The Rugby League Thread | Aussies win WC final

The highest praise I can give George Williams kicking game in and around the tryline is in the SL, he looks NRL quality

Don't know if he's that good, he just stands out as being head and shoulders ahead of the rest in SL

Of course, he's been great in our league but the NRL is another level. To be honest I expect him to try his luck eventually.

Wigan have been good, but Warrington haven't been at it. I'm annoyed a poor read by young Brucie has given them a foothold, the Wolves aren't done yet.

Looking forward to this game, be tough for Wigan with their injuries
Always a really high-intensity in games between these two

What injuries do Wigan have? Just as well they have them looking at the half-time score.

Burgess, Tierney injured against Leigh
Tomkins as well
Mossop? Manfredi? McIllorum? Crosby? Bateman? Gildart?

Not sure if that is all, and probably not any more than Warrington to be fair

EDIT
That try should kill the game at 6-26, kill Warrington spirit and morale as much as anything

Mossop's at Salford and Crosby's at Warrington (not in the squad) but yes that's it. As you say Warrington also have men missing.

Wigan had a hell of a game against Huddersfield earlier today, finishing in a 16-16 draw. I'd thought they were a fairly poor team and, even though injuries are starting to pile up again, I expected us to win quite convincingly. However we were off colour with some sloppy carrying, poor discipline and toothless attacking play resulting in a real slog of a performance. Huddersfield were pretty good and in the end let us off the hook, with Brough missing two drop goal attempts and a penalty kick that you'd expect him to convert 99% of the time.

We've gone top because Castleford lost, but that was a reality check today. When we're good we're good but when we're off form we are very ordinary.

Salford fans must be loving life at the moment? New contracts for key players, playing well , and looks like Kukash is looking to stay , a shame the city as a whole doesn't get behind the team.

Saw a tweet by Kukash earlier saying the fans need to match the clubs effort and it's on them now- i see his point but with such poor support he needs to realise its ongoing and they could be doing more, they have pop up stands every few weeks in and around salford selling tickets and merch but they do it all during working hours for people- i mentioned this on an instagram post by the clubs account and it got swiftly deleted by them.

The council could do more to seen as it's the city's biggest sporting team other than neville's mob. In Leigh for instance they have signs all over advertising upcoming home games and also have a sign as you enter Leigh stating it's the home of Leigh Centurions. Something along those lines would help.

Also RL in general needs to up its game ticketing wise, it seems for the more casual fans who want to buy within a couple of weeks of the game have to either go to the ground to collect or pay on the door, why they can't bloody post them i don't know.

Same in Wigan, posters up around the town when we have any big matches. I understand Koukash isn't everybody's cup of tea, but he's put his money where his mouth is and given Salford fans something to shout about. The least the council could do is back him and the team in the ways you suggest.

The council have backed the club more than they really should with all the loans they've given them, it's well over £1.5m over the past few years and nothing has been paid back yet. The problem for the club is the location of the stadium, it's so out of the way for the traditional heartbeat fans of the club. For me I could walk to the ground in 10/15 minutes as a kid, then when I moved to where I am now I was only another 10 minutes extra. Now it's bus journeys and on a weekend they are quite infrequent, add to that the traffic issues in terms of getting into the stadium's car parks, as nice as the AJ Bell stadium is, it isn't brilliant. That being said, I really don't know where else they could have put a stadium like that in the city, where everyone would have flocked to and not caused to many complaints from the locals.

As for the playing side, slowly but surely they are improving. Koukash thought he could throw money at the club and make it happen in much the same way we've seen at certain football clubs, but Salford needed more than that.

Yeah.....Warrington are fecked

Hull And Leeds next too. Can't see them winning either of those either.

Wigan had a strange game with Hull tonight, wasteful of good field position, clueless in attack and poor defensively in the first half to go in 18-0 down. We conceded another try early in the second half then came roaring back to within two points, eventually losing 22 - 20. We'll take heart from the second half effort, particularly from some of the kids we've had to promote, but really we gave the game away with some very poor stuff in the first 40.

Tony Smith has to be coming under serious pressure now, but who's on the cards if the board decides to pull the trigger?

Can't think of any decent coaches tbh it's not Tony smiths fault, he's a great coach this one is purely down to the players imo

Can i ask from salford shopping city are there any buses that go down that way? I want to take my lad to a game but from where i live jumping on the Busway down to Leigh would be easier it seems ?

Cracking win for Salford last night, hopefully they can keep up this form for the rest of the season. Still think that something from above will derail us, but it's fun none the less. I know it's very early in the season, and likely to change tonight, however a top 3 of Cas, Hull and Salford makes a pleasant change from the usual suspects.

How nice is it too see us doing this good. I have too say I thought there was definitely more than 3600 there, I'd of said 5000. I think if the crowds don't start increasing soon we'll see Marwan getting more frustrated and it could end up rubbing off on the players and effect our season. The move too this new stadium killed the fan base really. If Marwan came in when we was still at the Willows I honestly think he could of got us some decent crowds.

Well done Salford. Wigan's win at the AJ Bell in Round 1 is looking better with every passing week, especially as we have now hit the skids.

Our game with Leeds last night was another frustrating one. Injuries aside the players we have got should be doing better; poor decisions with ball in hand and patchy defending are costing us points at the moment. The game got bad tempered at times, and Ferres' crusher tackle on Gildart was as poor as they come, but if I'm honest there was niggle from players from both sides (Ablett and Joel 'penalty machine' Tomkins in the thick of it as per) and the silliness didn't help.

We'll get men back and I'm sure Wane will get us up for the business end of the season, but at present the great effort we're showing is being matched neither by skill nor composure.

Cas tonight, and a similar story to last week. Clueless with ball in hand in the opposition 20 and patchy in defence (mostly good actually, but some terrible efforts resulting in Cas tries). We were well beaten in the forwards by the better team and our reserve backline had few answers. Cas won without needing to reach third gear, they will get better and Wigan will need also to massively improve on the showings of the past few weeks if they're to feature in the play-offs (which I think they can and will).

Wow, what a run my team Salford are on. The first time we've beat Hull away in the league an we score 10 tries! 100 points in our last two away games. This is just ridiculous, I can't believe what my club is capable of after all these years of disappointment!

@Maccaa i miss the willows It's Just a Proper traditional rugby ground always produced a good atmosphere and had a laugh with Salford fans in pubs before games.

Got to be honest rhinos are doing better than I thought they would, still its very clear we're carrying too many passengers McGuire, JJB in particular but a couple of others too we need to shift them and bring in some fresh blood to challenge again

Saints part company with Cunningham, I'm guessing they'll look down under for someone to replace him, or could it be that Ian Watson is raising a few eyebrows with the way Salford are playing. It wouldn't shock me to see Watson hunted with the way he's got Salford playing, but would he leave and would Koukash allow him to leave??

I'm surprised it's taken them so long to get rid of him tbh. Saints have been pretty bad for months now

Can't see koukash letting anyone leave Salford at the moment never mind their head coach like you say they'll likely go abroad for one

Same here mate I don't like these new stadiums as much. Hardly any atmosphere in them and you're stuck in one stand. I use to love walking around the Willows before and after the match.

About Watson to Saints. I really can't see it myself hes Salford through and through and he's got us playing our best rugby ever in super league. There's more pressure in the Saints job, they're expected to finish top 4 where as anywhere in the top 8 is good for us.

Just to say, I have some trepidation that something will derail Salford at some point in the seasn. It's been the league in the past, but hopefully this year will be different, and the one thing that has been coming to mind is losing Watson. I really don't want to see it happen, but that's the next thing to spoil our season.

The Willows was unique, being able to walk around it, the smell of wintergreen eminating from the dressing rooms (in years gone by) and I even recall watching a soccer game there and watching Sir Bobby play and my uncle introducing me to him after the match and shaking his hand. The place had so many memories and a atmosphere all of it's own. Sadly by the end it was in need or a serious upgrade or the easier option to move.

BS sending off was that, never a red card at all

This game ruined now thank to Ben "Look at me" Thaler

Yeah, that was a poor decision mate. Certainly a high challenge but a yellow would easily have sufficed.

Yeah true, Wigan were the better team though can't deny that

That young kid saints had playing winger was really impressive, reminded me of Jason Robinson the way he run and his elusiveness.

George Williams signs a new deal
Great news for Wigan and SL in general - as no doubt NRL sides would be looking at him, and great news for Wigan to tie him down as there were rumours Warrington were keen over the winter

Yes glad about this. He needs to knuckle down and continue to improve, and now his contract situation is sorted he can do just that. I expect him to try his luck in the NRL soon but at least he can do his best for Wigan beforehand.

As for today's game I'm of course happy to beat Saints but most of all I'm relieved that we've ended our poor run of results and didn't get our pants pulled down by 12 men. The sending off was very harsh and if I'm honest I could see a different result had they had the full 13 on the park.

Our attack was once again poor despite scoring a few points. There was far too much one-up rugby from us, with only Williams looking like he had a clue how to break down a depleted defence. Yes we still have a few men out/returning from injury but our excuses as to why we huff and puff so much in the opposition 20 are running out.

We put a few tries on them in the second half when they looked out on their feet, but again we seemed to let them back in. Although I never felt worried we'd lose I was concerned at how desperate we looked defending with an extra man. To be fair to Saints they played some of the best stuff I've seen from them for ages, sacking Cunningham has clearly unshackled them and the young lad Regan Grace (who couldn't get a game under Cunningham ahead of Jack Owens) looked very exciting.

I know I look a right moaning twat after a good win on Good Friday but I know we can do so much more than we're showing just now.

Wigan have had an exceedingly painful couple of weeks: dismal against Castleford and, though we showed a little heart in the second half, the game was out of our hands by half time through some poor attack and laughable defending. Yes we have men missing but barring a few rabbit-in-headlights moments the kids have stood up, it's senior players like Joel Tomkins, Willie Isa and our pack that aren't leading by example.

On the plus side I'm happy for Salford (their fans sing a lot of similar songs to United so it was nice to hear them even from the opposition), I'm going to the Swinton game at Heywood Road and we're still relatively in the mix near the top.
