I wish the club can come out with a statement to rubbish these rumours just like what Bayern alway does. Sick of clubs and agents using our name to bring up the market value.

Yeah. . . but driving up the market value is a good thing for us, isn't it? Our rivals and having to spend more money than they should to get the players they want that have their value inflated due to our association?

There is basically 4 clubs who are always used to elevate prices for top players: United, Real, PSG, Barca, and Chelsea. City is too smart and under the radar to get linked very often.

I think they don’t rubbish the reports because these agents have other players under management, and the clubs need to maintain a relationship. Also, if Liverpool has to pay more, isn’t that a good thing for United?

Of course its good, United have taken 20+ years to get to the position Financially, Liverpool have been successful for 3 years, they are a long way behind.

They can't compete currently and with so many players renewing for Liverpool or due for renewal in 1-2 years they need Thiago to not deviate much from the likes of Salah, Mane and VVD.

Looks like Thiago is Liverpool bound though at this point.

I actually think that we're somewhat crow-barring Pogba into his current role and that the role we have him in would suit Thiago to perfection

If his wage demands are too high for United, surely they’ll be too high for Liverpool? Unless he’s prepared to go there for less money than here? In which case, feck him anyway.

Net Spend FC might have to flog Salah to Madrid to get some reinforcements in.

Full tweet from the guy he's quoting:

"Solskjær has talked to Thiago personally. But for now the wage demands are too high. Way too high.

Solskjær wants players who want to play for United for the 'right reasons', not because of money.

So as of now the situation is: Unless Thiago lowers his wage demands, he can forget about United. The ball is in his court."

The writing is on the ball, you say?

A good approach by Ole. I like that if true

I think that’s the assumption. At 29 years old he’s either after a fair wage at a big club who are competing at the very top (Liverpool), or he’s happy to settle for a club a little behind for more money (us). Which is fair enough, really. Sure, it’s a bit dickish, but this is a business after all. You can understand us not being interested for that reason, and you can understand Thiago’s approach due to the above. Both sides have a fair reason.

Or, his wages are a problem for everyone and that’s why Liverpool are taking so long. But I haven’t seen a Liverpool journalist report that.

Fun while it lasted. At least the muppets learned their lesson from 2013 and didn't get as invested this time.

I don't understand this deal. Where will he play? 6? Is he for depth? That's an expensive depth player if I ever saw one and frankly too good to be sitting on the bench too.

I think the wage bill is not worth it, especially when you have 2 more midfielders in the squad who are there to fill that void.

Well if he can get an offer from us with higher wages he can go back to the scousers and ask for more. I suspect he isnt really bothered about joining us and we are just a bargaining ploy/backup. I don't really mind if Liverpool have to break their wage structure that arguably helps us.

Exactly right or maybe it's high for United and the idea of winning multiple titles with Liverpool is enough to lower the wage demand.

If his wage demands are too high even for us then I can see him leaving on a free transfer next summer.

If that stuff is true, it's not a very convincing argument to present to a player who has known nothing but stellar teams, success and plaudits.

We've to sell ourselves a bit as we are not bargaining from a position of strength (champions of our league or regular features in semi's and finals of the CL), which is literally a first for Thiago to contend with - the first time we were in for him, we were champions, as are Liverpool now; there is a sell to be made to convince players at the peak of their powers and status that we're a 'project' that he's the icing on etc. etc.

Of course, wanting to join is part and parcel, but it's a given. Convincing someone like him is well worth our while.

I tend to agree that we can't just rely on our history and expect players to be honoured at the prospect of playing for United. That said, we have bought quite a few players post-Fergie who clearly came for the wrong reasons. The way I see it, Ole's project is now a long-term one where we accept the possibility of several trophy-less seasons in the hope that we can build a young, hungry team that can eventually bring us back to the top, and make us an appealing option for players of Thiago's ilk again. Waving money in front of Schweinsteiger, Falcao, Di Maria and Sanchez got us nowhere.

If his wage demands are too silly for us, where is he going to go?
Like some others said: It's quite possible that his wage demands are lower when it's Liverpool asking because the prospect of winning trophies sweetens the deal.

Unless Thiago is potentially wanting more from us due to our current uncertain standing in bringing definite success to the club, especially in-comparison to Liverpool and Bayern.

If money is the sole reason he would consider joining us,then its a no from me. We've had too many players here ,post SAF, just chasing the buck.

Sounds like Dybala to me. If it is then stay clear, however good he may be. It's not like we're desperate anyway.

Agreed. If he comes to us, he has to look at us as him being the leader. Pushing our young boy's to the next level. Being what Cantona was for us.

If he’s thinking about the money and his ”new challenge” is actually “final pay day” then we should be able to find a compromise that still blows anything Liverpool can offer out the water.

If he’s taking the view that he would prefer Liverpool for a better chance of trophies but is only human and could be persuaded by huge wages then I’m not sure that we could or would front the money that would be required to gazzump them.

I've no idea where we would look to play Thiago but he is certainly a better utility in the midfield than Bruno. Either Bruno moved further forward to accommodate play to the striker or he's benched in my opinion.

If it's 30 million for Thiago why not just sell Smalling and launch a 50 million pound bid for Upamecano (60 mill euros) which given sales is approximately 30 mill NET spend.

The club has moved on from signing players that only want to come for the money.

These type of players don’t fit Ole’s vision.

It has also proved since SAF retired that signing players that only want a big pay day doesn’t solve anything.

Yep.
Now dont get me wrong because Thiago is a fabulous player and would improve our team tenfold but it would be a risky move if,again, money is the only draw for him.

But I can also understand this from Thiago's pov. In-comparison to Liverpool,or Bayern if he wishes to stay, we're just not at that level. So asking for a potentially hefty contract is understandable. He needs guarantees that we're going to compete.

This is ,afterall, his likely last big move.

All Ole needs to do is video call him and show the 'nos vemos en Manchester" ball. After a few minutes, call in De Gea and let him speak to the camera "hola amigo". Then someone behind Ole should cut onions and make him tear up, joined by De Gea and soon Thiago. Wih this strategy Thiago will even play for us for free because Friendship > Money.

Are we making fun of Liverpool for not buying their way to success now?
Who says they didn't? They broke the transfer record for a defender and a keeper. Liverpool hold their own in the transfer market. Don't get me wrong, since the arrival of Klopp, they've spent wisely but they've also spent over £435m.
The 'net spend' is a dig at the fans, who bang on about it, like they do everything else.

I like the fact that we are targeting quality players. But how do we move on the likes of Lingard, Pereira and probably Fred in case Thiago signs?
Still believe all this talk of United and Thiago is to pressure Liverpool to pay up.

This guy is an incredible CM player, dribbles past people and unlocks defences. Almost like a Hazard-lite. Skills wise, he can potentially be the next Coutinho.

However, if his mind is not in the right place, we should not buy him. Attitude is paramount to building a great team, we should know.

The next Coutinho? This guy is 29 he’s his own player.

Despite the deals for Allison and Van Dijk, their net spend since Klopp came in is extremely low, around 100 million I believe and way below the teams they're competing with. To be honest, I can understand why their fans would pride themselves on that – we would too if it was us.
