Yup. If we ever needed a perfect example of what a fecking trainwreck Trump is, it’s that he’s managed to make Jeff fecking Sessions look like a reasonable adult by comparison. I don’t think anyone else could have achieved that.

Evangelical leader who believes COVID-19 is a ‘gift from god’ unveils strategy to keep Trump in office

On Saturday, The Intercept detailed a recent gathering of United in Purpose, a far-right evangelical group that plans to get President Donald Trump re-elected in 2020.

One of the group’s donors, Ken Eldred, espoused his beliefs on a call in mid-April.

“’The COVID virus has been a gift from God,’ began Ken Eldred. ‘The kingdom of God advances through a series of glorious victories, cleverly disguised as disasters.’ In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Eldred noted, millions of Americans are turning to Christ, Walmart is selling out of Bibles, and online church broadcasts have hit record numbers,” reported Lee Fang. “But while religiosity was growing, there have been setbacks from the disease outbreak. ‘Satan has been busy too,’ Eldred, a major donor to evangelical and Republican causes, explained. ‘The virus has messed up many of our plans involving our in-person meetings with voters.'”

He then led the group in a prayer to God to end the deaths — and the group discussed strategy to keep the president in office.

“The group, whose supporters include major donors to conservative causes, pastors, and political operatives with decades of winning elections, is serious about serving as the tip of the spear to maintain control of the White House,” wrote Fang. “UIP’s 2020 election plan — which it calls ‘Ziklag,’ a town referenced in the Bible — is a multipronged effort to connect Trump with evangelical leaders and increase support among minority voters through appeals to faith-based messages and church outreach.”

“And, perhaps most importantly, it plans to use data mining to identify millions of new voters and target them with cheap ads on Facebook,” wrote Fang. “The pandemic, speakers noted on the call, means that they must work overtime to compensate for the effects of mail-in voting.”

Eldred expressed this sentiment clearly when he told his fellows on the call, “The children of the darkness put early voting into this CARES package.”

It just blows my mind that somehow the wearing oif masks has even become a partisan issue now.

What a fecked-up, nasty country. Pissed off that I have to go back to sort out my affairs. I would love to just be done with the shithole.

I’m still hearing anecdotes locally of people getting coughed on and yelled at for wearing some sort of a mask. And all this is being egged on by this Yankee elite who doesn’t give a feck about them.

(Disclaimer: Yankee is just anyone north of the Mason-Dixon line for some Americans...)

I was supposed to start my masters this year in the US, delayed because of Covid. Even if Trump doesnt get reelected, I'm not sure if I want to go anymore. The number of right wing loons seem to increase every year.
 
The politicization of masks from Trump and his cultists is weird, indeed. It is close to unexplainable.

It's not weird. It's selfish meets stupidity.

Evil and vile perhaps but it's not exactly unexplainable. People have politicized alot of harmless things over the course of history.

The bad thing about democracy is everything goes for a vote.
 
Is there any other country in the world that has one of it's major parties claiming that the virus is fake? It's utterly bizarre and crazy. I can understand not agreeing with the way forward, but claiming it is fake and the other parties made up story to make them look bad is just plain crazy.

And then you have half the population actually going along with the idea :wenger:

I guess it depends on what part of it. In Santa Clara everything seems to be going fine. Last time I was in Walmart, literally everyone was wearing a mask. When I go running or walking, and there are people coming from the other side of the road, always it is either me or them who change the path in order to keep the social distance. And I have yet to hear about the MAGA protests here.

Dallas, Texas.
I've heard Dallas is relatively liberal, still not too keen on moving to Texas. Will try some uni in Cali or drop the idea of moving to US altogether.

The DFW metroplex (aka DAFW with Arlington lumped in) is a mix-bag of ideology. It's changing in areas but Texas overall is hotbed of religious and political ideology. It's among of a handful of reasons that are keeping me from making the move back to my hometown, Fort Worth.

But as is with many overpopulated cities in the US, it tends to draw more open-minded persons and liberal ideologies so there is hope going forward.

If you want a definitive more liberal area in Texas do choose Austin.
