The relative strength of the Premier League

The same Mourinho who said La Liga is the best league in the world yet you still ignore it.

'I didn't enjoy it because I won a title with a record in Spain with 100 points and 121 goals, but we played only three or four matches all season. I lost a title with 92 points, but again we played only four or five matches in the season."

My personal opinion is that the [Premier League] is so hard. Every team fights until the 90th minute. Over the course of 38 games, that takes a lot out of the English teams. If we play a lesser team here, if it’s 4-0 at half-time, in the second half you don’t have to really graft. At the end of the season we definitely feel fresher.

I'm sure you appreciate his agenda there. He's obviously miffed at not being as successful as he'd like to have been in Madrid. But the key part is he makes those comments right after getting pumped by West Brom.

"In the Premier League you never really know what is going to happen," Suarez told the Daily Mail. "There is very little between the teams. Here, three or four teams aside, there is a difference with the smaller teams.

"I don’t mean this to sound disrespectful but there are some games where you look at the press and they are asking: ‘Let’s see how many goals Barcelona are going to score today?’ In the Premier League, you never know what is going to happen and that is something I miss.

LA LIGA IS THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD- JOSE MOURINHO
"The league is very, very strong," he said of Spain. "A beautiful league, because the teams are very technical, and that's the reason I'm in Spain, because I want to be where the best league is."

Mourinho: Winning La Liga harder than any other league
"I have previously won titles in Portugal, England and Italy, but this one in Spain is the hardest title so far. And I have even won titles on the last matchday in the past. They didn't give us any presents," Mourinho stated to Real Madrid TV.

Mourinho: Any club in the world would finish behind Barcelona & Real Madrid in La Liga

"What I used to say is that every club in the world goes to the Spanish league would finish third," Mourinho told ESPN.

"Man City goes there, Manchester United goes there, Chelsea goes there. Who else? They finish third because the two best teams in the world are in the same league, so of course to the others, it is a big difference."

Yeah around the time the prem started to get more money and get stronger he started saying that. He's since obviously changed his mind.

Jose changes his opinions based on how it suits him and what makes him look good.

August 2012 after winning the league and things being rosey

Calling Real Madrid and Barcelona "the two best teams in the world," Mourinho said La Liga was now better than England's Premier League — where he led Chelsea to consecutive league titles in 2005 and 2006.

"The league is very, very strong," he said of Spain. "A beautiful league, because the teams are very technical, and that's the reason I'm in Spain, because I want to be where the best league is."

December 2015 after he left Spain a hated man who came back "home" to the PL

Despite Bale's proclamations that he is playing for the best club and within the best league in the world, Mourinho thinks the overwhelming domination of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid weaken Spanish football.

"[Bale said that] because he's there," the former Inter and Porto coach, whose Blues are currently top of the Premier League, told BT Sport. "You have to accept what Gareth says, but I was also there.

"I won La Liga, I lost La Liga, but I [also] won La Liga, and I know clearly the differences between La Liga and the Premier League.

"To go to matches knowing that you are going to win for sure is not the best thing. In Spain everybody knows that two teams are top of the world. A third team like Atletico is doing wonderfully well and they won last year, which is not normal.

"But after that there is a huge competitive difference and that's why the record is 100 points, 126 goals. In England, 100 points and 126 goals is impossible. If someone reaches 100 points and scores 126 goals, it's not the best competition for sure, they can be the best team, but not the best competition."

Of course it is true that the gap in La Liga between the best and the rest is bigger. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the rest is worse in La Liga, rather that the top of the league is better.

The second one is funny. When he's won he says "they didn't us any presents" which is exactly the opposite of what he says later.

"Generally, I think the intensity in the league is higher and nowadays you see there are many clubs who can compete on a high level, due to the fact they also have more possibilities to sign players," Hiddink told the club's website.

"Nowadays, you see teams halfway or over halfway up the league, which in the past you would normally not expect to be there, like Crystal Palace, Watford and Leicester."

Hiddink

"These were teams normally nearer the bottom or the second tier, but they are doing very well. Because they have made good signings, everyone now is capable of beating everyone else and you can see that in the results

"
The Premier League is the best football competition. It has the most interest for fans and most revenues.

'They are doing things good and keeping teams in the competition where everyone being equal is of interest for everybody.
'We have different budgets in Spain and it would be difficult for someone like Leicester to be top of the league,' Bartomeu added, referring to a set-up where Barca and Real Madrid take nearly half of the TV cash between them.

The club president is worried more of Spain's best talent could be lured to England by the new riches on offer but said Barca's players were attracted by more than just money.

'Our rivals are the Premier League, they are the big adversaries. We have to do our best to increase our revenues and our financial situation to make the talent of our teams stay with us,' he said.

Klopp, PL manager, on which is the best league in the world

Jurgen Klopp has hailed La Liga as the best domestic competition in world football ahead of Liverpool's Europa League final against two-time defending champions Sevilla in Basle.

Spanish sides have dominated European competition in recent years, with Sevilla's success mirrored by Real Madrid and Barcelona winning the Champions League in 2014 and 2015 respectively. This year's final will be contested by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Klopp told a news conference: "It's the best football country I would say, a combination of good managers, scouting, good education of players.

"Lots of young players from South America like to go to Spain because they can settle in. There are a lot of reasons, but at this moment La Liga is the highest level and it is the job of everybody else to reach this level and pass them.

"Germany were the last world champions, then Spain [before them], so things can change!

"Spain's status is deserved, but hopefully on Wednesday nobody will see it."

Sevilla could only manage a seventh-placed finish in La Liga but Klopp remains wary of Unai Emery's men.

Asked if Liverpool need to pay particular attention to one of Sevilla's players, he replied: "I really don't like to put my finger on these players. It depends where we show weaknesses. They can only be as strong as we let them be.

"The target is that nobody talks too much about Sevilla's decisive players, they talk about ours.

"I have big respect for the whole Sevilla squad. Both teams have taken this tournament seriously."

Klopp will have his side well drilled to thwart Sevilla's bid to become the first side to win the Europa League or the UEFA Cup, as it was formerly known, three times in succession.

"Organisation [is the most important thing]," he said. "To be prepared for moments to play the last pass.

"If you are a neutral viewer, then it is easy to enjoy watching two teams on the highest level.

"In a final, you need to be ready to make mistakes when the whole world is watching. Football doesn't work without mistakes. It's about finding the next solution.

"It's concentration, using your skills on the highest level."

Pretty much yes.

When people like Gareth Bale and Jose Mouronho are saying the same thing people still put their hands in their ears and ignore it.

lol

Mourinho is just evil and vain hypocrite who says whatever suits his case at that moment. It's insulting to use his words to back up your view.

We will see what happens, but I cannot be interested in this now like everyone else is. He will enjoy the league because it is a great league and a real competition.

‘Pep is a real competitor. That is what he wants. I don’t think that it will be the same situation as he had in Spain, with Barcelona on the top level, or in Germany with Bayern on the top level, but of course Manchester City has good possibilities. We will try to beat them.’

Sorry, but surely you realise that he's talking about how City aren't as good a side as Barca & Bayern as opposed to the PL > those leagues?

Wilson's excellent article on the Premier League becoming better.
He spends half the article establishing the fact that the big English clubs all suck at the moment. Isn't that something you constantly argue against?

I especially love the part about Arsenal:
Arsenal are still Arsenal, Arsenalling along with their heroic wins and their foolish defeats, accumulating an entirely Arsenal-like number of points.

Yeah so like everyone he thinks that Pep will face a harder time at City given it's City and he wont be in as dominant a position as at Bayern and Barca.

But according to Klopp, a PL manager, La Liga is the best league in the world and everyone else is catching up.

Yep. The author seems to be a bit unsure while ensuring he covers both angles as well as a middle ground.

Which is fair enough.

What I absolutely abhor are those who come into this thread who are acting like I'm an idiot for thinking the opposite view. People like you and Balu make good points that I can understand. Others who are like "he must be wumming" can just do one.

The problem with the PL is they have the money but they spend in mediocre PL players from other English teams for insane amounts of money just because they play in the PL, in Spain they get players from south america and Portugal and some are good and some aren't and today a football club is a business and businesses need to risk a bit to have success.

Well you only get in the competition in the first place for doing poorly in the league! You'll be hard to find a large club who've been in the Europa League three years in a row.
How often are Liverpool (who have a better team) in the late stages of the champions league? they either don't qualify or fail to make it out of an easy group, then into Europa!

Is it a problem? I'd argue that the money being sunk into the English game creates a better quality league with multiple clubs managing to spring upsets.

It may change how English clubs do in the CL (As Mourinho and Bale have alluded to in their interviews) but it creates a compelling league that continues to grow and attract viewers.

EDIT: There was much talk in German papers about players being poached into the Premier League this last summer. I think their league is one that certainly needs to worry more.
This is the argument though. is it a better quality league? Where is the evident quality of the rest of the league and how do they demonstrate it? Sevilla represent the remainder of the Spanish League and they always win European competition. You are only using premierleague performance as evidence that all the teams have quality which is highly flawed. firstly, when you play someone every season you learn how to beat them. secondly, we don't have 3 teams of the level of Real, Barca and Atletico so it is impossible to claim (legitimately) that our teams represent "better quality."

See newcastle. Shelvey cost nearly 30 mill and they are crap. John Stones is valued over 40 mill. Buying from the premier league, you'll get your pants pulled down!

The difference in the quality of the leagues has never been more apparent than at the moment. That Bundesliga result is a disgrace.

Top dog beats relegation candidate 6-0 at home, what a disgrace. Better to watch West Ham-Astra. Some Quality over there.

You missed the West Ham result yesterday? That's more embarassing for PL than Bayern trashing even better teams than Werder.

Does it matter about the relevant quality in the various leagues. All that is relevant, is whatever the quality of the Premiership, that is the one that everyone wants to watch worldwide. No one cares about the Bundesliga, or whether Bayern are thrashing some side or other in it. Make it more competitive, then perhaps people will watch it.

This wretched thread again. Cue the schadenfraude when all 4 EPL teams crash out of the CL by the end of the first KO round
Now you've said that, Leicester will probably squeeze past Lyon and Benfica or something to make the Semi-Finals while being 7th in the league, and this thread will rear its head once more

Strongest team PL is second best in the world alongside Bundesliga (third best in the past 3 years)
Second placed team PL is second best to La Liga
3-20 PL is the best league in the world.
10-20 PL is the best league in the world by a huge huge margin.

Instead of quoting some people like Mourinho, Klopp, Bale etc who mostly have an agenda, you should just watch different games of different leagues. Since there is no real comparison between the teams from the different leagues apart from the 4 best respective teams (no, EL doesn't count), the only way to determine how good the leagues are is to
- watch league games
- analyze individual class of footballers at teams, however this can be clouded a little by form high/dips and team form.

Most people who are claiming about great great La Liga have never watched any games of this league with not one of the big 3 participating.
It's really bad to watch mostly, and even if it's popular to claim otherwise, the technique of ~12 teams of this league is pretty awful, more comparable to championship teams. I'd even say the second half of the table, La Liga is only 4th best league in Europe/World.

The difference in the quality of the leagues has never been more apparent than at the moment. That Bundesliga result is a disgrace.
Indeed. As much as I was hoping and expecting Bremen to win the league this season, I think that this result makes that impossible.
