The Trump Presidency - Part 2

I think we’ve seen Americans last ‘free and fair’ election for quite some time. These guys aren’t going anywhere unless they’re on the losing side of a war.

It might get worse, but so far is better. And worse than genocide is ....more genocide
Better? He just gave Israel permission to go full steam ahead making sure the West Bank is wall to wall Israelis ASAP? Please don't tell me you believe the ceasefire was primarily Trump's doing?

Trump just fired the guy (Hook) that was leading his State Department transition

Can that be fought in court?

It will be, and under any other presidency you would be sure that a potential constitutional amendment of such partisan nature would not go through, but under Trump - his policymakers who came prepared for the loopholes, his lap dog SC willing to overlook them, and his rabid but powerful supporters who will cheer and back his every move - you never know, it might as well go through.

Firing people on Social Media too.

What a classy piece of shit.
rian Hook was Trump's ultra-hawkish Iran envoy in his first term, and worked on the transition at the State Department in November. Seems he's now fallen out with Trump, who just fired him from the board of a Washington think-tank, saying Hook is "not aligned with our vision"

This is fever dream stuff.

What happened today was both incredible and bad...
I guess if we want to hold onto some optimism, there are already lawsuits against him. So it's not just being taken lying down. People are still willing to fight and it's only been hours after being sworn in the fight has begun.

So far in his first day in office.....

He's signed executive orders that ..

Remove the USA from the Paris Accord

Removed the USA from the WHO

Reversed Biden's executive order that lowered medicine prices for those on Medicare and Medicaid

Renames the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and Mount McKinley gets its name back.

Attempts to override the 14th amendment and revoke US birthright Citizenship (will go to appeal) via EO

Removes sanctions placed.on Israel and Israeli's

Revokes ban on sales of 2000lb bombs to Israel

Pardons all those convicted in the J6 riots

Stops US aid funding of UNWRA

Accuses Spain of being a BRICS nation and since then the Official Spanish White House Twitter page and the Spanish White House website have both been deleted. (Spain collectively doing a McNulty now saying 'What the feck did I do?'

Starts ordering and sending the Military to control the Southern Border

Revokes countless environmental protection orders signed in by Biden

Signs an EO ensuring drugs available to states that carry out the Death Penalty via lethal injection and wants the speed of all planned executions sped up

Signs executive order declaring there are only two genders, male and female

Signs an executive order once again preventing transgender from serving in the military.

In total Trump revokes 78 of Biden's Executive orders including on race, DEI, climate change, gender identity, COVID and more.

Announces tarrifs of 25% to be placed on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada starting February 1st

Removes National Security clearance from John Bolton

Signs an EO making it easier to fire Civil Servants from their government positions and reduces protection they receive from unions.

Plus goodness knows what else hasn't been reported yet or I haven't seen or heard about yet.

Also note how many of these were objectives of Project 25..... The same Project 25 that Trump said he had never heard of and wasn't part of.

But it’s all gravy because him coming to power coincided with a ceasefire in Palestine (that probably would have happened anyway and didn’t involve any sanctions on the country actually committing genocide) I don’t think I’ve ever seen single issue politics taken to such ludicrous extremes as some of the stuff I’ve read on here over the last week.

I can't even joke about this. I just feel sick.

The United States of America can no longer call itself a functioning democracy. The executive power owns the Supreme Court and the media. The checks and balances are eroding in real time.

It's going to be some bad years before it gets better.

This is what a lot of Americans voted for. Trump is giving them what they want. Isn't that how a democracy should function?

Spot on. fecking hell.

Guy who organized coup d'etat is again a president and has pardoned all those involved in that. Surreal isnt even the beginning of it.

This is the thing. The Supreme Court appointees were all legitimate from his last term, as well as all the lower court judges. Obviously with a huge helping hand from Mitch McConnell, but legitimate all the same.

Now he’s president with control over the House and Senate and on day 1, doing exactly what he promised voters he would do. They voted for him in their millions.

I would echo the worry about the future of democracy, as I can only imagine the Gerrymandering that will occur and obstacles placed in the way of opposition voting.

But right now, this is democracy at work. And as such, America deserves whatever it gets. The problem for the rest of us is, the impact will likely be world wide. And that is a problem, as we didn’t vote for this lunatic.

Yes, in a minimalistic view of democracy.

Modern democracies also have to guarantee civil liberties, observance of human rights and set up proper checks and balances. Trump and the Republicans have dismantled that bit by bit. And the monumental ineptitude of the Democratic Party has to be named here too.

European leaders have to get their act together quick. The sooner we realize that the US is more adversary than ally, the better. There is no functional difference between the US and China in that sense.

Why arnt the millions of non Trumpists that actually like democracy at the very least get the fk off X and all other platforms that are run by ze RW Nazis. And anything they sell like Teslas. If they get hold of TikTok its even more fkd. The least they can do is try to un platform them.

would appreciate you addressing me or the others making this claim when you posted this. especially given your cries for civility for musk, and after i defended you on the musk thing  prick.

anyway, you've hardly been posting about it in the thread, so i don't know how much you've read. but any reading from israeli media about this ceasefire, and any knowledge at all about what biden has been telling them in the year prior, will tell you why the bolded isn't true.
and as for "single issue politics" - it tends to become that when the issue is genocide.

The posts about Arab Americans on here . You just can’t help yourselves.

From a purely international perspective, the defunding of the WHO and leaving the Paris accords is very sad. A lot of very vulnerable people depend on the formers work in particular.

America does have checks and balances, but we’re seeing what happens when one side is willing to push those rules to breaking point and beyond to get with it wants, while the other side is just happy to be there.

My own feeling is that what few checks and balances remain, together with the incompetence and infighting of the far right, will limit the damage Trump will be able to do, but it will be a rough four years to be sure.

A big Democratic victory in the mid-terms would certainly help, and I have a feeling that the back half of Trump’s reign will see the Republicans preoccupied with their war of succession anyway.

But as bad as Trump and his friends are, they’re only doing what they said they’d do, and (mostly) what the constitution allows them to do. Most of my anger right now is directed at Biden and his Democrat enablers, who allowed this to happen.

As simplistic as it sounds, this is what the majority of those that bothered to get up of their asses to a polling station voted for, so this is what they will get... if it affects them directly then more fool them. I just feel bad for the ones that didn't vote for this.

I'm honestly not sure if I would call the abomination that is the American election system democratic at this point. Too many opportunities for voter suppression and the lack of regulation in many areas like media, campaign sponsoring, etc. pretty much makes it an oligarchy pretending to be a republic. I mean, you can hardly argue that voters can vote according to their free will when they're constantly brainwashed by a gigantic infotainment industry and can hardly tell facts from fiction. Any other country and the UN would send election observers.

Thanks for the updates using BlueSky! :)
deleted twitter a couple weeks back (was holding onto to for Australian fantasy football), but i'll only be posting BlueSky links now. Sucks that it seems like it will be hard to integrate into the forum for embedding, but I think we should just make it a habit now of using bluesky links and people just have to open them to read.

I agree. Hopefully Xenforo offers integration soon.

Are you joking? I guarantee you that over half of Americans believe they were better off 4 years ago. We are a dumb nation filled with dumb, bigoted, selfish people. I used to believe the majority of people were innately good. No longer. The majority of people are monsters.
That’s some flip flop.

The timing of the ceasefire is directly related to the incoming Trump presidency. You don’t have to have some special political insight to come to that conclusion.

Any idea when?
