Thomas Muller

Love that line about Carrick in there as well:

Whereas Michael Carrick now seems almost the exact opposite, a player who drifts through matches entirely inside the picture, conscious only of the departing momentum of those around him, like a tanker captain languidly guiding his hull through a matrix of shifting icebergs.

Another excellent article about Müller (and Heynckes). Seriously, why is no one in germany writing stuff like that? It's sad, really.

My personal favorite:
And, showing a more cynical side, the way he gambled on body-checking Alba, instantly playing the percentages in his head: "Worst case scenario? I get called for a foul on Alba. Best case scenario? I take him out and [Arjen] Robben can have a go at goal." Whatever microprocessor is lodged in Mueller's brain weighed the pros and cons, performed the neural equivalent of a cost-benefit analysis, then elected to direct Mueller to take out Alba.

Is there a gif of that scene floating around? I'm pretty sure I could watch it for hours.

No, worst case scenario referee calls it a foul and Muller ruins a perfectly good goal scoring opportunity for Robben.

Why? I can see him making decisions like that, of course it's exaggerated.

Personally dont rate him.

He isnt fast enough or tricky enough to be a proper winger, and doesnt seem clinical enough to be a proper striker.

Could be a decent 2nd striker for somebody but apart from work ethic he doesnt impress me that much. Hes the german james milner in my eyes

I assume you're not familiar with Xavi

Xavi is infinitely more talented than Muller. Muller is one of the best players this season (and has been very good for a few years) but if you look at him he is not that much talented and doesn't have any point of his game which is that great. What he makes him so good is his intelligence.

Are you German revan?

Nope. I didn't like German football till recently.

Strange thing to wank over, dumb brutes in the NBA do it every day without thinking.

Great player. I like his style. Shows you don't need silks or a pretty touch to be a great player.

11Freunde had a really good one maybe a year ago. And the Süddeutsche had a good one this week, too.

He is just special.

-----------

About the block on Alba. I do not know how often Müller got bodychecked by defenders that year - often in the box. I have not seen a penalty because of this the whole year.

Indeed.

No way he actually thought that throgh. It was an instinct. Anyone who plays football at any level does things without thinking about it.

Well, it's still a foul. I really dislike Alba though, that's why I thought it was quite funny. I don't know why that's strange.

Watching a lot of top level football from different nations, including that which Muller has participated in. What are your doubts based on?

For one thing he pales in comparison to Xavi or Iniesta. And that's just naming two. He's very cheaty intelligent as evidenced by that third goal.

He's pretty intelligent but people are going crazy in here. The whole thing about him having limited talent but making it up with intelligence is nonsense. He's quite fast, he has a good shot, his finishing is fine, his dribbling is better than most players, he's very good in the air. Couple all of that with the fact that he's played in the same Bayern side for a few years now and has managed to gel with everyone else perfectly and you got all the ingredients necessary to be a good footballer. He doesn't need some extreme intelligence because he's actually pretty good at football. His vision and awareness are above average but he's not really that special, there are equally clever players out there.

Muller got quite the skillset. Just not the kind of skillset you would call an super fine technician.

I love Müller. Never enjoyed a German player as much. Might be because he won me a lot of money years ago.
Such an intelligent player. In ways he reminds of Raúl. He's my type of player. He'll easily become a Bayern legend if he stays put.

I wouldn't call him the most intelligent footballer out there. But I've never seen a player with comparable off the ball movement. Not only does he attack space, he creates it for his team mates by making smart runs like no one else I know of. He's unique in that way and that's such an important factor for Bayern's attack.

The movement and the positioning. Often trying to get defenders off others. Sometimes making this runs to give the defense and the defensive midfielders time to adjust themselves again.

Whereas the most others just look for their own positioning to be able to make ball movements he usually positions where it is best for the team.

Doing this - and at the same time he averages a goal or an assist about every 90 minutes - without being good against the small teams or taking part in the goal festivals.

He has a weird mentality. He needs 3 or 4 shots for a goal away from home where his teammates have difficulties to score - and about ten for goals at home - only when it is really important he scores at home.

I think the problem a lot have is that they just see the movement of the players on the ball - it is there where the camera is. You sometimes remark his value if you look at the goals of the others. He seldom is not involved in them - seldom just a bystander.

Football is a team sports - not a the sports for a star. It is not only something about the ones that carry the ball.

Muller is a fantastic midfielder, every English man and woman should remember how he was central in tearing England apart 4-1 in the last World Cup.

Read a few articles on Muller and suddenly he's the average footballer but made world-class because of his genius-level footballing brain?

He's the perfect player for the big games. He is intelligent, works his socks off, selfless in his play and strong under pressure. Barcelona struggled with him because he played his tactical role to perfection. When he drifted to the wings, the fullbacks have problems dealing with him because of his physicality. This causes the CBs to step out to stop him which in turn leaves space for his team-mates to exploit.
