Thiago Alcantara at Bayern

THought he played well again, yeah. Didnt stand out as much as in his previous outings but really didnt do much wrong. Had also a good chance to score. The Barcelona side was a joke though, especially in the second half

Read today that Thiago said that United never spoke with him and Barca never tried to persuade him to stay. Very strange, especially from the Barca part.

@BarcaStuff
Thiago: "I wanted to feel valued and to play more. The club knew I wanted to leave, I waited for them to contact me, but they didn't. Man United didn't talk with me. Bayern was always my first option. Real Madrid tried to sign me? No comment."

Has to be BS. It directly contravenes what his father has said.

Technically they may both be right - we probably only dealt with his father and never spoke directly with Thiago.

Bit of a stupid thing to say really. Why make the distinction between himself and his agent? The reason he didn't talk to Barcelona was presumably because Mazinho decided to do all the talking for him, they obviously didn't just decide "ah, who cares, see ya Thiago".

Yep, an article here, straight from the player now. No agents, dads, press:
http://www.teamtalk.com/manchester-united/8840749/Thiago-United-move-a-non-starter

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara claims Manchester United never made a serious move to sign him from Barcelona.
The 23-year-old moved to European champions Bayern from Barcelona earlier this month, reuniting him with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola - the man who handed him his professional debut in 2009.
A lack of first-team appearances last year activated a clause in the player's contract which meant he could leave Barca for a reduced price, but it seems that was not enough to tempt United.
Thiago's father and agent Mazinho said on Wednesday that his son had been "very close" to joining United, but the Spain Under-21 international appeared to contradict that claim in an interview with RAC1.
"The truth is that in no moment did United come to us and talk to us. It came from the press, it was always a lie," he said.
Reflecting on his decision to leave Barcelona, he said: "It's unfair to say I wasn't patient. The club knew my situation. I waited for them, especially before the European Championships, but they never contacted me. I didn't feel valued.
"I wanted to compete. The club knew that I wanted to leave and they didn't do much to change that.
"Everyone looks out for their interests, I wanted to feel valued and I wanted to compete so I decided to leave the club and join Bayern.
"I was waiting and waiting all summer, there was a point when I had to decide.
"All a footballer wants is to play football and I wanted to play, they [Barcelona] didn't do much for me to stay, so here I am."

That is what graham hunter actually said sort of, that he set up a meeting for us to talk to mazinho and all that.

So Moyes was honest about his lack of interest and it wasn't just to save face.

#InMoyesWeTrust

Yeah, that really does put paid to the story that he chose Pep over Moyes and that was the reason he didn't come here. I've been saying for a while that I suspected that may be the case after Moyes comments.

He probably would have chosen Pep anyway, because it's his old boss and mentor, and the best side in the world at the moment. So it doesn't really matter either way.

OK so now we have established the truth, I ask you football gurus why do you think Moyes wasn't interested? please don't say the clause. He seems to tick a lot of the boxes.

It would be pretty damn stupid of the club to bid for Cesc the very day after Thiago joined Bayern. Why not do it at the start of the window? Which is why I think we had to be interested.

Well here is one quote from Thiago

The truth is that in no moment did United come to us and talk to us. It came from the press, it was always a lie," he said.

So perhaps the quotes attributed to his father were just made up by someone in the press. Not the first time that would have happened during the transfer window.

That's not really relevant. What is relevant is all those who moaned at Moyes for not being able to complete a transfer that we were not even in for.

Perhaps we were in discussions with the players representatives and only got the green light from them at that point.

There is no logical explanation really, he's more then good enough, he'd be a great partner for Carrick, at a great price and he wanted to leave Barca at the age of 22. I doubt we weren't in for him, we were probably just talking to his dad like his dad said yesterday.

What I'm saying is that anyone who moaned about anything to do with this transfer was an idiot. Moaning at Moyes for missing out is stupid because we weren't even in for him. Moaning at Moyes for not being in for him is stupid because if Pep wanted him and was willing to promise game-time, we wouldn't have been able to get him anyway.

I fully agree with you there. I was just having a go at the first group because that includes the ABU's who used us not getting Thiago as a sign the empire was falling.

Tbf that assumes we knew Pep was in for him. I agree that had it been a case of say making an inquiry and finding he wanted to join Pep and then not getting involved further made sense, but if we simply made no approach at all to his agent/dad at the least, personally I would find that surprisingly seeing as he is pretty much exactly what we've been looking for and at a relatively great price. All the stuff about Moyes not being able to attract top players etc was always ott for me.

It doesn't matter whether we knew or not. Pep did go in for him, so we wouldn't have got him either way.

I mean, it might matter if it was indicative of an unwillingness to go in for players like him in general. But we're in for Fabregas, so that's clearly not the case.

i agree with you. if we weren't interested we should have made a bid for Fiberglass as soon as possible. Bidding day after Bayern got Thiago was hm stupid to say the least.

In Moyes and Woodward i trust but their transfer dealings leave me perplexed.

But the point is that Moyes clearly doesn't think this is the case otherwise we would have made enquiries. Ultimately like the decision or not thankfully we follow a club where the manager has the final decision on who to manage and if our new manager didn't want this player then I'm OK with that.

This is pure tripe as I said above. Most likely we were waiting for the green light from Fabregas before submitting an offer. That would have been our lead indicator, not what Thiago was up to.

Well personally would still say I don't know why he wouldn't fancy him. I'm not a Moyes basher or anything like that, I'm just saying this was one of the top prospects in midfield atm, he's a player that we should be looking at. No issue that we didn't get him, or no issue that we didn't say follow up once we knew he wanted to join Pep, but as I said if we didn't make any inquiry at all then I would say that was a questionable decision unless of course they're certain they could get Fabregas but that remains to be seen.

It happens that Farbregas has a valid contract with Barca...they will not let themselves lose two midfielders in one transfer window. Had we made a bid before Thiago left we would have been in much better bargaining position. I'm sure Barca would have been more willing to listen to our offer knowing that a ready made replacement for Cesc was on their books already.

You're sure?????

You're guessing is the reality and most likely talking shite.

I agree that I think we should have had a look at him, but the manager did have a look at him and decided he didn't fancy him for whatever reasons and that's really all that matters.

You can't say this, and then call it a guess!

Well yeah whats done is done as I said just a questionable decision if we really didn't have any interest. The vibe above seemed to be that it would be wrong to say it was a mistake/odd that we didn't try and go in for him regardless of if we knew Pep was interest or not.

My guess is as good as yours bro.

That's the point I'm making. You're blindly guessing at how things were and passing it off as facts and maintaining that you're 'sure' things happened and would happen in a certain way. I know I'm guessing and that's why I never claim to be sure about anything unless.....you know....I'm actually sure.

OK so now we have established the truth, I ask you football gurus why do you think Moyes wasn't interested? please don't say the clause. He seems to tick a lot of the boxes.

I think Moyes said he wanted to buy the right player. Inspite of how talented Thiago is, Fabregas is the right player. He's proven and he's at a good age. We have a ton of youth at the club. Even Sir Alex before he retired, was referring to a an experienced player. I think it's commendable that the club stuck to it's target and didn't just act on impulse.

I think there was interest at some point, but not enough interest to push on with the deal. If the manager thinks the player is too lightweight or has priorities elsewhere then so be it. Maybe he felt that he wouldn't be able to promise him any more gametime than he was getting at Barca, maybe he felt that he was too similar in position to others we have on board already. Who knows anything other than Moyes clearly wasn't suitably impressed by something about the lad.

Wait what

Having an inquiry into one of the best talents in world football would be stupid?

Honestly, it's fecking embarrassing that we didn't try to have a word with him.
