The Rugby League Thread | Aussies win WC final

Classy cas at it again

They're brilliant to watch, I really hope they win something this year

Wire, Wigan and my team Leeds all losing again too. The league is castlefords to lose at this point.

Agreed. Obviously I hope Wigan turn it around and come good at the business end but I wouldn't begrudge Cas a trophy or two, they've been great.

The league leaders' shield yeh, the play-offs will be completely different

Agree entirely with Anthony Minichello re these games, the RFL don't care about players, playing Friday and then Monday twice in the season is a joke, particularly if you are Catalan or away to Catalans in one of the games. The game is too quick, and too physically demanding to be playing again so quickly

Considering what a relatively poor season it's been for Wigan cautious optimism is back. We've defended much better in the past couple of matches (and even scored a few points), I'll be sneaking down to Wembley for the cup final and there's an outside chance of a top four finish. It could all evaporate very quickly with a few defeats in the next matches but for now it's good to feel positive.

Does anyone on here follow Super League? Did a thread search and could not find one.. i don't have a team but keep an eye on Leigh, Salford and Leeds (my mate is a huge Leeds Rhinos fan so although there's our football rivalry i do have a soft spot).

Anyway be good to discuss if anyone else is into it or you all Union fans?

Hull KR fan here, bad time to be one with FC looking so strong and us epically blowing the million pound game fairly recently.

You get used to it as a Robin though. Must be how it feels being an Everton or Man City fan :)

I'm sorry to stick the boot in as I wanted Cas to win but they've been so poor on the biggest stage of all. Leeds have played well but whether it's failing to adapt to the conditions, Hardaker's tomfoolery upsetting their preparation or a good old-fashioned choke Cas have been extremely disappointing, as in truth has the match generally. Hats off to Leeds though, they're winners.

Predictions for new season? Just want my buddy Stevie Ward to stay fit . His bravery in the grand final to play a week after dislocating shoulder was phenomenal, he was given a world cup squad place for england but had to turn down to be be operated on. Cas will be strong again , bit worried for Salford (love the new kit) ,losing Ben Murdoch Massila is a shame. Bring on February.

Bit early for predictions for next season as we don't have the full squads in place yet.

At this stage the focus is still on the world cup, surely? Just watched England's semi final against Tonga, and what a game that was! Catch the highlights if you can. You can't help feeling it was a battle to decide who'll be runners up to the Aussies though.

Two minutes left, the Aussies are winning 6-0 and both sides are knackered.

I’m by no means a Rugby League fan and don’t know much about the game BUT isn’t it a little unfair to have an Australian referee refereeing a World Cup final which features Australia in Australia?

Jesus England were out on their feet, what a great effort. They were wide open at the end but we didn't have the energy to come up wit ha decent enough play to tie the game up.

It wouldn't happen in a fair dinkum World Cup. Puts the ref himself in a terrible position.

Even as an Aussie, this has a feeling of meh, who cares? about it.

4 officials in charge of this match, 2 Aussie's and 2 Englishmen. It wasn't the best performance by a ref, and certainly not in a world cup final, but I've seen plenty worse than that over the years.

Why is that? Seems no one really cares about this tournament

If Australia wins a World Cup, normally i'm pretty happy about it. With this though, i couldn't have given two shits.

Completely agree in principle but the ref did pretty well today, and actually the English video ref, Ben Thayler, was a tad harsh in disallowing a second Aussie try.

Great game that though, in terms of digging deep into physical reserves, and on reflection, very little between the teams.

You haven't said why though? Are you not a RL fan or did you think the tournament was a procession for the Aussies? Surely England's performance in the final added meaning to your nation's achievement in winning it?

I'll admit i'm more of a union fan but i do follow league. i find it very difficult to get emotionally invested in international rugby league. A feeling of expecting Australia to win easily whenever they play plays a part. I actually wanted to see England or Tonga would win the final because i think that would have been the best thing for international rugby league.

As i say, i find it very difficult to get emotionally invested in international rugby league. State Of Origin though is a different story. If Queensland was leading a State Of Origin decider 6-0 at half time, i'd be extremely nervous. If Queensland was leading a State Of Origin decider 6-0 with ten minutes to go, i'd find it hard to watch. I don't get that way with

Harsh? How?

Valiant effort by England just too many simple mistakes . For a 6-0 score though it was highly entertaining. Was appalled by lack of press coverage here in the UK.
How the heck do you grow the sport here? It can be the most enthralling viewing at times yet the RFL seem to have no idea how to market it. And i think it was piss poor considering that they have the Super League rights that sky only mentioned the final the day before the game - and that seems down to pettiness because they were not showing the game themselves. Yet when its Wimbledon or the Ashes even if not covering it they make a big deal over it. I was not proper fan until 3 years ago and just going to a few games had me hooked due to it's intensity and speed. Now my eldest plays for a local team and we go to 4 or 5 games a season plus the grand final.

I don’t think you can push it
To the casual fans, rugby is union

The WC although better than usual with players leaving NZ to play for their actual countries helped a lot- but the international game is still a bit of a joke, and that is all the media can care about when they compete for space/time with football

International union is a better game, but club league is IMO better than club union
