I don't think anything Dave's done (including the writing on the ball) suggests anything other than that we're probably interested. I believed Thiago when he said that he wasn't going to think about his future until after the competition was over. Barca may well have received a number of offers triggering the release clause, but I don't think Thiago will have talked to any clubs yet.

I think a World Cup year just provides a convenient get-out for a player who wants to be playing more. It legitimizes the player's decision and is a lot less messy than going on strike or using the media to force a move. Plus, it's certainly true that another season like the one just gone won't help Thiago's cause, and there's no reason to think he'll suddenly get more game time while the same names are in front of him. He might not get in the WC squad, but he has a better chance if he's playing at the top level every week and pretty much no chance if he has another season as a squad player.

He'd likely get better minutes considering he was injured but your point is well taken. Although I'd counter that Tito has stated he will rotate more this coming season, a lesson he failed to grasp as Pep's #2 evidently.

I'd also add that playing away from Spain doesn't enhance your chances of breaking into the Roja squad. In any event, my anger will be directed at the club & Tito if he bolts, not the player - he signed the contract he did when Cesc was rumoured to come back, knowing that he might have to leave to get the PT he believed he earned/deserved. I think he's been mishandled by the club and what happens next should fall on the board & Tito, not Thiago.

We can resign this thread to the pile of others that broke hearts but brought tremendous joy & muppetry to our lives...

True enough. I just don't see why people are getting so exciting though. Nothing he (the player) has done or said would suggest he's coming here; in fact, the way he's been playing it so far would make me think that he's listening to multiple offers and trying to get the best deal from all the clubs interested - and that is where I think we have a problem. Our recent history in these types of competition isn't all that encouraging.

So what ur saying is man - he's coming?

Nice one - welcome to the club where muppets reign supreme aul son :D

David de Gea:

"Hopefully, I'll have a Spanish teammate next year at Manchester United.

Me, and any player at Manchester United would love to have someone like Thiago in their team, which is good.

We've spoken about it jokingly (Thiago going to United),but Barca know they have a star and I don't think they'll let him go."

Then join the muppetry; we have a competent backroom. They'll make some good signings. For starters Hernandez came out of nowhere.

Now imagine Thiago and Kagawa playing one-twos before releasing a through ball to Hernandez. :droll:

to dream
to think the unthinkable thought
to have gone and bought
a midfielder who we actually sought

from page 81 to 103...it's 4:30 am, I'm working at 10:00 am...safe to say I care about this potential transfer more than I should/is healthy.
off to bed now...please don't make me go through 22 pages again when I come back from work tomorrow.
inb4 someone mentions how nobody's forcing me to read this

Barca could easily just offer him a new contract.
They won't. As long as he doesn't move anywhere in the next two weeks, his release clause is going to rise to €90m and he still has a few years left on his current one (3?). Offering him a new deal is pointless from their point of view because all he's after right now is some playing time ahead of the World Cup and he obviously won't get that at Barcelona. I think he's going to leave but it won't be to United, we'll just hang around and be interested for the next two weeks while another club like Milan or City actually make a move and sign him.

Is that real? We could potentially announce Alcantara signing within the next two weeks?

I can't handle the excitement.

It rises on august 1st does it not? That would make it 6 weeks then, because it is only June.

Think of the page number we could be on after another 2 weeks :wenger:

We'll break the Berbatov record by the time the weekend ends at the rate we're going.

They'll offer him a new deal in order to convince him to stay, you Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime.

Perhaps but I'm not entirely convinced tbh. Like Sarni correctly points out, the board could've nipped this scenario in the bud had they improved his terms once he made it clear he was waffling. The club, IMO, can't possibly want to be remembered as the ones that lost Thiago but I'm sure they also didn't want to start a precedent over youth contracts & the wage structure. Will it force the club to save face and give him the bumper deal perhaps his advisors wanted in the first place? Maybe but it may not matter if Thiago actually wanted to move. I'm not sure he's a lifer like most cantera players

20 pages from yesterday and still no real updates?

The Caf will be very sad when he ends up signing a new deal with Barcelona.

Blasphemy will not be tolerated.

on a side note, I haven't actually watched the obligatory YouTube video. But I don't need to to know this is where I want to stay camping.

You realise that most of us are just having harmful fun, right?

It is likely that he'll sign with Barca, but he is showing signs of reluctance-- the existence of the release clause is one. We could have a potentially world class player in a position we've been poor lately. No wonder the caf is excited.

Plus, DdG is acting like a Caf member himself and it's hilarious.

No it is not likely that he will sign a new contract with Barca. Why are you letting the anti muppets control your thoughts?

I thought that Barca were quite rigid with their wage structure? Regardless, the kid evidently wants to play to attempt to get in the Spanish World Cup squad. Barcelona cannot offer him those guarantees. They have offered him them before by way of his release clause. I can't see why that would change now. Thiago can go and play for another superclub and walk into the side. Despite what FC Barca hints at: if Thiago has an immense season for United then I think that he would make into the Spain squad for next summer.

Now that Barca have been toppled from the summit of European football, you won't see as many of the fringe players wanting to stay no matter what. It is the natural state of things. Cesc, for example, was quite happy to stay at Arsenal when they were an equivalent-ish footballing power to Barcelona.
