Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

You forgot EUROPE.

Totally triumphant record.

Come on man, you Swedes can do soooo much better than those bands. :D
Dissection, Bathory, At The Gates, Entombed, Dismember, Eucharist, Dawn, Vinterland, Sacramentum, Marduk, Dark Funeral, etc etc, those are some legendary bands. And one of the finest modern metal bands in Cult of Luna as well.

Yeah, I know we've got a lot of bands... but those three are favourites of mine :)

Opeth, Katatonia and Candlemass too. Sweden really took the mantle from the English bands that started it all, once the yanks had messed around with it a bit.

And Therion. One of my favorite bands when I grew up. Founders of the symphonic metal. And not the poppy, generic stuff that's coming out these days.

But Opeth stands out by far in my opinion.

Saw Europe at Bloodstock. They were actually really good, but the crowd didn't give a shit about any of their songs that weren't Final Countdown.

As for Swedish bands, I'm a fan of anything including Nils Patrik Johansson, Falconer (vocalist of that band has a ridiculously "nice" voice for metal, I think he does theater stuff too), Grand Magus and Pain of Salvation. And obviously Sabaton and Opeth.

Candlemass played a gig in Sthlm a couple of years ago with their original singer Johan Längqvist. Was living in Canada then but considered flying home just for the gig. One of my concert regrets. I'm probably leaning towards Nightfall as my favourite Album but Johan is just perfect on the first Album

Been seriously considering getting a ticket to see Sabaton with Alestorm and Bloodbound next year when they come to the UK. Would have to go on my own though which is putting me off a tad, anyone here been to a gig on their tod and found it to not be weird/bad?

Where is it at? Reckon I may have to buy a ticket for that, Sabaton and Alestorm  Never heard of bloodbound mind.

There's about four or five places I think. Nearest me would be Manchester or Birmingham, think there's a date in Scotland, one in London, one in Southampton and one in Norwich, one in Wales and one in Bristol.

I've heard of Bloodbound but not heard any of their stuff really. Think they're supposed to be alright though, who knows?

Who really cares considering the other 2 bands? Fecks sake, none in Newcastle, so it's Manchester or Birmingham for me too -_-

Are Mastodon considered metal? Been a fan since I heard the Lifesblood ep back in 2001, Leviathan and Remission were awesome. Also their newest album is pretty damn good.

Also Isis - Oceanic and Panopticon are personal favorites.

Mastodon are great and belong in this thread.

Seen them a fair few times now and they get better and better, remember seeing them play with Slipknot and was blown away. Also when they supported Slayer at the Apollo but I don't rate Slayer much (sound on the night was pretty crap to be fair to them).

I've only seen them as a support act, Tool, Korn and Slipknot/Slayer. Always put in a gutsy performance.

Been thinking of going to this in Leeds: http://damnationfestival.co.uk/news
That line-up is the stuff of dreams for me personally. But it's a 7 hour drive (not even counting waiting times at the Euro Tunnel). Anyone know of good places to stay in Leeds?

I go to Uni in Leeds but don't live there anymore, I commute in from near Sheffield. I don't really know any good places to stay but there's got to be a Premier Inn/Travelodge or something nearby, they aren't too bad to stay in.

Love Mastodon. The Hunter is the only weak effort really, and even that has it's moments. Thought the new record was great, but Crack The Skye will always be number one though.

And Panopticon rules hard, agreed.

Not really metal but i thought i'd post it anyway - any fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor here?

That video is sick :D The awesomeness of the album though. Holy feck. I was blown away. Repentless, Take Control, Chasing Death and When The Stillness Comes are all fantastic imho. The rest are sweet as well, apart from maybe one or two. To me, of all the old timers, Slayer are one of the really few that never changed their awesomeness to something more shitty.

That being said. The last album from Five finger is fecking tremendous as well.

Didn't fancy Maidens last effort as much as I hoped for, but as a Motörheadbanger for life, I am really happy with "Bad Magic".

Modern Satyricon doesn't do much for me, sad to say. Those first 3 albums though. I just bought tickets for next year's Graspop with a nice selection of Norwegian black metal so far: Abbath, Arcturus, Borknagar and Satyricon. Fortunately for me, Satyricon will celebrate the 20th anniversary of possibly the greatest traditional black metal album of all time Nemesis Divina by playing it in its entirity. Mother North, Immortality Passion, the title track, there will be too many highlights. Hope they bring Nocturno Culto along for this one.

Now if they could just add Enslaved to the line-up that'd complete the Norwegian party. I completely missed their new release In Times earlier this year and now I can't stop listening to it. Surprisingly mellow at times but it only makes the harsher bits stand out. Plenty of catchy riffing which suits their progressive style of black metal very well.

Good man! RedTiger might be the cousin of the bass player but he's not sure so I posted Wizard in Black for him.

They come from down my way but I can't say I'm related to any of them. That's pretty cool. Also, if there's a better looking metal chick than Liz, I'd sure like to see her.

You're only the 2nd person I have met that has heard of them. Both have been internet meetings. I'm from south Wales and the general question is "Who?" Even from my seasoned metal friends, I find it quite shocking to be honest they are so unknown.

They are very obscure, it's true. It's the same with me. I know a couple of metal heads who i go to gigs with who don't know them either.

Always thought they were pretty well known, at least among the general metal audience. Saw them at decent sized festival - not even a dedicated metal fest even - this summer and plenty of people turned up. They closed the stage after the likes of Orange Goblin, Blues Pills and Solstafir, so that's saying something.

Of those i've only heard of Orange Goblin, i guess i'd expect them to headline something like that.

Tried out Bathory this week, kind of randomly. I'm not really into black metal but though their first few albums were pretty cool. Got to Hammerheart though and lost my shit, really do like that album. Especially 'One Rode To Asa Bay', think I'll enjoy some of their other 'Viking metal' stuff too when I get to it.

fecking epic

Last night i was in the middle of that vortex of awesomeness.

Cannibal Corpse first and Testament later to close the night... that put an end to my concert season of the year. It was quite epic.

Twilight of the Gods is an incredibly epic album as well. Even as a massive black metal fan I prefer these to the original satanic trio. Sure I like Under The Sign etc but early 90's Burzum and Darkthrone in particular took that formula and improved it. Hammerheart and Twilight though, they've got that abrasive, epic sound of Into Glory Ride-era Manowar but doomier and more passionate. Later viking metal bands would add too much folk influences or become too polished and lost that rough and epic edge. Bathory's peak if you ask me.

I've listened to Twilight of the Gods on repeat like all this week. So, so good. I love the fact that they give that epic kind of sound but don't have the folky stuff that came in with later bands. I mean, i do like that folky stuff too but this is way cool imo. Love it.
