The thing I hate most about Trump is that he's so unbelievably stupid, corrupt, unscrupulous and stupid again that he's normalised being an utter bastard. Even someone as useless as Johnson looks better than him. That's how bad Trump is.
It still hasn't sunk in that he won the previous election. How the hell does something like that even happen in a country with over 300M citizens, laughable.
The main reason is the electoral college benefited his election despite losing by 2.8M votes overall.
But going beyond that there are educational failures, a selfish culture, a divisive media, and an infectious disease known as hate talk/right-wing radio.

Guess what I knew that Trump was lying back in March as well am I now culpable too. I have no authority to affect policy just as Woodward doesn’t.
If you are focusing on Woodward you’ve lost the plot.
Yes, because you can only focus on one thing at any one time, and there can only be one person who has any responsibility towards anything on a given subject. So we can only talk about Trump when it comes to COVID-19 in the US and criticizing Woodward in any way is unthinkable. Got it.
I prefer my discussions more nuanced, but oh well.

Yes. If not by free will then he'll be escorted out of the White House. It really is that simple - Trump's signature no longer carries any more legal weight after january 20 2021 unless he is re-elected.
Ok, but here's my worry. Trump tries this and gets a certain fevrent amount of the country behind him. His usual lackeys in a still-GOP-held Senate foam at the mouth about how it's the only way forward for the country to keep it safe from the lying cheating anarchist Dems. A number of extremely red states declare they want the constitution changed.
What then? It doesn't have to reach the legal threshold to destroy the country.
Edit: we were talking about this happening if he gets another term, not this year. He definitely won't be able to do to this term, but after four more years of court stacking and gradually pushing fascist militarisation of policing, he could.

I doubt Pence is actually a human being. Have you maybe noticed there have been quite a few things done recently on Trumps orders that aren’t exactly legal? Do you think it was legal for the police to tear gas and baton a crowd of peaceful protestors so Trump could walk to a church?
This idea that the right thing will end up happening is dangerous. You have to make sure at every step of the way, these people are scum.
I agree with the bolded part, but the idea that Trump is going to «grab power» if he loses the election is absurd.
How, in practical terms, would that work? He has no authority after january 20 2021 unless he is re-elected. The US military would no longer answer to him (recent polls show that he has very little support among army personnel), the guy with the football would leave his side etc and power would automatically be transferred to the president-elect.
What is more realistic is him sabotaging the voting process so he can claim victory on election night before all the absentees have been counted, and then stuff the courts with filings for election fraud
If Biden has a big lead already on election night, then there is very little Trump can do. But that is not very likely IMO, the key states are getting closer .
It almost certainly won't happen of course. Just as a theoretical however, it would start with Trump insisting the election had been stolen and the Republican states refusing to sign off. You'd have mass protests which would inevitably face mass anti-Trump protests and lead to massive violence. Bear in mind all this would be happening in November, and Trump is still legitimately president then for 2 more months. He would then activate the national guard and probably try to activate regular military units, leading to a standoff with the chiefs of staff who he'd then replace. At this point violence is occurring hourly all over the country, the media is in complete meltdown and the clamour for the Supreme Court to intervene would be deafening. Except there probably isn't anything for the Supreme Court to actually rule on. The election was won fair and square by Biden. So Trump ratchets up his 'enemies of the people' rhetoric about SCOTUS this time, and tells his tens of millions of supporters that SCOTUS is part of the deep state/liberal puppets etc. By now there is absolute chaos, nobody knows what is going on, there are riots and violent clashes all over the country, politicians are coming out giving wildly inflammatory and contradictory opinions and making demands, and then.. who the feck knows. It's never happened before, it's totally unprecedented, so literally nobody knows what happens next.

In 2000, Bush "won" the Presidential election. He would have lost Florida with a full recount and Gore would have been President. The Dems capitulated and the GOP machine was in full flow. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility, no matter how unlikely, that they at least try. The got away with it before.
This is exactly what Trump wants to be fair.
I'd add that, in this kind of scenario, Trump would probably declare a State of Emergency somewhere along the way. No idea what that really means in the US, but I suppose it's something Trump as the still-sitting president could use to his advantage.
I mentioned this before, but I think it's possible that audio recordings of Trump admitting the seriousness of COVID-19 might have further ramped up public pressure on him. Trump cares about people's impressions of him more than anything else, so this may have made him respond with more serious public statements and measures on COVID-19.
Woodward was quoted on this earlier in the thread here, and his thinking was that he'd have more influence by releasing this information in the election period. So I'm saying that I disagree. Back in February/March, Woodward could not have known how Trump would continue. If Trump had turned on COVID-19in May, it would still be too late, but the recording would have no influence on the election anymore. And we can also see now that this has faded out in seconds, like any news on Trump - which I think Woodward could also have predicted.
Obviously, there was no certainty anywhere, but I think Woodward's better bet would have been to release the recordings back in February/March. (Obviously though, Trump's decisions are all Trump's responsibility.)

Too much emphasis on the military when he is setting up a litigation strategy based on Bush v Gore. The Supreme Court insisted on deciding that long before Jan.20 and that is what Trump will be trying for.
He'll declare victory the day after elections then file in courts to prevent mail-in ballots based on fraud. The SCOTUS will hear the case and resolve long before Jan.20 because the much less ideological Rehnquist court already set that precedent.
Trump will use the same argument Scalia used for Bush. Further counting of mail-in ballots will violate Trump's constitutional rights by delegitimizing the President and thus, in the best interests of the country the counting of ballots will be stopped. This legal argument worked in Bush v Gore so with the more conservative Roberts court its a fair chance Trump goes for that gamble.
Only way it doesn't work is if Biden wins resoundingly in every swing state. I'm not saying I think Trump using November to claim victory and clog the courts will definitely work or even that he will definitely do it, but its certainly well within the realm of possibility and everyone should be prepared for it.
Still one of the most disgustingly undemocratic court decisions in modern US history.
