That's the thing, nothing will change the squad for WC14 under Del Bosque...particularly in terms of the midfield. Only an injury or superlative performance even over the next 6 months but even then it won't displace the first 6 or 7 midfielders ahead of him. That won't change whether he stays at Barcelona or starts for United.
I think a World Cup year just provides a convenient get-out for a player who wants to be playing more. It legitimizes the player's decision and is a lot less messy than going on strike or using the media to force a move. Plus, it's certainly true that another season like the one just gone won't help Thiago's cause, and there's no reason to think he'll suddenly get more game time while the same names are in front of him. He might not get in the WC squad, but he has a better chance if he's playing at the top level every week and pretty much no chance if he has another season as a squad player.
