Television The Wire

It wasn't cancelled though.

5 seasons was always the plan, it was nearly cancelled after seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4 but HBO kept it going because it was so damned good.

The only thing remotely close to cancelling was that HBO cut season 5 from 13 episodes to 10 episodes.

As with other Simon involved series, The Wire became a hit in Europe after being cancelled in the US and then became more well known in its country of origin. He has spoken about this quite a lot.
The show ends perfectly imo.

About the show being cancelled.. David Simon didn't want to do a sixth series, he had a theme that it could be about the Latino population in Baltimore but felt that the staff didn't have the knowledge of Latinos to write it.

So if HBO did cancel it I don't think it made any difference.

just watching season 5 and Mgnulty is hilarious, could not stop laughing when watching the scene where Bunk brings in Freeman to talk sense into Mg nulty, and what happens next is absolutely hilarious.

Yes, I love that scene. That and when in the last episodes, he himself gets fed up with Freeman asking for more things all the time.

The Wire does have some hilarious bits amongst the grimness.

My two favourites are:
- The brothel bit is S2. "What? You were late!"
- Mc Nulty absolutely hammered and banging that bird against the car as the police are driving by, and then he holds up his police badge in S5.

Both those bits had me in tears laughing.

Both the Wire and the Sopranos were funnier than most 'comedies' as the dialogue was so well written. Landesman and Rawls got a lot of the best lines.

Agreed, it really speaks to the quality of their writing. You and those above you have mentioned some of funny men of the wire, and some from the sopranos I would say are Paulie Walnuts(of course), Tony B.(albeit only in Season 5), Chris, Ralphie,...even Tony when he isnt killing people or depressed. I love the line by Tony at the begining of season 6b when he is at the lakehouse with his wife and bobby and janice, when they are playing monopoly and janice wins $10 for getting second in a beauty pagaent to which Tony quips "She lost to a poodle or something like that

Just finished the last 4 seasons in 4 weeks, it's simply the best thing i've seen on screen. I feel kind of empty now that i've finished it.

I've been recording it on BBC2 on sky+.

Have got the first few episodes of series 3 lined up for my viewing pleasure. Next thing I know, my picture starts going wonky and when I phone Sky they said they might need to replace the box, losing all my recordings at the same time.

Livid...

Bummer.

Well worth buying the box sets though.

I may watch them all again one day.

So I've been watching the series 3 box-set. Thing is, I have to have it on quiet cause the nipper is asleep. So i decided to turn on subtitles.

Eureka! Suddenly I'm on top of every last detail of every sub-plot. Before this break-through I would regularly mishear/misunderstand muttered conversations and miss out all sorts of subtle, cool stuff. Strongly recommended to anyone who isn't fluent in Baltimorese.

Subtitles are really recommended. Especially for the first couple of episodes, until you get a hang of the slang.

Mate, I'm amazed how anyone without English as their first language can understand any of it!

Meh, it's not that bad.

After a while I understood most of it.

Had to start of with subtitles though!

You need subtitles to understand what Snoop is saying.

I bought all five seasons of it cheaply, and as soon as I finish Curb Your Enthusiasm I'll move onto this.

Looking forward to it going on the few episodes I've seen.

It took me until one of the very last episodes of the entire show to realize that Snoop wasn't a guy!

I picked up loads of things I missed out the first time when I watched Wire the second time. It is gonna be even better the third time.

Started this show for the 2nd time last night, off sick from work today and so far ive managed to watch 14 hours off it since

its impossible to turn off. Cant believe some the little things I missed 1st time round.

So true, anyone remember this brief conversation from the 'Pine Barrens' episode?

Tony Soprano: (On the phone to Paulie) This guy worked for the interior ministry he killed sixteen Chechen rebels

Paulie Walnuts: (After the phone call...to Chris) You’re not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator!.

Christopher: His house looked like shit.

I could not stop laughing! Just found it on youtube:

This scene is absolutely hilarious too:

Watching it again, it's probably my favourite scene in TV history!

Gotta love Clay too:

Good shout with Curb. Larry "fecking" David is God. Well some sort of bald comedy deity atleast.

The Wire is one hell of a programme, the best cop show I've ever seen on the box. End of.

"Bunk and a casefile." That had me chuckling.

HAvent seen hte last season yet but it is such an awesome show.

I love the way it makes out like crime doesnt pay in the long run... but then either does fighting the good fight really.

always gets you attached to like-able bad guys then kills them off because they are getting too like-able.

Easily the best show i've seen. Going to be so sad when i finally watch the last season.

Everyone I know has watched the series in record time because it is so damn good. I finished watching the whole series in probably 6 weeks or something like that.

I don't think it is that bad, but maybe I am deep in the streets so I understand it.

It took me 2 episodes and I was still not 100% sure.
