Television The Wire

I'm glad people are coming round to my way of thinking on Marlo. Rap video gangster. Probably the main reason I rate S3 ahead of S4.

I did like his Stringer-esque ending though. But it's an ending that could've played out just as well with Avon, and I'd have given more of a shit.

Still, nit picking.

You can't lay claim to an idea just because you subscribe to it. Even if you are brilliant.

I invented that way of thinking moses. Everyone loved Marlo until I pointed out he's rubbish 3 weeks ago.

I thought the ruthlessness and lack of empathy made Marlo interesting. He was like the final product, clever and fierce.

Same here, I loved Marlo, all the negatives I see in here were generally things I thought were great about him. He has cat eyes though, which was odd.

Marlo was supposed to represent a cold and ruthless gangster, the kind of drug lord that would rise to the top of the game in double quick time through his brutal practices. I think that candid emotional scenes with his Golden Retriever named 'lucky' would have detracted from his purpose in the narrative.

He represented whatever you wanted him to represent. In a show full of 3 dimensional characters, he was distinctly 1D, and didn't carry it well. He was a Schwarzenegger character in a Coppola film for me.

Tbf, it could well have just been the actor I didn't like. But I just felt incredibly indifferent whenever he was on screen. Snoop was ruthless and not depicted with a labrador, but I still found her a good character.

Anyway, he had his cocking pigeons.

Yeah Snoop was likable. I didn't really think that Chris was though, he didn't have much about him either. Regarding Marlo, I found it a little bit refreshing to see a ruthless psychopath portrayed as such, he didn't have a conscience or any motivation other than making money through whatever means necessary, I don't think that these kinds of people are particularly complex or likable.

Perceptive, and likely true.
The fact is that The Wire didn't blindly follow convention, would fit with the less "Hollywood" approach to portraying a psychopath.
They are more usually unassuming, compassionless souls, rather than "Nicholas Cage" crazies.

I downloaded all 5 seasons again recently. Think I'll have another blast through arguably the greatest piece of television ever

Because that's really an issue? It's one of the greatest shows ever made.

I find it quite annoying tbh. The "GOAT" bit you mentioned is really down to personal preference. I personally thought Prison Break was amazing but air that opinion on here and you'll get lynched because you dont fit in with the "Sopranos/Wire/Breaking Bad are the greatest shows ever" opinion.

It's not because it doesn't fit in, it's because Prison Break was shit.

I think we'll need to know the aspect ratio of Prison Break before we can make any such bold conclusions.

Damn, that is good. Maybe I misjudged it first time round.

Does anyone know if it's in dolby surround 7.1?

Ok just discovered after downloading it (and goolging) that the show is only available in 4:3, I'm apprehensive whether to watch it now...

Who cares if it's not the "right" aspect ratio? If that's enough to put you off watching one of the greatest shows of all time then you're frankly an idiot.

Edit: Actually, what if I tell you there's no giant TVs, no fancy smart phones and no cool laptops in the show? In fact, there's virtually no technology at all. Now you're never going to watch it, are you?

Instead of downloading the show why not just watch it off 1 of the many websites that host the episodes online?

That way you can watch it full screen and not have it clogging your computer up.

If you want a link pm me.

Supposedly HBO wanted them to move it from 4:3 to 16:9 for season 3 onwards but David Simon refused, because he didn't want to change much about the show.

I feel this was a mistake and is the reason this show isn't as good as Prison Break.

Or, you know, you could buy it.

Well... apart from the wiretap of course, that one little bit of technology the show was named after.

Just plug an HDD into your PS3 and use the 'full screen' setting on the PS3 to 'stretch' it. 'Problem' solved.

And the typewriter. Never understood why McNulty wrote reports in a typewriter.

McNutty has technophobe written all over him. He would shit his pants if he had to use Word. And it would open him up to all sorts of ancillary risks. Colvin would start asking him to fill out expenses forms on Excel and all sorts of shit. That is a Pandora's Box he is best avoiding at all costs.
