Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Monster decks seems to live and die by the close units. It just takes one well-timed freeze card to deem it obsolete. Nilfgaard units' attack ratings are too low, haven't really seen enough of the Scio'atel decks to judge.

Yep that's very true. Usually it boils down to have biting frost = win, don't have biting frost = lose. If you don't get it you either have to hope for a good scorch or that they overcommit all of their good cards in one round and you can take the other two. I'm looking forward to buildng my own one stacked with Clear Weather's though. Reckon it could be one of the strongest decks to build.

Btw one thing Nilfgaard has going for it is Menno Coehoorn. Probably the best card in the game? At least the best I have seen (and luckily own!).

A fully upgraded Axii makes drowners a joke - just cast it once and you sit back and watch the buggers kill each other

You get both by completing Novigrad Gwent quests. Gerald, you get from Thaler, and Ciri from a scoia'tael band member.

Is the Novigrad gwent quest series different to the Novigrad tournament. I'm not allowed to enter the latter because my deck isn't strong enough.

Yeah it's different. There are two other Gwent quests in Novigrad apart from the tournament. One gives you Geralt, and the other, Ciri.

I was about to point that out. I just tend to avoid using my close range units and when they have stacked up all their cards just throw in a Biting Frost card.

Shame you can't play Gwent online. We could have had a Redcafe Gwent tournament

I think it will come eventually in some form or other. At least I hope so! There is going to be more cards released as well, that's practically a certainty.

Asking Vimmes Vilvaldi if he played Gwent is one of my favourite pieces of dialogue so far.

I'm playing on hardest difficulty (death march?) and just had a fight that justified why, a proper Dark Souls type moment. Some witcher contract to kill a foglet towards east side of Valen in the swamps, what a bastard... He was a boss type mob so didn't show the level but quest was 12 and I'm 9, not saying how many attempts it took but pretty sure I can take on anything after that!

I'm finally getting into it. The world, story and side quests are all good

The controls, and combat is awful though IMO

For me it's not a patch on the likes of skyrim or fallout even the recent dragon age game. But I'm gonna see it through till the end

The quests are way better than Skyrim. Skyrim was basically a load of fetch quests in very similar looking caves. This has a load of varied quests in all sorts of environments.

Yeah I know I've played both

I much prefer controls and combat from skyrim which is an important thing. I liked a lot of the side quests and collectable stuff in it too

Like I said I'm getting into the witcher, just for me it ain't as good as other recent open world games

It pisses all over Skyrim and the only Dragon Age game that comes close is Origins.

This game is the first I've ever seen do forests correctly. They're brilliant.

Combat in Skyrim was just a chore, in this game while not perfect it is actually quite fun. Far, far superior in my eyes. Combined with a much better story, setting and characters, it's really a no contest... and I quite liked Skyrim overall.

Different strokes for different folks though I guess. I doubt I could ever go back to Skyrim after this.

Kiera's quest with the king in the tower on an island is actually a Polish folklore story, a very famous one at that. Some of the references to Polish culture and heritage here are amazing.

Even smaller side quests take around 45 minutes to complete and you're bound to grab one after another because they're just all that interesting. I'm going from town to town looking for notice boards with interesting quests and I'm still yet to touch both the Baron mission and Croockback Bog mission. I'm going to gear up for this, get some more fancy stuff and complete at least 3-4 more side quests and contracts before I go there. It doesn't really matter for story progress in what order I do them, right?

I must have already clocked over 10 hours. Shame there's no stats in this game.

It's miles better than Skyrim which was already a very good game. I cannot comment on this versus Dragon Age but most people have said it's better.

It's the best game I've played in a long, long while.

Think its because I prefer 1st person with Skyrim/fallout

But with the new Dragon Age it controls significantly better than in The Witcher

The combat in Skyrim or any Elder Scrolls game is atrocious. Magic is OK, but melee combat is amongst the clunkiest I've seen in any game. The last dragon age had equally awful melee combat.

It's definitely better than Skyrim was, but it's also four years newer. Easy to forget that at the time, Skyrim revolutionised the vast, open world RPG and showed that it can be popular enough for AAA titles to use. If Skyrim wasn't so popular I'd be surprised if TW3 was anything like the game it is now.

I can't say yet whether I find it better than DA:I, seeing as I thought DA:I got truly great after around 35-40 hours, whereas I've found this great from the very beginning and I'm around 15 hours in, whether it keeps me enthralled for the 80 hours DA:I did is another story entirely. I think it will though, and thus it'll be better.

Yeah I have played more than 10 hours of this and I still really hate the movement and combat

Maybe it will just click?

Also coming straight from bloodborne which controls so well might not have helped

I'm a huge fan of The Elder Scrolls games, but I honestly think The Witcher 3 is superior in almost every sense. More creature types, bigger cities, better minigames, better combat, sea exploration, better ecosystem/weather trends, better main quest/side quests, better loot when exploring caves and dungeons and more diverse weapons and gear. That's no major dig to The Elder Scrolls either, this game is just on another level IMO.

Yep. I'm a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls games but the only things I think Skyrim does better than TW3 is the character customisation and the music.

I actually think the Elder Scrolls games have lost a lot of depth since Morrowind. I'd kill for a remake of that game

It'll certainly be interesting to see how Bethesda follow up anyway. Such a raising of the bar can only be a good thing. I think they'll be tempted to make some sweeping changes. I've no interest in the mmo though, hopefully work on fallout 4 is well underway.

I don't like it either but I've played mostly FPS recently so I figure I'm not used to it. Hoping for it to seem more natural in the coming hours.

Yep, in addition to being a fantastic game, TW3 really has raised the bar for Bethesda and BioWare for the open world genre (though I don't really have much faith in BioWare these days).

Having said that I can't wait for CDPR to develop Cyberpunk 2077 - imagine TW3 in a Cyberpunk/Sci-fi setting

I started a side quest last night and thought I'd just do a quick one before bed. Ended up spending over an hour on it. Great fun.

So I just had this bug happen to me
http://forums.cdprojektred.com/thre...ding-screen-at-the-end-of-King-s-Gambit-quest

It's just a side quest, but after reading up a bit, apparently it's a side quest which has an effect later on in the game, so I don't really want to play ahead without completing it. At the same time, nobody seems to be sure how it'll be before a patch comes out. Decisions decisions...

Edit: After reading a bit more, the PC patch for this is apparently out by Wednesday at the latest and on consoles soon after that. So I'll probably just wait it out.

Playing on Death March, it's pretty easy tbh, probably due to my time with Bloodborne & Dark Souls II. Still challenging when facing packs, not as tough as I imagined (although Werewolves constantly regaining health is a pain).

Going for an all Sign build, gotta say, I'll miss that fast attack whirl. Even if it was super OP.

Are you on your second playthrough?

I found Death March insane to start with when I was just getting the hang of things. Now I'm further in it's still challenging in places but doesn't feel impossible now. Plus it'll seem easier on second play through due to knowing the enemies weaknesses and the best way to face them.

I don't care about the quests any more. I just want more Gwent!

One bit of music on this game keeps reminding me of To Zanarkand from FFX.
