I don't know how highly you rate him but I doubt we'll get anyone in worse than Vermaelen. I don't think he'd have improved our first 11. Sure we need the numbers but even when fit I don't think he's all that good.

Whats that got to do with playing 2 at the back? Of course going into a game with Smalling (who is currently the best defender on our books imo) plus our 3rd or 4th choice centre back is not ideal, but thats true for any club.

Anyway, unless I missed Van Gaal saying 'we're definitely playing 3-5-2' the only quotes I've ever seen from him on the matter have been on the subject of the 3-5-2 suiting our current options better and him preferring a 4-2-3-1. I wouldn't go anywhere near saying thats LVG confirming we were playing 3-5-2/
