Television The Wire

Nah, it's alright when the white guys talk.

:wenger: A slightly racist comment there I think. There's nothing wrong with how anyone in The Wire speaks, it's all perfect and part of what makes the show so amazing because it's so realistic. The street slang is so damn spot on too, and incredibly eloquent at times. I especially love how the actual police pronounce it "Po-Lease" That always amuses me, especially when coming from The Bunk.

@Brwned I kind of agree with most of what you said there about Season 5. I've literally just watched all 5 series again in 2 weeks, and watched all of S5 in one go last night. Being only 10 episodes, it wasn't too much trouble watching it all in one go. I disagree about the theme track, as personally I think it's the best version aside from Season 1, but each to their own and all that, especially with regards to music.

As for the actual season, I find it is the weakest of the 5 for sure. I still like it as there is a lot of good in there, but a lot of shit too, and it also leaves a fair bit unfinished or it rushes some stuff. BUT! It's still a great series, just the weakest season of the 5.

I didn't like Joe going, but accept he had to. I hated how Omar went, but again think he had too, and the same with Brodie, I hated how he went too, but accept it's all in the game and he had to get got yo. I liked Carver getting his promotion, and Daniels getting fecked over fit the story quite well really. The Clay Davis angle was one great storyline in S5, especially how he wriggled out of it all and the Feds fecking over the Police out of spite with not taking "the headshot" was also a great twist.

Kima turning rat didn't sit right, especially after everything McNulty and Freamon did for her. The newspaper stories all feel a little rushed and incomplete and also a bit of a stretch at times. It also did seem slightly contrived especially compared to how well the previous seasons were written.

One minor grumble was in the final montage at the end where McNulty was looking over Baltimore and everything was being tied up, there was no showing of Avon at all. You saw Chris and Wee-Bey in prison, but not Avon, or "The Russian" and I just felt that was a little strange and stupid especially considering how important both were to the story. I know both were featured earlier in S5 when Marlo went to visit them, but still, it annoyed me a little at the end.

As for the rest of the show, I can't fault seasons 1-4. On the second watch I got to appreciate them more and especially season 2 that I wasn't overly keen on the first time I watched it. Now I think it's joint favourite alongside the amazing first season, with season 3 and 4 just slightly behind, again with so much to love in them so they are hard to separate. All in all it's an amazing show, and I already want to watch it again, but I'm half way through The Sopranos and think I will give it another year or so before watching The Wire again. One thing's for sure is that I still think it's definitely the best and easily my favourite TV show of all time.

I actually still haven't seen all of S5 (originally due to availability issues), but I did see the last episode. The final montage is fantastic, superlative, too good, etc.

A slightly racist comment there I think.

Oh, yeah, racist comment, right.

Where did I say there was anything "wrong" with how black people in The Wire speak? We were talking about the need for subtitles, not the inherent quality of the language of black people in The Wire. Most people on here are white (could be wrong of course, but that's my guess) and not American, I suppose, which is what I base my comment on.

For someone who has English as a third language, the subtitles are definitely most needed when the black characters talk. That's all.

I absolutely detested S2. The rest was brilliant
Season 4 was the peak but detested?

I binged The Wire for the first time earlier in the year, and instantly saw what the fuss was about. Kind of felt bad that I'd ignored my Aunt's recommendation for so many years, but in the end, it was definitely worth it.

Week before last, I made it through season 1 in under 3 days... But now I know the docks is coming, and I'm not sure I'm interested enough to watch it :( Not touched the boxset since.

I liked season 2 a lot first time and more each time I've watched it.
4231.

Season 2 is great, you melons. Frank Sobotka is one of the best characters in the show.

Anyone who doesn't like Season 2 doesn't actually get the Wire.

Snooty though it may sound, I have to agree.

That said, the 2nd season was disappointing first time around (except the last few episodes), but upon second viewing it was great, for me.

I guess when you got used to the streets in season 1, the docks are an unwelcome change in season 2 but upon the 2nd viewing I thought season 2 was as good as any season. Still the same quality in terms of writing, depth and acting.

The scene incidentally where I think Dominic West doesn't do a great job carrying McNulty's character, comes across really labored, always strikes me that his Engnlish accent is most noticeable in his scene too

I don't know, it seems consistent to me. McNulty's big on himself in situations where he's comfortable, but we've seen him shrink outside his wheelhouse before. At a fancy dinner, trying to actually connect with someone outside of his social circle, he gets stilted and awkward. He's not exactly the dude who's used to briefing the higher ups from behind a podium.

It's hard not to get shocked by the docks storyline after you've spent all your time in the 'ghetto' and with the police before that, which obviously meant that some people rejected/ didn't enjoy it. I don't think there's anything wrong with that reaction at first, but if you didn't like it while enjoying the rest of the show it really does deserve a second viewing. It's a tragic story beautifully told, and says so much about the loss of opportunity in industrial America. Frank's one of the best characters in the whole show too.

I think the worst opinion I've heard about The Wire is someone saying they loved it except Season Four because they "hated the kids". Feck you!

Pretty much; I can understand on first viewing people not liking the change, but once you realise that the show is much more than we see in season one and has an ever widening scope then there's nothing to dislike.

Just watched the first series of this and was impressed. About 3 into the next now and it feels a little strange being away from the projects and at the dockyard. I'll stick with it.

There are still scenes involving the Barksdale group, they're just not the main characters in season 2.

Huh? Enjoyment doesn't automatically follow on from understanding. You can get something and find it boring too.

Just finished watching it with some mates and sweet mother of god it is the best tv i have ever seen in my life

I've finally managed to convince myself I can be strong enough to not watch more than an episode a day and started the 2nd watch. Let's hope I can stick to it :nervous:

Cannot afford a situation like last time where all I did for a month was go to work - return to watch wire - sleep. Rinse and repeat.

Rewatched upto Season 4.

Shieeeeeet, S2 is SOOOOOO much better on a repeat viewing. I guess a lot of it is down to knowing that it's actually coming instead of expecting season 1 v2.0.

forgot about this.. I finished it a month ago. My favourite TV series of all time I think for sheer consistency. I enjoyed every season apart from season 2 which in retrospect wasn't that bad a season.. just less action packed or project centered. Agreed with Mockney though that in many ways it highlights the Wire at its intellectual best.. that said I think seasons 1 and 3, combine intelligence with sheer fun factor. How batshit crazy was the fake homeless killer storyline haha.. McNulty is a downright fecking legend. Season 5, like Brwned said is probably the weakest in terms of quality, but it is very entertaining.

Still struggling to force myself to get through the Soprano's though.. just does not have anywhere near the same must watch factor for me.

My favourite show bar none, watched it in full about 6 times which is slightly overkill I'd probably agree.
I am also a huge GOT and TWD fan and I did really enjoy Breaking Bad and to a lesser degree the Sopranos but The Wire does top my extensive list of favourite TV shows ever.

It's utterly peerless. Though Mad Men and Breaking Bad are genius too.

I need to get on Mad Men as I have heard plenty of positives about it from friends, I had the first two seasons brought for me on Blu Ray ages ago and it is still wrapped in cellophane!

Unwrap and enjoy!

The actor playing Monk (Marlo's associate) liked some pics on my Instagram. I think he actively looks for people who tagged The Wire in their pics and likes those pictures.
