Television The Wire

Idris Elba not Elber, apparently women on the office think he is a decent looking man; Was shocked the first time I heard him speaking with his accent, he does the Baltimore hood thing quite well

That said she was a great character as well. The show was loaded with them. Love the scene when Michael killed her, possibly the best in the entire show.

some of the best scenes are for me the meeting between Avon and Marlo, Marlo offing Prop Joe, Michael capping Snoop and Rawls/Daniels face to face with Mc Nulty in the last season when they confront him with all the shit he's done

Oh I agree love when Avon makes Marlowe give his sis 100 grand just to talk to the Russian whilst in jail, talk about turning a situiation around

I think you could see the respect Avon had for Marlo and all (not sure if it's the same the other way around) or who knows he was being a hypocrite

Both got what they wanted, the thing was Avon was in there for 5-7 y once he got back out he was always gonna take over shit again, reckon Slim C was his man anyway and would be loyal and hand it over regardless. Malow was a bit of a twat, that said he knew how to get his way

I remember watching the season 3 finale and loving it because I thought they were gonna get Marlow, all Slim needed was the word. No surprise he killed Method who in retrospect was one of the most devious of all of them

A scene I found very strong was when Michael was on the run (hehe reminds of something else) he had to set his little brother at his aunt's.The little kid crying when his brother was about to go was powerful

That one nearly made me cry.

Speaking of Cheese, the scene where Brother Mouzone quietly introduces himself to Cheese is one of my favorite in the whole series for sheer bad-assery.

I had to bump this to say this is the best, most realistic, series ever on TV. I'm a big fan of the Sopranos, a classic in it's own right, but this shades it. Brilliant show, brilliant.

Omar has to be the greatest homosexual character of all time, talk about shattering stereotypes.

Sheeeeeeit...

I can't believe there is no more Wire. I watched all of the seasons in quick succession so it was like a junkies paradise. Now there is nothing and I need the fix..

I thought it fitting to bump this thread so I could let you all know that The Wire makes me want to feck celluloid.

Just finished season 5. It's the weakest of the lot but still miles better than just about anything ever made. I wish I could go back and watch the whole series for the first time again.

I did find it a bit implausible that they would go to the trouble of making up a serial killer and risk jail time and the obvious heat all the media attention would bring in order to lock up a gangster they didn't have much on any way. I also found it difficult to give a feck about any of the journalist characters, except for wanting to punch the fella who faked the phone call. Not the strongest season but the last 3 episodes are vintage Wire.

And season 4 is the absolute benchmark for TV drama. I watched it in 2 days and happily gave up all other obligations to do so. I have never been so completely absorbed in any TV show, not even the best seasons of The Sopranos.

I'm about to start watching this tonight. Season 1 Episode 1...here we go...

One of the downsides of The Wire is that for months after, you find yourself speaking like a complete twat.

 I bet you always speak like a twat

whenever I watch the sopranos I notice that the word motherfecker is quite common in my vocabulary

Hmm, trying to think of some others...

Dumbledore from Harry Potter, Baron Harkonnen from the Dune books, those cowboys from Brokeback mountain, erm....the purple Tellytubby and everyone in Top Gun.

Not many gay fictional characters if you think about it.

Never read or watched Harry Potter but I believe Dumbledore being a bender is actually quite a hot topic of debate on the intarw3b?

Didn't JK Rowling actually go so far as to admit that he was?

If you read the books then Sherlock Holmes is quite blatantly gay, too.

Nonsense, I have read all the Doyle collections, which is what counts, if he was depicted as gay by a wannabe writer, fair enough. He disdained relationships.

As for JK Rowlings, fair enough, but why say it? I feel she was pandering to the gay community by saying that, there are no and I mean no references to his sexuality, neither is it inferred. If he was truly gay, why not write it in?

Dumbledore being gay is a joke really... His sexual preference was never explored in the series at all. JK Rowling can say what she wants about her characters but it doesn't really mean much if it wasn't written down in the books.

Adex's barely contained outrage when people and characters he likes are accused of being gay leads me to infer that he is, in fact, a raging cock-crazed bender at war with himself.

I like Omar and I feel Heath Ledger's performance in Brokeback Mountain was very good. But why does the gay community feel it's cool to label people and characters as gay when it is clear as day that they were not? It is desperation I feel. There are enough politicians and public figures that are gay, they can use those to promote alternative lifestyles as normal and not worthy of discrimination, and I agree. But calling Dumbledore and Sherlock Holmes gay when in the books it was never indicated, or calling Malcolm X gay years after his death is desperate. Sorry if I came across as outrageous :D

If you guys like "The Wire", check out "The Corner" which was a 6 part mini-series which tells the stories of the drug users. It's based around the same streets and has that gritty feel about it. It was made before "The Wire" but still has a lot of the same style and authentic voice to it.

Rowling wrote Dumbledore as gay. If you have read the books the only relationship he had was with another wizard who turned bad. If you missed this then fair enough but it's in there. They were not sucking each others cocks or dancing around to showtunes but it is in there. It's not a huge part of the story as it's really not a big issue.

I have no idea about Malcolm X but what difference would it make if he was gay? Would anything he said have meant less just because he preffered guys to girls?

Finished the abridged audiobook of Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets that David Simon wrote back in the 80s and it was quite good. A lot of things from The Wire show up in this book, and you can definitely see the same stories and even the same characters as well. It's pretty much in the style of Season 1 so I'd definitely recommend it.

You start over... you notice more details...

I will be returning to this mother of all shows every now and again for the rest of my life... because it's just that damn good <3

I agree with Snoop getting offed being one of the best scenes... it's one of the coolest things about the Wire... the way you see people carry the fact that they're about to get got. Prop Joe, String, Snoop... they all knew it's a fecking chess game and that they were in check mate... "well, get on with it moth-"

fecking ace.

Just reserved the book off my school library, looking forward to the read
