We are going head to head with a sunny european giant, time for Woody to walk that "I dont want the best players going to spain" talk.

Thats if TV fits into the worlds best player part lol..
 
Wenger seems awfully reluctant to send us Vermaelen. We sent him a center back who can play at left back once.
 
I'm sure he was a backup to Hummels. Hummels seems impossible this season. Good CB when fit. Let's hope LvG gets him off the treatment table for good and the best out of him. That's if we sign him of course...
 
A good ball Centre-half in the premier league, with proven leadership skills on the international level. Now if LVG can do to him what he did to Arjen Robben, we'll have quite the player perfect for our system.
 
4 crocked CBs are better than 3, I guess.

He's a good player, his only problem is that he's never fit.

Not a muppet dream signing, tho. :D

Ahh well, rather him than our current crop of crocked defenders I suppose.
 
He ticks quite a lot of boxes, the only concern i have is his fitness. If he can stay fit i think he'd be a bargain at 10m.

Ron Vlaar was easily the best defender in the WC! I can't believe I said that about Ron Frickin Vlaar! It's Vermaelens injury record and the price that's making me nervous at the minute. I'll have to defer to LVGs wisdom on this one because it may turn out to be a stroke of genius. A bit pricey at the minute though. One thing I can't believe is that we are in a bidding battle with Barca for Thomas Vermaelen?!? Bizarre!

That is the reason why half the forum is against his signing. Injury prone! Why add another one to our already existing list?

It might be the only reason Arsenal are willing to sell him to us though. Even if Koscielny and Mertesacker are their first choice, a fit Vermaelan would be a useful squad player to them.
 
I think he'd be a brilliant signing actually. Schooled in the Ajax tradition, aggressive, good on the ball etc. Any defensive frailties that he has will be helped by playing in a three man defence as well.

I'd be pleased if we get him.

I did say it was a concern of mine.

But everyone seems to be acting as if we're signing Titus Bramble.
 
His injury record is one concern but is he really a good enough defender? obviously not good enough for the Arse starting 11, so i would also question his quality. We should be going for the best players not Arse rejects.

But i guess we have to trust LVG on this one if it happens.
 
I must not be as familiar as some people when it comes to Vermaelen. I know his injury rate is poor but I always regarded him as a pretty solid centre back.

He had a couple of outstanding seasons a few years back but since then he's been allmost permanently crocked/not playing first team football and the chances he did get to play he had a few howlers. This signing worries me considering he's injured again as we speak.
 
Solid option if fit. Would give us more depth for sure and allow some space for Smalling and Jones to develop further as well. All for it if his injury troubles are behind him. LVG probably has some sort of knowledge regarding this otherwise I doubt he'd make a move for Vermaelen.
 
If this one goes through I wouldn't be surprised if Wenger stalled it all the way to deadline day just to disrupt things. Hopefully we only give him a 3 year contract.
