, Lukaku, Smalling and Fellaini starting but were never great at both scoring and defending set pieces we were average at best. On the other hand man city didn't have a bunch of six footers but still walked the league.

Even Kante is past his best and hasn’t added anything to Chelsea this season and as I put before, Werner has it all to prove for me still.

I think that's more because we have a better squad than our fans choose to admit

Kante has had injury problems since playing injured in the Europa league finals last season.
The few games he played this season like the super cup against liverpool, he was immense.

I would pick our defense over theirs except for Rudiger who would replace Lindelof. Kante over Fred. Pogba over Kovacic. Bruno over Mount. Rashford over Pulisic. Martial over Abraham. Willian over James. Only three players from their starting 11 I'd say are better than ours

This isn't done yet. People are jumping the gun.
Yes it is, I swear you boys are ridiculously efficient at transfers. I know it’s probably confirmation bias on my part but I rarely see you involved in long sagas.

Remember when Werner said he likes us in the past. Or when he wants to play under Klopp. Ends up at Chelsea playing for Lampard

Would take Mount over Lingard as our top youth midfield prospect.

Yeah gotta agree I wish we were able to complete transfers like this, instead we end up with long drawn out sagas

I agree - it's a well balanced squad but they don't have too many top class players in their squad. Kante was one of them, but injuries and form have impacted him.

That said, with a good manager, I think their squad does have very good potential.

Werner, Ziyech, Kovacic/Kante(assuming fit) is all top level.

The rest I agree. Can get at their defence really easily especially under Lampard. Their problem for me was 2 fold - 1) focal point of attack for goals and 2) a poor defence.

I think they've only fixed 1). Will be interesting to see if they go for any defenders now. Doubt it after Ziyech and Werner.

Glad we stayed away. Not exciting to be a second choice for investing into a 50m player.

Also, I don't think chelsea are interested in Sancho. LB is their bigger need than RW. Next in line is I think Chilwell and a backup GK.

And yet you include Ziyech as a Summer signing, despite Chelsea trying and failing to sign him in January, leading to no incoming players whatsoever...

Little quibble about words here, but if chelsea and Manchester United are clearly above the other top 4 contenders, are we really contenders? Or clear favourites

In an article on 'The Athletic' today

They say that Ole met with Werner however United were only prepared to pay the release clause if a buyer was found for Pogba

It also says, which was widely reported, that Werner met with Klopp a couple of times and had various texts to him. Liverpool have said the decision wasn't a financial one and that he was mainly to be used as a sub and introduced to the starting 11 in January 2021 with Mane & Salah away to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Basically no one else was really that interested then. Makes sense.

Up until about a month before COVID this entire forum was absolutely trashing the entire United squad bar 2-3 players, just about everyone wanted Ole out because he was in way over his head, and you were playing arguably the worst football in the entire PL. There were times when posters were literally suggesting you sell everyone other than Rashford and a couple others.

Now suddenly you have this monster squad that's vastly superior to Chelsea's. :wenger::wenger::wenger::wenger:
I'd swap Bruno for Mount and Maguire for Cristensen/Zouma/Tomori, but I wouldn't swap anyone else. Your very good form happened to coincide with our poor form (which we were starting to turn around before the virus) which seems to be clouding the minds of quite a few here.

Crazy crazy post when you consider how weak you've been in goal and at the back.

The interesting thing about this is a team that is playing the worst football in the entire PL sit 3 points behind Chelsea with a better goal difference?

Still in the EL and FA cup.

You wouldn't have Pogba at Chelsea?

What a nonsense post. Typical Chelsea fan.

Before Bruno. Our defence played itself into form with Bruno adding a spark up top. 11 games without a loss with 2 goals conceded, which were 2 keeper howlers, does bring a lot of confidence.
Not swapping Tammy for Martial or Rashford for Pedro is a bold move. Chelsea fans even hate Willian so you would keep him over one of the top prospects in European football in Greenwood?
Henderson is still a United player, not taking Pogba doesnt make sense.
Seems like youre a bit defensive? You should be happy, youve made 2 good signings.

As for the first half of your post - The caf is a fickle place for sure.

The second half of the post - I'd swap a fair few more than you mentioned and I still think we are a slightly better squad as of this season.

After months away from this forum my biggest surprise since returning is the feverent certainty by many of United signing Sancho.

Neither Martial nor Rashford play the same position as Tammy so I wasn't even considering them for that role. As much shit as Willian gets he's been very good this season. To compare him to Greenwood (who again plays a different position) is a bit disrespectful.

Pogba I honestly, genuinely forgot about since he hasn't really played this season. I'd have him or Bruno as a #10.

And I'm not being angry or defensive, it's just funny how night and day opinions of your squad are now compared to earlier.

Anyways, I'm done discussing this and derailing thread. Back to Werner.

Liverpool have dropped the ball here. This guy could have transitioned their current squad into a re-build.

Excellent signing for any PL team, he could be Chelsea's next Hazard.

Martial is a number 9.

Since Liverpool have become a legit elite side there's a gap in the market for a team that seem to get better in the period not much football is played.

Looks like the gaps been filled.

Weird, ManUtd players actually become useless on caf when they are injured, poor comparison.
