The Trump Presidency - Part 2

This will lead to millions of LGBT people and non-white people losing their jobs or being refused employment by bigoted business owners won't it? How does this do anything but hurt the economy?
Because helping the economy was never the goal. The goal is to enrich themselves, and the mechanism to do so is to keep their voters in a continual frothing feeding frenzy. This is that.

People with disabilities will suffer too! You think Trump cares about the economy or anything for that matter? He only cares about Donald J. Trump

Bullshit, you didn't do that. You presented a picture of an Ostrich and attacked my character because of my username.

Stay classy.
I presented you with constant facts from the beginning highlighting why you were clearly and factually wrong.

I never attacked your character I just made a reference to your username which you have aptly chosen.

Correct. Analysing the party-programs regarding economy in Germany shows that one is being extremely (off the charts) friendly to the very rich. It‘s your friendly neighbor, the right wing extremist party AFD.

To me there is somethin ominous brewing and all this powerful people they don't lick Trump's arse because they want to profit as a main reason but because they are shit scared of something that will happen and they need to be on the winning side. They will benefit economically as a byproduct. But is not normal this public support from people that are much powerful economically than anyone in the world. They could be wishy washy, comply with a couple of things to be on government side and business than usual. To me it looks like people behind Trump, dangerous people, have a plan tat will shake the US and the world and they need all the social media on their side and they push them to get involved in it and if not you will be in real trouble. I know I am entering into conspiracy territory but I don't like it at all the way it looks
This doesn’t really look that unrealistic. I for certain think this will be a lot more sinister than his first 4 years. He’s driven by vengeance, hate and has nothing to lose, he wants his name stamped in history books and will stop at nothing.

In before the lock, full on Stasi shit here...

I’ve only just finished reading 1984 for the first ever time. Am trying to educate myself a little on classic literature I’ve not read. Was fecking bleak!
The above “grass on your mates” was literally spelled out in that book how it all works. It could have been written by the thought police.
But it’s happening now in front of our eyes……
What happens now, does everyone just sleepwalk into it? Orwell was pretty light on how it all got started.

Edit - Robinson Crusoe is much less depressing but am only 100 pages in!

Feels that way to me too.

My sister just told me he's stopped grant reviews. Good thing her research has funding for next few years but this is shit. This guy is a cnut.

Nope. The masses have always been open to manipulation based on idiotic biases. Recently that has been further weaponised.
People have always been open to manipulation, because people can, are and always will be influenced by a range of different things in life; from their own parents and peers, to religion, culture and national characteristics.

But if you think that large numbers of people feel they way they do about issues like immigration, for example, because of ‘idiotic biases’ which have been weaponised by propaganda then you’re living in cloud cuckoo land.

If industry has any pull then this will be fixed (with some "donations" I'm sure). They love them some government funded R&D. I would not be surprised though if there is a radical change on how the NIH funding is apportioned.

I'm hoping the whole thing will implode because of the fundamental incompatibility between Trump's vision for America as a completely closed shop and the complete reliance the tech bros business models have on globalism. At some point that's going to cause a LOT of friction.
I completely agree. Though for now, I think the early signs are that we’ll get a lot of noise from the Trump/MAGA/ Bannon ‘anti globalist, anti immigrant’ side (see the argument of birth citizenship vs. constitution), but the actual substantial policies that unite the right will be the deregulation and pro energy policies that support big tech and big finance.

You two should stop now. Usually the side stories that branch off from the main thread are mildly interesting or amusing but yours has been anything but.

Government is the largest funder of research, not just in the US, and shenaninigans will be a serious problem

Absolutely. I work for a big biotech and some of our sales reps, who cover academic accounts, are big Trumpers. Can't wait for them to rock up to comp committee with "I missed my number because my accounts lost their funding".

Fun fact - some of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was based on Robinson Crusoe.

Did Canada at any point ban Trump from building a hotel there or something? Trudeau hit on Melania? He's absolutely going overboard with them.

It’s all about shutting down federal programs that create red tape for employers so you’re not far wrong.

You genuinely think that’s the motivation?

Like, not just arguing from the hill you’ve chosen, but honestly? You think this is about bureaucracy?

Is it me, or this time around does he seem more dangerous and unhinged?

If he was the leader of any other nation we'd either be laughing, or the Western Govt would be plotting regime change.

I had that exact same conversation with someone earlier. Wondering the why. He really seems to have it out for Canada in particular. Then again he s always been "tougher" on allies bc...well ...he doesn't have the balls to actually stand up against others.

I've watched a few of his speeches since he's taken office, and when asked about the situation/genocide, he's not mentioned Gaza by name once...all the whilst the Zionist bastards are now starting a massive operation in the West Bank, and the Illegal Squatters are attacking the locals too.

He’s bitter and doesn’t have to worry about re-election. Dangerous combo.

Of course not. The motivation is obviously more sinister than that. But ultimately, it is the removal of bureaucracy. As I said in this post he can do a lot of shitty things by removing bureaucracy but that doesn’t change the nature of what’s happening.

All this is also showing again how dangerous the path has been on since the likes of Reagan and Cheney enhanced presidential powers and immunity which has been abused by every president since and with Trump has now reached king like status. I fail to see how at this point we are all that different from the times when i.e. the British royals controlled the judiciary, legislative and soon probably religious branches of society.

We have become what we fought against.

So, you agree, he’s not a small government libertarian.

Just because the Venn diagram of “shit Trump does in the name of being an evil cnut” and “things you could call libertarian” isn’t two separate circles doesn’t make him one.

Nah, he put one up in downtown Toronto but very few Canadians want anything to do with him so it went tits up pretty quickly.

As always with him the failures are someone else's fault.

The fact they are two linked circles is literally the only point I’ve been making all along. I also think you need to read my other post I linked if you care what I think about him and his policies. If not, no worries.

Perhaps it’s the way you’re explaining your position, but if I can try to summarise the fundamental difference as it comes across to me…

You seem to be suggesting he’s a “small government libertarian” (your posts say he’s inclined towards those policies which suggests that’s his motivation), and as a byproduct of this bad shit can result.

I (and I think most every else) sees it as he’s an evil cnut doing evil things because all he cares about is enriching himself and his mates, who in turn enrich him, and pleasing his angry mob. Then as a byproduct of that, some stuff may fit the libertarian narrative in some way.

The difference is what he’s aiming for and what is by accident. Labelling him the way you are insisting on doing is focusing on the wrong thing.
