The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

I agree with access to healthcare, education etc to rehabilitate themselves but depending on the seriousness of the crime they shouldn't be allowed the same luxuries as a regular citizen.

This kind of thinking is exactly why most prisons do nothing to improve countries.

If I put you in a jail cell for 4 years and asked you to move contagious corpses around, for $2 an hour, what do you think would happen to you?

It’s cool for you to value punishment over redemption and rehabilitation. But you can be on a better end of that. A nicer end.

I think it would be a great idea to pay them minimum wage and have most of their pay go into a savings account so that they have a little something when they come out of jail. Could potentially go a long way to reducing recidivism.

Those in on life sentences could give the funds to a beneficiary when they die.

Not a bad idea to be honest. On the surface at least. But yeah if you do work in prison, there would be less incentive to relapse into crime if you have some savings once you're out.

Alright. I was just pretty sure I didn't mention serial killers and rapists in my post. I haven't looked at the numbers, but I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say they don't make up the majority of your prison population. So I've no idea why you'd go there straight away.

I didn't say they should have the same rights as everyone else, but then they don't given they're, you know, imprisoned (and then I'd argue that the fact there are varying degrees of punishment for various crimes is precisely the way to take the seriousness of a crime into consideration, so get the strawmen out of here).
Anyway, the real issue I have is that you have a for-profit prison system where rich people benefit from people getting imprisoned because now they can exploit the prison population as a cheap labour force.
You didn't mention serial killers and rapist I did because those are the ones I'm referring to specifically not petty criminals. Maybe I should have phrased that better. The repeat offenders who have committed brutal crimes repeatedly. Kill/hurt children etc should get diddly squat. The first time offenders and younger people who will most likely turn their lives around do deserve a chance to be rehabilitated and reintroduce into society. Offering people like that a minimum wage as as savings like @Dwazza Gunnar Solskjær mentioned should definitely be considered.
It includes 40,000 people, for example, in jail for marijuana offenses. So, smoke weed and lose your right to vote (and get put in jail) - sounds a tad harsh don't you think?
That's why I specifically said depending on the seriousness of the crime. I'm speaking mainly about MS13 gangs and similar who behead and mutilate and will most likely do it again. People who have committed violent crimes repeatedly with no remorse. Repeat offenders who continue to hurt people. Young people and others who don't have a history of violence by all means help them as much as you can but not these hardened criminals who will contribute nothing to society.

I was specifically referring to violent repeat criminals. What percentage of hardened criminals do you think are successfully rehabilitated? I'd say it's a very small percentage and most of them go right back to a life of crime the minute they are released or out on probation.
Folks who have no previous criminal history and have a chance at a better life by all means help those and give them a fair chance.

You are not gonna rehabilitate anyone by locking them up, denying proper healthcare, and subjecting them to disgusting living conditions. In fact, that is how you create a mental health crisis.

Bloody soft-on-crime librul lefties wanting to reward murderers with PlayStations and plasma TVs!

Is anyone else signed up the Trump mailing list? I never didn't sign-up but I'm on there somehow, and it's been years of non-stop begging for money basically. I don't think I've received one email that didn't have a call to action button to donate. Since he lost it's ramped up massively, I've been getting 10/15 emails grifting for cash.

I receive multiple dozens a day, it seems. It’s just one mad dash for grift.

Have you ever tried to unsubscribe? The options are like;

Never taken the time to unsubscribe. I’ll bet that is a closed loop that will just result in more emails (if that’s possible).

With the last few day's shitshows presented by porridge-for-brain Giuliani and Myra Hindley or whoever the feck that woman is, I'm starting to think it's very unfair on banana republics to call the US a banana republic. This really is the next level.

I would also suggest starting a global campaign to start using the word Trump as an insult along the lines of Quisling.

Just like Trump to go for the biggest and best banana republic.

We have a minimum wage for prisoners. I mean, it's slightly lower than the other one, but still, they make at LEAST 75 cents per hour.
I guess the argument is that unlike most people earning minimum wage they don't have to pay transport to get to work... don't have to buy their food, pay for medical insurance or pay rent or for a car etc?

That said if they were paid a normal wage perhaps the additional could be better used for child support / payments to victims

I think the reality is more nuanced than gut reactions tend to make people think... I'm not sure people being paid normal minimum wage but low expenses and coming out with big savings after several years would be accepted as a good solution either

Don't really know how to square that circle

I think more than making them earn wages, the fact that a criminal record basically makes you a pariah on the job market for life is to blame for recidivism. In a job driven market, no one is going to hire the guy with a criminal record over the similar guy without one.

A criminal record basically means that you may have done your time, but we've not forgotten and your debt well never be fully repaid. Which to me, is understandable only in extreme cases like violent crime, serious sexual assault etc. A life of mediocrity over breaking into some rich dudes house when you're 18.2 is hardly fair if you ask me.

That's true, I've been to the suburbs of Dallas and you can't do anything without a car. It was tongue in cheek, poverty is poverty wherever you live.
When I first moved to this country people where shocked at me for walking a couple of miles to places. They said I could be murdered or mugged, I always said how could that be possible since there is no one walking except for me. This place is fecking weird.

Reading a string of Twitter comments here, from Trump voters and...well, as is the case generally: one really shouldn't allow oneself to be shocked, or even slightly surprised, by anything...but still:

Many of 'em actually seem to believe that the infamous rallies are significant: Trump had bigger rallies = he must be more popular among voters.

"I dont' know a single person who went to a Biden rally" = "the election was rigged".

They actually believe this. The idiocy is just...staggering.

Also, on a general note - it's feckin' depressing to see the sheer scale of bot generated comments in any Twitter thread that has anything remotely to do with the election.

It's pollution - detrimental as feck to...everything: democracy, sanity, humanity, whathaveya.

And honest (if arguably a bit stupid, or at least naive, or uninformed) people keep responding to the bloody bots, generating further responses, etc.

Brave new world.

Hate talk radio and right wing echo chambers repeat this, it's no wonder they believe it.
