Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

On Steam sale. Seriously debating getting this seeing as it made almost every GOTY list, but I haven't played 1 or 2. Will I miss out on story details? How's the combat in this one? I couldn't get into the combat of 1 at all.
The combat is completely different from The Witcher 1, so I wouldn't worry about that. It isn't something that would make you come back to the game but it's functional. The game world is magnificent and it's full of great characters and story segments. If you have even a passing interest in open world fantasy games it's a must play. It's easily the best I've ever played of that type and among the greatest games off all time. Be warned though: it can be overwhelming and you need to invest a LOT of time into it.

Most people here would recommend getting the game, especially if it is on sale. I wouldn't worry too much about not playing the others. Of course being a sequel, there are going to be references you won't get regarding story and characters but the developers do a good job at reducing this problem. Otherwise, there are plenty of youtube videos explaining the story (I think ign do a good 5 minute one).

When it comes to combat, it's fine. It's not the best aspect of the game and certainly not as crisp as say Bloodborne's but is a million miles ahead of something like Skyrim. It takes a bit of time to get used to as at first it feels sort of clunky and repetitive, but as you get into the game, it starts to feel more fluid and more tactical.

Admittedly, it's not going to be for everyone. It's a bit of a slow starter, mixed in with initial awkward controls and potentially confusing story, can be a turn off. But if you can break through that, it's certainly best game of the generation by a long distance. For me, it's the best game I have ever played because of it's beautiful design, great graphics, brilliantly depicted characters (no game emits such a wit and dark humour as W3, it puts games like DA:I and ES to shame) and awesome amount of quests and content but without getting overwhelmed.

Besides, if it's cheap then you might as well go for it.

Yeah I think I'll just watch a YouTube video to catch up with the story and characters. I've watched a few gameplay videos and the world is the main draw for me. It looks absolutely incredible. I'm hoping that will be what makes the game for me if I end up not liking the combat. I just went ahead and bought the game. Might as well :P

I did love DA:I and everyone says witcher is better so hopefully I'll like it! As I said above, the world looks amazing.

It was the first witcher I had played and I regard it as the greatest game of all time. The story is seperate from the others but is does reference things from the previous games. So you can pick up the story pretty easily and follow it.

Everything about the game is amazing, apart from me being shit at it and not being able to beat the last boss

I tried to play DA:I after it and DA:I was just so massively shit and a pure letdown compared to the witcher.

Man everyone says it's one of the best games of this generation. I should go in with lowered expectations

I really need to get back into this because of the praise it gets.

I stopped playing it after I killed the Griffin, mainly because it was around about the time that Fifa and PES were released.

It didn't wow me, but I guess i've barely scratched the surface?

The Griffin was like the tutorial to the game mechanics.

Whoever gets it for Christmas will have the best present ever. There isn't a single game on next gen consoles that's even close to how great it is.

You need to carry on, big time.

The game is bloody fantastic. But as one poster said, you WILL spend tons of time on it.

Also, I was worried about completing it too quickly and the story ending and my life being worthless. Don't worry about completing it quickly, as it's impossible to complete it quickly anyway

You think you're nearing the end and then realise there is still another 20 hours or so of story missions left. Without a doubt the GOAT videogame.

think I spent over 250 hours on this, spent a good amount of playing post-game even after getting the platinum trophy and then the DLC.

can't wait for blood and wine.

One piece of advice for anyone who's just picked this up during Steam Christmas sales: enable alternative movement. It feels a lot better than the default and it enhanced my enjoyment of the game significantly. Maybe some will prefer the default but at least give it a shot.

Just started playing not too long ago....sometimes when talking to a npc and you have to convince them of something and it gives me the option of using a Delusional talent? Usually level 2....how do I go about getting this?

Levelling up and putting it your skill points/ability points/whatever they're called into the slots which allow it. Level up by doing the side missions.

It's the first tier of the Axii sign. Upgrade it with the ability points from levelling or unlocking Places of Power (plenty of those around White Orchard to give you an early advantage) and put it into an active skill slot. Axii is well worth investing in. In fact almost all of the signs are, it's the best category by far.

It really depends on your build. The most potent is actually maxing out in a decoction build but finding all the various decoctions takes forever and is a bit too much effort. I don't really like full signs too much, I'm a bit typical and went for fast attack build mixed with some decoctions and max Quen.

I keep thinking I should buy this, based on all of the fantastic reviews (despite the genre not being my favourite). But then reading some replies in here make me think I won't enjoy it - all the potions, spells, slots, decoctions, levels etc make me want to switch off.

I love how much freedom it gives you, and how well realised the game world is...but am yet to be convinced.

Anybody know the best way to beat the 'Toad Prince' on the Hearts of Fire DLC? This motherfecker is causing me so much trouble. I can't even get his health a quarter of the way down!

He was a cnut alright.

What I did was get in close, hit him once, then roll away as he spams that belly flop over and over. Took me forever but it worked. Also you use Igni on him when he spews out that noxious gas.

It's not much different to skill points in Ass Creed. I mean, it's not like you're missing out on much ....... oh wait, YES YOU ARE!!

it's pretty easy to avoid all of that though if you want to, the game is very flexible in that regard. If you don't really want to do much with potions and decotations then you can just avoid the alchemy skill tree and do the basics.

Anyway you're not missing out on much only one of the best games ever!

So are the ability points and stuff similar to what is used in Elder Scrolls Online for anyone who plays that?
mm, sort of, not really, but similar logic of levelling up and picking skills to specialize in, yes. Not really far removed from any Western RPG.

So kinda like Fallout as well?

Fecksake why does the EU store have to be so stingy with discounts. NA one gets so much better discounts (yes, I know VAT is included in ours but still)

Fallout 3 maybe, not the simplified Fallout 4 perk tree.

it's easy to pick up but really customizable depending on the path you want to go down.

If you're on before gta or something I'll share play it so you can see what it's like.

It'll have to be from the start so you can do the tutorials. If an hour isn't enough I'll share play again. Although I refuse to share play it for the 6 billion hours it takes to complete it

44 quid with expansion pass (so both paid dlcs). Think game alone is around 25ish

Worth getting it with the DLC for sure.

I actually STILL need to complete it. Somehow got stuck on the last boss and gave up  done it all on the hardest difficulty too :wenger:

Honestly, I don't think it's conventionally RPG-heavy at all. The detailed builds and potion aren't mandatory and only really worth delving into if you want to play on harder difficulties.
