The Rugby League Thread | Aussies win WC final

Shocking attendance, wish the RFL would stop trying to flog the game in parts of the country that aren't interested.

Yeah Simms from what I've heard from Warrington fans is premier in terms of mouth, fronting up to opposition and general leadership but what he does with the ball is nothing special. Ben Westwood is a great player (I've hated him throughout his career so he's obviously doing something right) but perhaps the years are catching up with him now. Same goes for Gidley, great player but not getting any younger. Sandow I agree is superb on his day, but he had injuries and after a great start fizzled out a little bit last season. I don't think Warrington have seen the best of Dodds but I agree he's got some class.

They've brought Mick Cooper back from St. George, I don't know what you thought of him in the NRL but he was good for Warrington when he was here. They've also taken Dom Crosby from us, a young prop who not a lot of opposition fans seem to rate but I like him and think he'll do well for them.

I was sent my season ticket renewal yesterday so I've already started to look forward to the upcoming season. If United continue their indifferent form into the new year I can seek solace in the rugby around February time.

That's what I usually do. United's bad form I could stomach because rhinos were successful and played brilliant rugby but last year was dire on all fronts. Rhinos and united were crap.

The attendance looks decent to me. That's more than can be said for England's performance this half.

All feels a bit pointless international RL. You would need to be in your 50s to remember England/GB actually beating Australia when it mattered.

I know the feeling. I generally fell out of love with Football a bit and watched more NBA then ever. Bad thing for me is my team in that sport the Knicks are terrible as well.

Out of the frying pan. I was in college in 2005/06 when Wigan were utterly dire, Saints were awesome and Chelsea looked like they were going to win the title ad infinitum. That was about as dark as it ever got with my United/Wigan combo.

Cant wait for the new season to start. Whos teams have new players they are looking forward to seeing play?

Im looking forward to see what kevin brown can do for us, always did well against us when at huddersfield. Also glad currie, russell and patton have signed extensions. Just hope currie recovers well from his injury.

Yeah Currie will be a miss for you. Naturally I'm looking to see how Dom Crosby will go (I think he'll do well) and I think getting Mike Cooper back could be a great move. I've not been keen on your forwards for while, it seems you've gone from the likes of Morley, Carvell, Cooper to a pale imitation but you've taken steps back in the right direction in my opinion.

For Wigan I'm keen to see how Joe Burgess will readjust to our league after a pretty patchy spell down under. I've heard he's gained a bit of bulk but if he's kept his pace he could be quite something. Once Manfredi comes back (none the worse for his injury!) our flanks could be up there with the best. I'm also keen to see how Tommy Leuluai, Tomkins (when fit) and Escare will share positions. Ideally I'd like Escare at FB, Tomkins/Williams in the halves with Tommy filling in there and spelling at hooker. If they can all be fit and firing with Powell and Shorrocks amongst it too I'm liking our options in those key positions.

Yeah interested to see if Cooper has improved after his stint in Aus. Dont really know anything of Crosby. Just glad Hill has signed extension as hes our best front rower by a mile.

Can see it being between you lot, us and hull again this season. Will be interesting to see how leeds do after their poor season.

I've heard good things of Cooper in Aus, I think he'll do the business and Crosby's strong and dependable with years left in him and room to improve. Chris Hill is indeed head and shoulders above the others, but then again you can make a very good unit with a bit of class and some proper workhorses, which you've got now.

I think those teams you mention will make up the top four, maybe Saints sneaking in ahead of Leeds. I think Cas will still be good but losing Denny Solomona will be big for them.

I'm not really looking forward to it tbh we've signed feck all players just a couple from championship.

After the season we've just had you'd think recruitment would be top priority but instead they've promoted a few youth players up (which aren't good enough) and kept the underachievers for some reason. I admire the way wire do business, tbh rhinos should've been all over Kevin brown too because we need a decent stand off as McGuire is basically a walking injury and not getting any younger plus brown is a decent goal kicker which we haven't had since sinfield retired

Bradford Bulls have been liquidated. There's talk now of a new Bradford club either starting in the Championship with -12 points or in L1 from zero. Most Bulls I've heard from would prefer the latter: get the bulk of the coaching staff, academy and as many players as are willing on board as quickly as possible and have a clean break from scratch.

Either way it's a sobering day for League fans everywhere. I hope it goes well for whatever RL entity pops up in Bradford.

Yeah such a shame the way things went for them, I'm a rhinos fans and it wasn't that long ago whenever rhinos played at Odsal there would be 20k+ there each time. They used to get healthy amounts too for the other Yorkshire clubs that came over.

Hope it works out for them in the future.

Think its appalling that Bradford have been able to keep the bulls moniker , other than the points deduction it gets them off scott free although im sad for their fans they should have been made to start from the bottom.

Can't wait for the season to start, may be going Saints vs Leeds on thursday night.

Yup they have basically got away with it. Bit crap really for the teams like Whitehaven and Workington who could of took the place of Bradford.

Predictions for this season?

League Leaders : Warrington
Challenge Cup: Castleford
Grand Finalists Wigan & Hull

Champions: Wigan

Can't wait for the season too start but y team Salford already have some lengthy injuries. We don't have that big of a squad this year either so I'm really fearing for the worst.

Never really followed the sport until I met my other half, but now I'm hooked.

Followed Warrington and Leigh, but will be solely Leigh this season now they have been promoted. Hopefully we manage to sneak into the Super 8s but I'm not so sure.

League Leaders: Warrington
Challenge Cuo: Leeds
Grand Final Winners: Saints

Anyone else heard about the RFL apparently paying certain players at top clubs £25k too stop them from going to the NRL because the clubs had fully spend to the salary cap? Bit of a disgrace if true considering my team (Salford) got a big point deduction for going over the cap last year even though it was apparently the RFL's fault for not filing paper work quick enough.

The underhandedness of it stinks but I'm not surprised they're trying to find ways to undermine the salary cap. At its current level it is perpetuating mediocrity by imposing a race to the bottom.

Saints vs Leeds tonight. Both teams looking understandably rusty in attack but have got stuck in defensively.

Come on the Wire...

Hear, hear!

Really hoping for a grand final win this time around after three losing finals in (I think) five years. What's happened to Kevin Brown though? Not named in the matchday squad for tomorrow.

He's injured I think...

Wigan are off the mark, 16-26 at Salford. We were great in the first half then sloppily let Salford back in, who to be fair to them didn't give up.

All in all pleased with an opening day win.

Poor result tonight. Thought we were rusty and missing some key players which didnt help. Think if we had Ratchford we would have been far better, Russell was no where near his usual self. Thought catalan were playing for a lot of penalties, and ref gave some odd calls and was not consistent. But fair play to catalans they fought harder and played better.

Yeah was pretty shit...hopefully get a few players back for Round 2...

I've heard of clubs doing other things to get around the salary cap such as employing girlfriends of players as 'admin staff' or similar and giving them a high wage.

Nice one. One of friends plays for Leigh. Won't name him though because I don't want my identity to be revealed :D
