Television The Wire

the wife and i watched it, one dvd after another, over a month's time and it's the best ever for me. loved the sopranos though. the shield was another good series.

I have rewatched Oz, I have rewatched The Sopranos, I have rewatched The Shield.

I have never rewatched The Wire.

I think that might be a big mistake. A mistake I should rectify in the near future.

I'm about half way through season 3 of this. It's very, very good but I still think Sopranos is better.

I re-watched this recently. Even better the second time through.

Its all in the game yo.........

Ding-ding diddly-dang - aint no thang maaan....

never watched the Wire, always heard great things about it but just never got round to watching it online or buying the DVD

Have watched Oz and the Sopranos though, sensational shows there, Oz in particular makes Prison Break series 1 look like a Hannah Montana Movie and the Sopranos just rules by default

Also heard great things about True Blood, no doubt I'll get round to watching that eventually

I'm doing an assignment on The Wire at the moment and have looked everywhere for its ratings in its original run on HBO but have found nothing, so any help would be appreciated.

Also does anyone have any decent articles on the institutes the show portray, such as the police force and political system but mainly I'm interested in the school system.
This went quite well, got the highest in the course and the lecturer was very complimentary.

I'm sure I was helped by picking what she described as her favourite show.

About to start watching this from the very beginning, amazing I've gone this long without catching a single episode.

Watched Season 2 on a marathon over the last weekend. Looking forward to the rest. Absolutely loving this show. All the characters are bloody brilliant.

lemme know if you guys have any success... I'd like to experience a lot of things for the first time... again...

I'm just coming up to the end of season four of this, it really is a bloody brilliant show. I think season 1 is my favourite but I plan on watching them again at some point so that may change after a second viewing I guess, really enjoying four as well though.

Just finished 4 and started 5, still going strong.

S4 spoiler:
I was a bit gutted when Bodie got killed, I liked him.

Just finished watching the last 4 seasons in a week and all I can say is that this has to be television at its fecking finest. I can not imagine a series that will ever top this. I'm honestly feeling withdrawal symptom already.
MIND=BLOWN.

Watch it again. This time with subtitles. Or if you've done that, watch it again with commentary. It's worth it.

This show really has ruined television for me. Whenever I watch any of the other highly rated dramas, my enjoyment of them is severely compromised by that irritating part of my cognition that insists on noting how flat they are compared to The Wire.

Take the West Wing for example, I've gone through the first five seasons in the last few months and it's a fine show without a doubt, but feck me it really doesn't hold a candle to The Wire does it?

And to be fair, other than some of the better bits of The Sopranos, nothing really does.

Try Breaking Bad. Not saying it is as good as The Wire. But the first season is very weel knit and written.

The Sopranos is better for me although not massively and I'll always rate The West Wing above anything as it's the first show I really got heavily in to, I've watched it through countless times and love it.

Oh dear, let's not start this debate again! :)

To me it's the thing that there's no suspended silences with ominous chords over or any other such things to try to play on your emotions. For example
the scene where there's a shooting out on the corner and it goes through a house and hits a kid... the way the woman just snaps out of it and wants to get her kid ready for school, only to find that a stray bullet hit him was incredibly moving and sad
and all without tugging at your heart strings through emotive music or whatever... that sort of thing is what made the Wire resonnate so much more with me than any other series... That and it showed how the orders of magnitude change, but the game essentially stays the same. It's all connected and it's all a part of life.

Gorgeous, gorgeous show.

Wire fiends!

The Guardian has an excellent section devoted to the Wire.

The Wire re-up | Media | guardian.co.uk

It has articles covering every episode in the series, as well as a ton of discussion comments by viewers. Excellent analysis of the show, but nothing can do the series justice. The blog discussions are so good they were able to make a book that featured such comments. Note: This is for people who have watched the entire series, cause spoilers abound in every article. I remember being devastated after finding out
Stringer got killed halfway into the second season

For those of us who also love The Sopranos, there is an article that nitpicks the differences between the 2, and picks a winner. Of course, a lot of insightful comments between the 2.

The Wire re-up: season five, episode seven

It truly is a brilliant series, and I can't understand why it never got more recognition. It's spoilt TV for me also. I can't watch any series now without intensively looking for pitfalls in the plot, realism, or quality.
