Thiago Alcantara at Bayern

Calm down lads its a good sign Moyes just following in Fergies footstepts. We missed out on Zidane as Fergie didnt think he was ready. :) Thiago a friggin midfielder - what the heck are we supposed to do with him? It's wingers, strikers and defenders all the way!! It's over now for whatever reason we didnt get him, lets get the next super talent instead.

The only thing that makes sense here is that we made inquiries but then Pep made the call and so we didn't really go for him after that and it was just a case of Bayern deciding whether to go for him and deciding what to pay for him with taxes and all that.

How do you not get interested in a talent like Thiago when he's available, this is absolutely crazy for me. Even if in the end he'd have chosen Bayern Munich, at least make an effort to approach him no ? At the same time Moyes and co may have known all along that it was Bayern and no other club for Thiago and therefore felt that bidding for him would have been a waste of everyone's time.
It's frustrating though because the transfer of Thiago decreases the chances of Barca selling another midfielder (our real target all along).
I really hate transfer windows, endless rumors, endless lies, shit football

Why would anyone believe Thiago's father over Thiago himself?

Because Thiago's father's words confirmed what the guy from the media firm involved with them and/or Barcelona said. That Man Utd, Bayern and Madrid were interested in him.

Why would Thiago lie? Mazinho was probably using the rumours to secure a better deal for his boy.

What rumours? He's quoted this week as saying we were in for Thiago who's already signed for Bayern. He didn't say anything about the transfer before that.

Because you are fairly confident in getting Fabregas and neither need both players or the complication of pissing off barca doubly by going after both.

Irwin touted fabregas as the target well before the thiago rumours started.

Any saw him play v Hamburg and Mönchengladbach last weekend? He was sublime in front of the back four - playing simple, difficult, long, short passes and generally looked class. Scored a goal with his chest, pre-assisted a fine team goal finished by Mandzukic (lovely high pass to Ribéry) and looked settled already (after two training sessions).

Seriously, I hope that we were interested, because he is that good and unless he's got some severe mentality related issues he will become that much better. He's also an example of exactly what's missing from the United team.

However I do have a feeling that everyone's telling the truth. That his dad did talk to United and the negotiations stalled at some point - maybe over playing time guarantees. Consequently it never turned into a Moyes-Thiago chat about his possible role, or a draft contract with Pep's brother and Thiago's real business representatives.

Let's hope you're right because in the end, if we don't sign Fabregas (I would love to see it happen) then it would reflect badly on the directors and Moyes.

Thiago's actual Spanish interview is here: https://soundcloud.com/rac1oficial/primer-toc-hem-parlat-amb-5

seems to talk about United around 8:30, any of the Spanish speaker want to give a translation as can never trust media translations of quotes!

It's what you've been reading.

He says United didn't speak to him or his representatives.
DdG was just joking around with the ball etc - "players do that" all the time.
He doesn't mention anything about his dad's role as a possible intermediary.

He didn't want to answer questions about Real Madrid.

He would've been brilliant for us. Still gutted we didn't get him/didn't move in for him.

Interested in him is not the same as speaking to him/his camp.

I am not ignoring what Thiago said. The situation is bemusing. Taking what's been said, I think it's inconclusive.

We have shown interest in the past. Nothing came of it because Barcelona didn't want to sell. It's my understanding that until the drop in the clause, we didn't have a realistic chance in signing him. He was on Sir Alex's target list. Apparently, he was not on Moyes. It is disappointing but these things do happen. We're potentially taking a gamble on Fabregas joining us when we could have possibly landed Thiago based on his father's quotes. However, sometimes you have to make these gambles. Moyes favors Fabregas more than Thiago. What can I say?

I don't know, but I am sure if Fergie was showing interest in him that him or people at the club would recommend him to Moyes. I simply refuse to believe that Moyes didn't want Thiago for that price.

Thiago only said we never "talked" to him personally.

Of course we dealt with Mazinho, we said we would make a deal before the Euros.

After the Euros clearly Guardiola waided in, and that was that.

We never got the chance to talk to him directly because we never had the deal done.

Whoever thinks we actually were not interested is trying to kid themselves.

What are you saying?
That we liked him at an early stage?
That we bid for him?

I'm not sure if anyone has been saying we didn't fancy him at all, but there are plenty, including Thiago, saying we never approached them with an offer.
I don't think they're kidding themselves.

Moyes seemed to have his eyes set on Fabregas. Reportedly, there were doubts if Thiago could hack it in the Premier League. Perhaps Moyes wanted to go for someone proven.

The only one who is saying we didnt approach them was Thiago. His father and image rights holder stated the contrary. There is also the misconception that we had to make official contact with Barcelona. From my understanding, once you activate the release clause, there is no need to contact Barca. I doubt the VAT goes to Barca anyway.

It wasn't far up the page, but I hope this explains how I view it.
Prior to transfer, "allowing" these rumors would do no harm when negotiating personal terms. ("United double Thiago's wage!")
After the transfer, is there any need to be evasive in any way?

I also fail to see how you can trigger the clause without making an offer.

Gentleman's agreement. As for being evasive, now he is a Bayern player, perhaps he feels it's best to express Bayern as his one and only choice.

If those clubs deny or never confirmed their interest then there's reason to doubt the above. I simply get the impression footballers seem to follow tact and focus on their current team rather than ones who were interested in them. Unless they're doing it out of spite, I do not really see many examples of players talking about other clubs once joining a new team. I could be wrong.

Yeah, it looks like that, but still we should have tried with Thiago, I'm sure those 20(around) milions menas nothing for us, and that's bargain for a player who has talent to become best midfielder in the world.

Shitty game by Thiago today...

why Pep want him to be bayern's Busquets, no idea, but he only looked dangerous and class when he got onto the opposition half. In his own half, lost so many balls and his tackling is non existent. Kroos looked much more composed and confortable playing from deep.

Where is Martinez? still on holidays?

anyway, the season is just starting...

ps. so many good players in this bayern squad, they HAVE to sell someone...

Didn't get to watch todays game but that is the impression I got from watching the Barcelona game, Kroos was very impressive whereas Thiago came into his own in the final third.

Sweinsteiger has said he thinks he's best as a holding midfielder. So that gives Bayern the option of he and Martinez in that position, Thiago will be released further forward

Didn't see the match but I'd expect that much. Thiago is clearly best as a pure CM or maybe further forward but that might lessen his influence. He might grow into the role better, but what's the point?
