Television The Wire

I'm now upto Episode 8 of series 5 and its been the best since season 1 imo.

can't believe there's only 10 episodes of season 5 :( just 3 more till its over

i just hope
Omar gets his revenge in a big fecking way, i'm assuming its between death and jail for Marlo and i'm praying its the former at Omars hands

awesome show

Oh, indeed.

But I thought season 3 and 4 were better. season 5 started to get a little more cheesier/far-fetched.. But the whole newspaper/reporting angle was good.

thing is i think McNulty is the shows best character (along with Omar) and there just wasn't enough of him in 2, 3 and the early part of 4 for me, they were still good shows but not as good as 1 and 5 imo - they were very slow at times

now McNultys back to his drunken, womanising, feck-the-rules best its flying along

i'll be gutted when i finish it tonight :(

need some new TV - is the sheild worth a watch?

Really? You're on your own there I think. Mc Nulty is in theory the shows main character, the fore front for it, but he's just a catalyst to start it off, he's probably the most stereotypical character of the lot - alco Irish-American cop who'll stop at nothing to catch the bad guy! I think there are far stronger characters than him in it.

5 is probably the weakest season of the lot in most folks eyes. 4 is just TV perfection, and he's barely in it because he had some personal stuff going on that the time I think.

Mc Nulty was the main character in the first which is where i warmed to him i suppose but his involvement in the subsequent series reduced and i think the show suffered a bit because of it.

perhaps 'best' character is the wrong way to put it as there are far more interesting people within the show but i think as the lead he was a good anchor for the show to build from. The middle series lost their way a little by never really being tied to one person imo

i'm not sure i'm articulating this very well.....

Take the sopranos for instance, Tony is the main character and even though he's not involved in every story thread in the show, the world they've created revolved around him and his presence and influence was always there in the background. My one crticism of the wire was its never really had one focal character that tied everything together, the star of the show is the city of baltimore itself i guess, but as the lead in series 1 McNulty is perhaps the closest they got to a lead character otherwise

stringer would've been another were it not for his premature demise

still, its an awesome show, second only to the sopranos as far as modern tv drama series go. i'm excited to see the end but also gutted its almost over

Fair enough if you feel that way, but for me the show's greatness is based on its scope, and the whole thing that ties it together is that it's having a go at any inner-city in the US, where problems like drugs, poor education, gangs, crooked politics and futile policing strategies are rife... It's a love-letter to Baltimore as well as a critique of where the US as a whole is headed.

As for
This is it... Click again and I might spoil a death for you in the series.
Stringer's
"premature" demise, this is how it's explained on Wiki

The show's creators are also willing to kill off major characters, so that viewers cannot assume that a given character will survive simply because of a starring role or popularity among fans. In response to a question on why a certain character had to die, David Simon said,
We are not selling hope, or audience gratification, or cheap victories with this show. The Wire is making an argument about what institutions—bureaucracies, criminal enterprises, the cultures of addiction, raw capitalism even—do to individuals. It is not designed purely as an entertainment. It is, I'm afraid, a somewhat angry show.

I love that it doesn't necessarily pursue the sexiest story arc that it can put on the telly... even if some will claim that the fifth season didn't sit right with them in terms of plausibility.

I agree with Eriku, part of what made The Wire so fantastic was that it showed life in Baltimore from pretty much every viewpoint. It wasn't a show about Baltimore cops where you occasionally saw the drug dealers, or a show about dealers where you occasionally saw cops, it was a total capture of the city, from the perspective of cops, dealers, druggies, politicians, ordinary citizens, everywhere.

Also, re the killing of the person mentioned, as well as others, I liked the way they weren't afraid to kill people, as it only went further to showing the gritty reality of that life. For want of a slightly less cheesy way to convey it, the people may change but the game stays the same.

The only problem I had with this show (and a rather important one) was that it was so fecking good and with such a real, opened and unpredictable plot that everything else I try to see pales in comparison.

No other show can bring me this level of satisfaction, stuff like Dexter or Prison Break seem so repetitive to me now (always so close to getting caught yet always some coincidence or unlikely combination of events to save their ass). Sure, other shows can be entertaining, but none gave me the wow factor I felt nearly every episode of The Wire. It raised the standards a show has to have for me to fully enjoy it.

I still have Seinfeld left, thank God, I don't get tired of those ever. And I suppose the Sopranos, I only saw two series of it and am looking forward to slowly watching the rest.

All of these are well worth downloading if you havent seen them.....easily better than Dexter and Prison Break, although still a step down from The Wire.

Band of Brothers
Generation Kill
Oz

Dexter is infinitely better than Prison Break tbf. Prison Break was basically shit after half way through season 2 at the latest.

i couldn't get into Dexter, far to OTT for me

will need something to fill my evenings though once The Wire is done.

The Sheild any good?

Band of Brothers was brilliant, I have to see Pacific soon. Never heard of Generation Kill, will look into it, thank you.

The Shield is excellent in its own right. The Wire it aint but thats not exactly a fault. It has the feel of a tv series more than Wire and delivers its storylines alot faster aswell. Some quality season long cameos in it aswell in the latter seasons.

Forgot to mention the West Wing although some cant get into it...poor souls

The Shield is ok. Again, if you saw the Wire first, every other "cop" type of show pales in comparison. I believe it's from the same makers of Sons of Anarchy, so it is OTT and very fast-paced

If you want more Simon, watch other Simon series, nothing is quite like them, comparing the Wire with other cop dramas is stupid as the Wire isn't a cop drama really.

Homicide, The Corner, Generation Kill and Treme, although I feel he misses Burns in Treme as it can be a chore at times. Simon, like any other made for tv brain like Joss Whedon or Bryan Fuller, is in his own universe.

Exactly. The show was real and based on real life stories and they did a good job of making it feel real. Anyone can go at any moment.

I think they tried to establish that with Kima in season 1. Nobody is safe.

Season 5 spoiler:
Also the way Omar dies just out of the blue only reinforces this.

Yeah Omar getting capped by a 3rd grader was ace

Well done, so you havent ever seen an episode. Watch a good three-four eps at your first sitting to start the addiction

all done. I'm not gutted at all either, feels good actually like finishing an epic novel

needless to say....

i was like NOOOOOOOOO!!!! when Omar got capped but it was a good way for him to go i suppose, completely unexpected and yet perfectly apt for the show as a whole - what i wouldn't have given to see him get his hands on Marlo though. oh well

On reflection i wouldn't say series 5 was better than the others but i really enjoyed it during. Someone said earlier in the thread that The Wire didnt really do climaxs, the seasons just ended when they ended they didnt need closure or cliff hangers so i think what i felt watching season 5 was the huge anticipation of an ending that was 60 shows in the making, it was exciting.

It is slow at times but never boring - it really gets under your skin. By the end you feel you know the city and the characters personally.

its wonderfully written, wonderfully acted and wonderfully shot. Just a brilliant, brilliant show that all should see

CLK_FPC - you're in for a treat dude

Buying them, starting series 1 tonight

:(

I beg to differ mate, he's a pain in my eyes almost every scene he's in.

For me there are more influential and charismatic character (i've watched till S3though)

Stringer Bell, Bunk Moreland and the hissy psycho Omar!

Mc Nulty for me is too... indecisive, he looks hard and tough but he never actually imposes them, looks like an Irish sissy if you ask me. The way his CO treats him, I bet any sober Irish would have given him one, not to mention the always drunk McNulty.

I agree.

ANd if i may add, that is the thing that keeps us going, wanting more and more.

The thing with series like McGuyver, Ghost Whisperer, and the others are that there are no continuation in the story line, time freezes, 40 episode later McGuyver's still mcguyver. Even his army knife doesn't get rusty.

The wire is simply a season long movie that really develops the character and explore the intricated stories web over the season.

This is the only series wehre i don't hit the FF button, and ussually i watch movies in 2x speed.

so i take it theres not much love for McNulty then!

i dont care, i kinda relate to him myself, we're somewhat alike....

we're pretty good with the ladies though ;)

Never heard of anyone who did that. You must be a very impatient man.

Only in the movies, like the DA says : there's nothing more useless than a drunken Irish who can't feck :P

well.. i've said "so far" so i have the escape clause

Yeah, due to piracy some movies are not worth my time, I can skip pass a b-class movie no problem. I guess to much FM trains my eyes to read text in 2x speed faster than a normal human being :P

Just 1 episode left to watch now. Absolutely love this show it's class. Got to say I've enjoyed 5th season a lot more than I expected to, given what I'd heard about it. Gutted there's no more after this episode, guess I'll just have to start from season 1 again!

The second viewing is also brilliant, as you might notice things you didn't before...shieet I rewatched the show for the first time in a year last month and picked up lots of new things, altered my views on some of the characters etc. And it was my fourth or fifth viewing!

Its amazing. I started watching season 1 start of November and was finished all 5 seasons within the month. I really wish I had savoured them more.

Started watching the show two weeks ago - up to season 4 now. It's brilliant.
