Television The Wire

This is the clip that when I first saw it I knew I loved The Wire and it would become one of my all time favorites.

Has anyone been watching any of The Corner? Also by David Simon, been of FX for the last couple of months, though I have them all saved I only watched the first one last night. Looks pretty good - much the same world being shown but more from the perspective of addiction and the addicted than the dealing. A few ex-Wire people in it as well - Lester and one or two others - plus one or two faces I recognised from Oz and elsewhere. Worth checking out for any big fans of The Wire I think, though it is too soon to say whether it is really brilliant or not.

I have seen it. It is very good and as you say, has a different perspective, more like Johnny Weeks and Bubbles troubles and Season 4 of The Wire's look at schools.

Just done with the two first seasons.

Brilliant show.

Excellent. I'll look it up.

Marching, Generation Kill is also by Simon. It's about the first 24 or so hrs in Iraq really good stuff, its worthy of a watch if you havent seen it

Ive got that but I havent watched it yet.

I just watched a couple more episodes of The Corner and I definitely like it. Thought it deserved another thread.

I saw, Generation Kill is excellent though, wish they would have been able to make more of it, but it def paints the picture well. House of Saddam although not by Simon was also excellent would be a great segway into generation Kill

Ever see the "prequels" HBO put on the web before the last season? I think there were three, here's one.

I saw Generation Kill and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth watching.

I found Stringer a more sympathetic character than Avon by the end of Season 3. Stringer wasn't just climbing the ladder, he was changing the way The Game was played throughout Baltimore. And within his own crew, he had almost completely done away with the violence that accompanies the drug trade, had turned it into something more like a business. No more shooting people over corners, which resulted in the innocent child getting shot when Bodie and his boys stirred some shit with a rival crew, something that happens far too often in American inner cities. Lessening this sort of violence benefitted the entire city, including people who weren't in the game.

In season 3, Avon is shown to be a child whose only games are posturing and violence, and doesn't want to put his toys down. People are always going to want to do drugs, so the drug trade will always be with us. Done Avon's way, the game is an endless war whose collateral helps to terrorize communities full of decent people. Done Stringer's way, it can be done without the killing of innocents or those in the game.

And the "family man" tag just doesn't hold up. Avon cared so much about his family that he got them involved in a life of violence and death. His "love" got D'Angelo a game in which he didn't belong, and his greed led to D'Angelo getting arrested, after Avon had sent him on the drug run to New York that left him hopelessly exposed. In season 3, he sends his female cousin to feck Marlowe and then set him up to be killed, which only gets her killed instead. When push came to shove, his "family first" credo was a complete sham, as was his sister's. One of the lines that best sticks with me is when McNulty is telling Brianna Barksdale about his theory of D'Angelo's murder, and she asks why he didn't come to her first. "Honestly? I was looking for somebody who cared about the kid. You were the one who made him take the years, right?"

The Wire > Sopranos > The Shield. Hands down, The Wire is the best piece of dramatic art I have ever seen. A 50-hour film with brilliant writing, intricate characters, and spot-on social commentary every season across a wide spectrum of American life.

Great post. Just finished it there. Im sad. I could watch it again straight away.

Good news......

BBC Two to show US TV's The Wire

British actor Dominic West leads the cast in the hit US drama
Hit US series The Wire is to be shown on BBC Two, it has been announced.

Led by British actor Dominic West, the critically acclaimed drama shows Baltimore life from drug users to politicians to local journalists.

Although it has been aired in the UK on satellite TV, it will be the first time it has ever aired on terrestrial TV.

All 60 episodes across the show's five seasons will be shown stripped across the week. Transmission dates have yet to be announced.

"We are delighted to offer terrestrial viewers the opportunity to watch this ground-breaking series," Sue Deeks, the BBC's head of series, programme acquisition, said.

"It's a wonderful chance for everyone to see what the critics have been raving about for so long."

Created by David Simon, The Wire's first season tells the story of a single drugs-and-murder police investigation from the point of view of both the police and their targets.

The show, which previously aired in the UK on pay-TV channel FX, has been championed by TV critic Charlie Brooker, who told viewers of his BBC Four show Screenwipe: "Quite simply, it's a stunning piece of work."

Author Irvine Welsh called it "the best thing on TV. By far. Nothing's close to it".

The deal to broadcast the series comes after Channel 4 chief executive Andy Duncan argued the BBC should stop buying shows from overseas and put the cash into original productions instead.

A BBC spokesman said: "The Wire is one of the most acclaimed series in television history. It has not previously been shown on UK free television and in acquiring it the BBC did not compete against any other broadcasters."

Anyone know where I could stream season 5? Just finished season 4 and was great.

This man is a real hero.

The Wire is finally being shown on terrestrial tv in the UK

starts next week on BBC2, a new episode every day, they are showing all 5 series

It's brilliant. Stick with it after ep 1, which is much more formulaic cop-show style than most. I wasn't at all convinced, but now all I really want to do with my life is watch, or at least talk about, the Wire.
I'm one year late, but YES.

In the last month or so I discovered and watched the entire show, and it's absolutely incredible. Now that I'm finished I find my life is without direction and meaning.

I've watched 3 episodes of the first season and I'm hooked.

Cracking TV.

Bought myself the DVD collection on ebay for just $85 (a feckin steal) and now rewatching it. It's amazing going back and seeing all the characters progress from the very beginning (Bodie and Carver especially).

Just started watching the box sets of this the other week. I'm fecking addicted! I dont watch much TV but this is great. I've watched the first 3 seasons, cant wait to get onto 4.... How many seasons has there been?

5 seasons, and their ain't going to be anymore.

It was always planned to be a 5 season show, but HBO nearly canceled the 5th series because the ratings were so low. How tragic that would've been.

just finished the second series, felt sorry for Frank Sobotka - A guy like him didnt deserve to die, you could see that all he wanted to do was serve his Union and family...

any plans for a 6th season?

Mgnulty was the star, the rest of the chraracters rocked, realy like Omar and Stringer bell, Felt Prop Joe and Barksdale looked too weak for gangster types, Stanfield really looked the gangster part.

Nope. Series is over. At least it is since they're selling "complete series" boxsets on DVD now (which I own). Shame that they couldn't make more seasons. One of the best shows I've ever seen, period.

this is the only series that i would definately look forward to season after season.

why did they finish it of?

bad viewing number? ratings ?

Bad ratings were a part of it. I think they pretty much knew season 5 was going to be the last so they wrapped it up pretty nicely, so even if they wanted to bring it back it would be pretty awkward considering the way they ended it (which by the way, is the absolute perfect ending for this show in my opinion).

what's mc nulty upto now, him and Bunk are funny as F****, the copier and fries tricks were hilarious. (ep1 S 05)

As with other Simon involved series, The Wire became a hit in Europe after being cancelled in the US and then became more well known in its country of origin. He has spoken about this quite a lot.
The show ends perfectly imo.
