The Trump Presidency - Part 2

Worrying how quick they're willing to go straight to the deep end

He's doing exactly what he said he was going to do before the election. In 2016 they didn't expect to win, weren't prepared for power and didn't understand how the system of government worked in practice. They floundered and failed. This time round, they've learned the lessons, they know where the system is going to try and block them, and they are prepared to smash through it. Mass round ups and deportations will start in the next week or two.

I'm not a fan, but he was upfront about what he wanted to do, people presumably took it seriously. This is what the American people voted for, not they are going to get it.

from around feb 2016 to november 2024, the democratic party has been based around opposition to one man. not to pushing some policies, not even necessarily agitating against some policies. but about stopping one vulgar man from getting into office.
it looks like america choosing this man for a second time has broken the core of the party.
in their maniacal obsession with this man, they haven't just elevated him, they have also alienated, maybe permanently, large parts of their voter base, and have suppressed all other paths forward, alternative ideas on what to stand for as a party.

i wonder what they will come up with for next time. anti-immigration and anti-trans to satisfy the new culture, and pro-technocracy and pro-war to differentiate themselves from populism, seems to be the dominant strain right now. i wonder if they will be brave enough to put abortion into the mix.

By the way, did not see the guy Vivek Ramaswamy in any of the pics. Wasn't he also part of the DOGE team with Musk? Didn't he get a speech?

Yes, yes, its the Dems fault...

Trump asks if Spain is a BRICS nation. It's not. He then threatened 100 per cent tariffs on BRICS/Spain.

Trump says he's thinking of applying 25 per cent tariffs on Mexico and Canada from Feb 1.

Trump repeats request that NATO countries pay 5 per cent of GDP on defence. Not even the US does this.

President Trump has pardoned 1,500 people who stormed the Capitol four years ago to block his successor from taking office, including 174 charged with using weapons or assaulting police and conspirators who plotted "to oppose by force the lawful transfer of presidential power."

To clarify this, Trump commuted the sentences of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers convicted in seditious conspiracy cases. He has pardoned everyone else who was convicted, including those who assaulted the police. And he has ordered DOJ to drop any pending cases.

All of the people convicted of assaulting Police officers have been pardoned.

Trump was asked about rioters who had assaulted the police.

He said they had already spent a long time in jail and "what they've done to these people is outrageous."

Not even going to hide it, Trump confirms those convicted of assaulting police were not just wrapped up in the 1500 blanket, he knew they were getting a Pardon.

the musk salute is absolutely unhinged

shouldn't be all like all banding together right now to try and stop the nazi's or something?

I see the tragi-comedy shit show has started much as expected.

Anyone who voted for trump really shouldn't be allowed out of the house without adult supervision.

i think we found out a lot about ourselves in the past year watching what was happening in gaza.
for me personally, it confirmed that i value my job more than my ethics. my employer has multiple pro-zionism and pro-israel activities, and invests in israel, and i live and pay taxes in the US, and so i directly contribute to genocide. there are of course a roughly equal number of people who are pro-genocide, and a vanishingly small number with the ethics and the guts to do something against it. i guess we'll get the same pattern here.

I think since Musk got involved the situation just became hopeless in the eyes of most people and everyone is too exhausted to fight now.

i think the size of the defeat is a factor. nothing this time about the popular vote, and the real majority, etc.
the utter hollowness of the biden admin, especially since 2022 by which time he had passed his 2 bills, or oct 7 2023, since when he has burned credibility with most activists, is also a big factor. there is nothing to rally around.

Yup. People are jaded and demoralised.

Birthright citizenship, which guarantees automatic US citizenship to people born on US soil, is protected by the 14th amendment and Trump’s efforts to upend the right will almost certainly be challenged in court.

The order specifies that it would limit birthright citizenship if a person’s “mother was unlawfully present in the United States and the father was not a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident at the time of said person’s birth,” or “when that person’s mother’s presence in the United States at the time of said person’s birth was lawful but temporary.”

that second clause is something else! trump and his voters feed of others' misery.

The scope of the birthright citizenship executive order is broader than some rumors had it. The denial of birthright citizenship would apply not just to U.S. born children of *undocumented immigrants* but to anyone who did not have a parent who was at least a permanent resident.
I believe retroactive application of the rule also would affect the citizenship of Usha Vance, Bobby Jindal, and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Trump has just signed an order that, whilst will likely be struck down in the courts, has just make his VP's wife likely to be stripped of citizenship.

Yes, it must be exhausting and extremely difficult to find anything to pin hope on. Power, wealth, and propaganda are concentrated in the hands of a few, who use these tools to push self-serving agendas while ignoring science, ethics, and inclusivity. Platforms like X amplify division, normalize hate speech, and spread misinformation, making it nearly impossible to fight back effectively. Marginalized groups are scapegoated, while so many Americans have been conned into supporting policies that harm them, driven by fear, misinformation, and a need to defend their identity.

guessing this will be some kind of AI grift, making money for his donors and supporters, while burning a bunch of useful programs

Yep this seems to be the case. The current situation reminds me of the Matt Christman bit about how the difference between Dems and Republicans is the framing of empire violence.

With the failures of the Biden administration large sections of the American public have given up on pretending to “care”. With Trump in office Americans now get to hit full speed on the most stupid and outwardly selfish versions of themselves.

Thanks for the update.

saw someone on twitter explain that this would mean kamala couldn't be a citizen. i also know of someone in a similar situation - born to immigrant parents on a work visa. she's over 30 now and has spent all 30 years in the US.

all i can say is that i hope a lot of trump voters, especially the new 2024 voters, are deported under this, or have their parents or kids deported.

So was watching a shocking interview of a former police officer who was assaulted during riot doing his job that day. He and his family have been threatened and abused since testifying in Congress on the events that day. The people who assaulted him have been pardoned. His response on how he feels was simple. He said Trump had announced this decision on the day he decided to rerun! So he squarely put this on the people who voted him in. It was so sad to hear this guy and his utter helplessness. I think as the months roll on, more and more people will get to see what they voted for.

Its kind of sad but im at a point where I've never wished more harm upon others than I do now. Guess I'm some ways you can say I'm part of the problem now.

This is what over half the country wanted.

For those that will be harmed and voted against this, I feel awful for you. You did all you could.

For those who voted for Trump or did not vote at all and are harmed? I feel nothing for you. This is your legacy. I hope you enjoy everything you justly deserve.

Rule of law is dead and the masses cheer while he entertains them with proverbial gladiatorial games.

The executive can pardon whoever they want for any reason at any time that's the law, Ford granted Nixon a pardon for watergate, Clinton pardoned his drug dealing half brother and billionaire fugitive Marc Rich because he donated heavily to the democrats, Biden pardoned like 8500 people, including his entire family, Fauci and the J6 commitee pre emptively knowing Trump would target them etc etc.

Its always been politics man, almost never for the public good.

Pretty crazy though hes doing exactly what he said he would i thought some of this was playing to the masses, especially the gender/DEI stuff and the deportations but it seems like ICE and homeland security are going to go wild.

I say this apologetically to all the good people from the US in this thread and more generally. But I hope for something to go so catastrophically wrong in the US that it totally disintegrates the grip of populist self indulgent leaders that currently holds US, and frankly global, politics.
