The Rugby League Thread | Aussies win WC final

Our 19 for the World Club game tomorrow:

John Bateman, Joe Burgess, Tony Clubb, Morgan Escaré, Liam Farrell, Ben Flower, Anthony Gelling, Oliver Gildart, Willie Isa, Thomas Leuluai, Liam Marshall, Frank-Paul Nuuausala, Sean O’Loughlin, Sam Powell, Ryan Sutton, Taulima Tautai, Lewis Tierney, Joel Tomkins, George Williams

I expect Marshall and possibly Isa/Tautai to miss out.

As well as the fact that they're an awesome team generally the worry for most Wiganers I know is our backs under the high ball. Escaré will be given a real examination and Burgess made an absolute mess of one against Salford.

Just got in to see Wire 20-6 up against Brisbane. Early in the game yet but a lovely surprise after the pastings the SL clubs suffered last year.

Get in. Great performance after last week. Got a bit tasty in 2nd half. Ref was pretty good (take note oliver and co). Thought we were going to get mullered but boys did well. Play like that for rest of season and could be a good one.

I know SL teams are only one competitive game (and pre-season) in
How far are the NRL sides behind, when does their season start?

Not expecting Wigan to win tomorrow, didn't expect Warrington to today either mind

Wire are playing well. Massive improvement over last week. Brown has made a good impact.

Recorded last week's game but then binned it when I found out the result

Very good showing tonight though, and hope for a Wigan win tomorrow too.

Season starts in 2 weeks.

As a Broncos fan I hate to see us lose but I honestly only care about getting out of England with no injuries. Hell of an effort I thought though all of our players managed to have massive shockers in one game. Hopefully it's out of the system now and a much better showing in our first real game.

Leeds should've signed Kevin brown, he's the exact player we are missing he can kick and can create.

We've just got a bunch of overrated youth that really aren't up to the required standard. Yet the club refused to sign any players in the off season. A joke considering rhinos probably generated the most cash of any team.

I missed the game but it sounded like Wire played very well; with Gidley at fullback, Kevin Brown on debut and Mike Cooper on his return the standouts. I don't support Warrington very often but this was a very nice surprise. I hope Wigan can emulate their achievement later today.

The change a few seasons ago to make the corner flag not in touch has brought about some fantastic acrobatic finishes in the corner

It has mate. Brilliant result for Wigan today..well done, Pies, I can go back to despising you now ;)

Same goes for Wire. I know it's only two games, but I hope Super League and the England national team can hold their heads a little higher after this series.

Be interesting to see how this plays out

Looking at that article- selling near on 10,000 tickets- that is awesome- i really hope its a success, trying to convince my buddy who lives there to take his boys along.

He played union and toured scotland for canada in his teens so im trying to make him see the light that this is the better code.

Will be interesting to see how Toulouse do this season as well, promoted into the Championship (currently 4th, W1L1)

Wigan's game with Widnes has been postponed because the adverse weather has meant the pitch can't host two games in quick succession according to Lenagan: http://wiganwarriors.com/news/2017-02-23-widnes-game-postponedhttp

I'm disappointed that I won't be able to get down there to welcome the boys back as world champions and once again the clash between us and Wigan Athletic at the DW has affected our fixtures.

There's a rumour that the pitch isn't bad at all and Wigan just want a break after the Cronulla game. Either way, pain in the arse.

Wow. Cas

4 tries in 9 mins or something
Ripping Warrington apart, scored the four tries of five attacking sets without Warrington having the ball once in that time

Not the best week to be a Salford fan. First Carneys ban was seriously harsh and then we got absolutely robbed at Leeds tonight. We had a perectly good try chalked off for whatever reason and Leeds winning try and the end was ridiculously forward. Really annoying. We need too stop giving so many penalties away though in the oppositions half.

I haven't seen the highlights yet, but that sounds brutal.

I expected more rotation from Wigan, we looked tired and were outplayed for the majority of the game before roaring back in the last 20 minutes. Happy to get the win in a hastily-scheduled hard fought away game. The build-up was farcical and embarrassing but at least we've ended up with the two points, now hopefully we can avoid serious censure from the RFL (even though we deserve it).

On second viewing it looks like there was maybe 3 forward passes involved in their last try. Stuff like that really is frustrating but I suppose it's nice too know we can really test teams now though.

I looked up the Wigan score and 3 drop goals to win the match is hilarious! Imagine how the Widnes players felt after everything what went on as well. Good luck with the RFL, you never know what will happen with them. They're so inconsistent with theirs rulings.

It'd make sense hardaker going to Cas considering Luke dorn has retired now, tbh they've built a really solid team at Cas, they've got good powerful forwards, creative half backs in rangi chase and Luke Gale and a speedy skilfull backline. They could be a dark horse next season I think.

Our squad was announced today and it's crap, we are losing Zak hardaker and we've given Ashton Goulding the number 1 jersey which is disgrace as he's still too raw for that. Gary Hetherington is one of the tightest owners in super league, last season we signed nobody to replace them and this off season our only recruits have been 2 championship players. I'm not expecting much from next season already.

Starting to regret not putting a tenner on Cas to win the GF now....I wrote the above quotes back in November

They look brilliant, absolutely dismantling rhinos as I said in my other quote back in November

I know my shit 3 months before it happened

Castleford have been incredible so far. The improvement has been gradual over the last few years, after many years of being pretty godawful. Powell has done a great job.

I hope we can push for a CC or a GF appearance. I've not seen us lift a pot since the old Regal Trophy in 94 when I was a nipper. It's a small sample size, these few opening games, but I don't remember us ever playing this well.

Cas are the real deal

Only just caught up on the Cas v Leeds highlights. Some awesome tries and a comprehensive dismantling of their opponents. Wire's fairly narrow loss against them doesn't look quite as bad now!

What about the one to Salford lol
Not a bad start to the season for us! Still got 5 or 6 players to come back into the squad so hope it's going to be a good year. Could of been higher in the table as well if we got a point against Leeds which we should've definitely got!

It's the best I've seen us play since we got to the play-offs in 2005. Finally it feels good too support Salford haha.

It's a little strange this year leeds(although I knew it), saints and wire not looking brilliant at all so far.

If Cas are going to do something then this is the year to do it.

So caught a bit of Premiership Rugby today...I liked how the refs are mic'd up.....Do rugby refs get as much shite as football refs?

Till the RFL find another excuse to end our season for us. One way or another they always pull a rabbit out of the hat. Still a promising start, and so good to see Blease back at the club, a great servant during his time as a player, it makes feel old to say I saw his debut.

I tell you what, all this talk of Haye carrying on for 5 rounds on Saturday is nothing compared to Greg Inglis on Saturday morning, did his ACL in the 7th minute of the Rabbitohs first game and carried on till into the second half, oh and scored a try as well. Out for the season mind, but that's just freaking crazy.

Let's hope they don't! Let's also hope Marwan stays a bit quieter this year like he has been doing so far. Think we already had a dodgy decision from the RFL too ban Carney. Blease looks to be a great addition but I hope he will get this idea of having a drum at the matches out of his head!

Yeah rugby league players are so tough they just don't know when to stop for their own good.

Looking forward to this game, be tough for Wigan with their injuries
Always a really high-intensity in games between these two
