As happy as I was when Spurs won the league cup, I'm far more satisfied with this season, even if we finish second and with a bad European showing. I guess people want to downplay it since it's not winning the league, but in my eyes I'll be proud of our season and the way we have played regardless of what people say.

You've improved on last season, played great football and broken some of your own records. So yeah, I think it's a be a good season for you guys. Most of your players have improved as well and it's probably been a more challenging season than last year given you've had a few more injuries to contend with.

But you ain't won anything. Would you still look on this season with the same fondness if you finished 7th next year and trophyless again? Like I said, we've still had a better season than you.

I would, personal preference I guess, but second is better than 5th or whatever. We are playing better football than most teams in the league, and that matters a lot to me. And although we don't have a trophy it's still a good season for us in my mind. Winning trophies is great, but to be fair, some trophies weigh higher than others and I personally wouldn't trade for the league cup.

Maybe it would be different if I had supported United over the last 20 years, when finishing 2nd is nothing special. But for us, it is our highest ever PL finish, and doing it with a core of young players who we have helped develop or buy on the cheap is great in my eyes.

Exactly :)

This is how I feel. It's easy to throw the 'you haven't won anything' argument, But this is the best we have ever done in the PL. I'm sure some Spurs fans go overboard in their praise for the team (and it is true we haven't won anything), but I don't agree with the response of having had a worse season than Arsenal if they happen to beat Chelsea in the FA cup final. Maybe that's just me though.

Table never lies. It will also help your status as a club given that's back to back CL qualification.

I understand his thinking. It's something I've noticed speaking to older Utd fans who speak very fondly about Tommy Docherty and 70s United. A decade which saw relegation and only one FA Cup but a decade which had exhilarating football to watch, a new young team coming of age and the supporters fully enthused following Utd home and away.

As Utd fans we've been blessed under Fergie to have so many special occasions - FA Cup Finals, European Cup Finals, 13 league titles - but seeing those older Reds tell stories of what the history books will show as a barren era puts it all in perspective. Fans don't lift the trophies. They take home the memories and a full season of great performances and football that gets you off your seat is something you can reminisce about more just as much - if not more - than a day out at Wembley.

It's similar to when I speak to the generation of Spurs supporters who went through relegation. They speak of it quite fondly and say it was one of the few times that it felt like the fanbase and the team were perfectly intertwined in support and there was a real feeling of togetherness and connection with the team.

This current squad has also re-United the team and fanbase after a period of a barren feeling of connection to the team.

I think you'd have to be happy with how things are going. Exciting, dynamic team of young players doing better than a Tottenham team has for decades, new stadium coming, and right up there in the table for the second year running. Definitely something to be proud and excited by.

(Although if you guys could just drop a couple of points in the next few weeks, that would be great thanks.. ;))

I agree with Kentonio and applaud Poch for assembling a dynamic and exciting side on such a shoestring budget. The way you are finishing suggests you are capable of winning the league in the near future. I am biased in expecting Chelsea to do it this time.
I think Spurs big challenge will be keeping the squad intact this summer with the added challenge of playing at Wembley rather than WHL.

Yeah, I think the thing that should make them feel a little less worried though is that all the top teams have some major challenges ahead too. United and City will spend big but have significant issues to resolve, Arsenal and Liverpool both look a way off (and Arsenal have the whole Wenger thing, plus maybe losing their best players) and Chelsea have to show we're not just a team who (hopefully) win a title on the back of no European football. We need to raise our game and deepen our squad to stay on top before our own move to Wembley. It doesn't make Spurs challenge easier, but it's probably a good time to be doing it.

Good points Kentonio though I tend to think Utd will be stronger next season after JM gets some of his own players and likewise you would expect City to splash the cash. Arsenal re Wenger will likely go on to the detriment of the club and Liverpool need investment in the squad and I am not sure they will get it.

As you guys referring to next season, I see many difficulties for Tottenham to replicate what they have done this season:

Good signs for them:
+ Chelsea and Liverpool will have to compete in Europe (either CL or EP)
+ They are a rising team. This would be probably the best sign for them. This season is better than last season. So next season, there probably will be another improvement.

Bad signs for them:
- Less home ground effects. This would probably the biggest problem for them. They stand 1st on home while 4-5 on away game tables respectively. A move to Wembley will reduce that home ground advantage (just see West Ham and Spurs records at Wembley in Europe this season - both are terrible).
- United and City will improve a lot. Pep and Jose are not kinds of managers who are not able to recognize their problems and transform their squads. Especially, Jose often wins the league in his second year at his clubs. Both will have a massive amount of money to spend also.
- Chelsea will spend big too. Just because there is so much money in our pocket (kidding :D but that's true)
- Not sure if Spurs will spend big, despite of some lacking in depth in the squad. History say no, unless they are going to sell 1-2 stars which is unlikely this summer.

I don't mention about Arsenal because there are so many possibilities can happen to them this summer, either in a good way or bad way for them.

Anyway, Spurs is having a very good season. The league is till not over also.

Quite remind me of Luka Modric case, who also had 4 years in his contract left when he wanted a move away.

I bet he will stay at Spurs next season. In summer 2018, he will be offered abroad if the situation is then till unsolved.

Would you consider it a positive season?

For United? Win the Europa, and I'd consider it a 6/10 season. CL football next season and a trophy. If we fail to win the Europa but finish in the CL places, I'd rate the season quite a bit lower. Fail to win the Europa, fail to finish at least 4th and it'd be a terrible season, league cup or otherwise.

I look at Spurs and see a well functioning team whose manager is not afraid to use young players to good effect. I'm envious of that fact. Their inability to properly compete for trophies, not so much.

I don't think they can really be criticised for not winning a trophy this season. They played well in the FA Cup semi final and are still in the race for the title at this stage of the season even if their chances are very slim. Their European campaign was embarrassing but I don't think anyone can argue with credibility that we have had a better season if we win the Europa League.

how about they do win something thought before the media proclaim them the greatest team in the history of football as they seem intent on doing

Say we win the Europa league, we'll have 2 trophies and champions league football and they'll have 0 trophies and champions league football. I know what I'd rather have.

What? A club winning 2 trophies including the EL would be considered to have a worse season than one which won nothing just because they finished 2nd in the league?

Let's see if we can win that second trophy first!
If we can, with our money and manager, there's no reason we can't shop at the top table of transfer targets in the summer.

It's more than finishing second (which isn't confirmed). They have improved on last season, play far better football and have a manager who gets the best out of his squad. I'd trade the League Cup and our Europa League run for that in an instant.

And Arsenal was born.

IF only Net Spend is considered, and IF only the figures above are considered, then not them but we - Chelsea with 30M Net Spend higher than Spurs - is the most impressive club if we win the league this season :D

This is what I absolutely agree.

I'd argue that's more impressive for Chelsea. 16 points difference despite throwing 3/4 of a season away. The difference in 'net spend' is essentially the acquisition of Kante, who is the PL player of the season.

What if they carry this form in to next season? Their team will be settled, some new signings to freshen things up, 2018 could easily be their season.

Another pre season in the market like the last and they'll do nothing.

Poch is still dodgy in that area I think.

I would be surprised if they carry their great home form to wembley next season. They have been poor there in the CL

History won't remember any of that.

Does anyone have any information as to whether or not there is any truth to the speculation around Kyle Walker? Trippier is good, but Kyle walker brings that extra physicality, pace and power on the side that is extremely important.

Is Alderweireld available for as little as £25m this summer ?

No, there is a clause in his contract that only becomes active when his current contract enters it's last year. So if he does not sign a new contract then the clause comes into effect next summer I think. I expect him to sign a new contract before then though.

Not sure but there have been suggestions that Walker was angry he was dropped for the FA semi and that he now wants to leave. Whether this is true or not is pure speculation.
