I'll be suprisied and quite impressed if Vermaelen really rejects Barca and immediate CL football for us. If that's the case sign him up Woody.
I wouldn't be surprised if he rejects Barca for us for 10,20k more per week.

Money might be a factor but i can't see it really affecting his decision much. If he rejects Barca for us it will be down to LvG, RVP and the Premier League more than anything else.

LVG wanted to give a chance to all, watching and rate them only after the preseason.
I know.. I was just talking about how its our bad luck.. Can't blame woodward either, just our luck with the WC, Holland making the semi's and other teams signing players early..

Well, there's also the likelihood of much more game time with United than Barca.

Manchester United have moved back in front ofBarcelona in the chase to sign Arsenal defenderThomas Vermaelen. Barcelona looked to have taken pole position in the race to sign the 28-year-old Belgium international on Tuesday when they made a bid of £10million for the player. However, Sky sources have revealed that United are Vermaelen’s preferred destination and they will have no problem matching or beating Barca’s offer.

We are in a bidding war with Barca over....Vermaelen? I mean he's a good defender but both of us should be aiming higher.

At least we have the excuse of having three young and potentially very good CBs and Vermaelen can be cover/add experience to what we have. Why are Barca in for him??! They haven't bought a defender in so long and they've been crying out for one...then they buy Vermaelen? Strange.

I am sure Barca fans would have said the same thing about us last season. "United have not bought a midfielder and ages and then they overpay for..... Fellaini"! :p

Loads of multi-trophy winning football managers in this thread...

I'd say LvG has already shown enough to deserve the right to buy a player without the fans throwing their toys out of the pram.

In any case, I'd say TV's injuries and poor form are over exaggerated. He's a good player.

he would not be my first choice, but I think if he can stay fit he could do a decent job for us.
His experience would be good.
And thats a big if.. Can he stay fit though I think he'll be a good player.

I don't see anyone 'throwing their toys out of the pram', merely indicating their lack of enthusiasm for the signing.

If he can stay fit, I think he'd be a very good addition. I don't think a player just stops being injury prone though. I can't see him just having a resurgence of fitness where he can play 40 games a season. Seems daft to pay £10million for an injury plagued centre back when we could pay £20million for a top class centre back.

How many minutes did he manage in the World Cup before limping off?

I want Ingo Martinez.... Lets build a Spanish spine in the team
Inigo, Ingo is a german name, and a bad one too.

He's 23 and didn't look that good last season, good on the ball though, depends on the price I guess.

It is typical of the transfers, the players we want we never get, the players we know are not good enough we get. It happened with fellaini, we all knew he was not united standard but he was bought anyway, with with this case we all know his injury record, yet the club is persisting on buying a crock

Allot of the time in recent years that has been the case with united transfers, it's not going to get us excited, just a meh to we told you so, he's injury prone, or just not good enough

I have stated that I would be fine with Vermaelen coming in, I would hope for under 10m but just looking at the player himself and our needs, I see no problem with bringing him in. He suits the system.

However, if this deal goes through, I can only see it happening very late in the window. As far away from Arsene's plans as he is, Arsene won't want to sell another player to us, he will want him to move to Europe. So I can only see him coming if Arsenal just can't find another buyer for him and decide to cash in late for him.

Who exactly is this top class CB you're talking about?

So, our back-three by January will be Blackett-Carrick-Smalling, if we're lucky and Smalling doesn't get injured?

I think he's a lot better than given credit for. On par with Vertonghen at his best.

Oh my.This is getting serious. I can only think that him being cheap and experienced are the only reasons United are going for him.

Vermaelen, Bebe, Valencia..We seem to be able to beat Barca/Real only when the players in question are average at best.

So you would rather sign no one than Vermaelen? Jaysus I would swear he was a pub team player if I only read this thread..

He's a quality player.. experienced, a goal scoring centre half, good technically. I think he could excel in our new system to be honest.

Vlaar isn't superior to Vermaelen, what are you basing this view on, a few games in Brazil.
yes i would rather have no one then spend a load of money on a player who is rarely fit and has been out of form for two years, and who if he has another injury hit season will probably be impossible to sell. so all where doing is buying a player to sit in the treatment room for the next 3 years and gobble up cash and a squad number.... utter waste of time.

and im basing it on the past two season, where vlaar has been a solid CB and Vermarlen hasn't.

One would presume that since RvP is one of his 'best friends' i football Vermaelen would prefer to join United. One would also presume that the one brightly shining star that was FC Barcelona isnt as sparkly anymore as it was two years ago. If he chooses Barcelona over United then it can purely be motivated by trying himself in an easier league when it comes to defensive work.

It certainly wont have Vermaelan in it at any point.

He will most likely rupture the ligaments in both his knees putting on his socks in the first days training.
