Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Nilsson's pre-historic film spree reminds me, @Archie Leach when was the last time you saw Mean Streets? Christ, was that a soul destroying experience. Holy shit was that bad.

Remind me to not listen to you film snobs again!
Probably two years ago. I really love Scorsese’s first ten years, pretty cold on everything from Goodfellas on.

Also I don’t think Scorsese is really a snobs director. He’s the biggest broseph after Nolan.

Yeah Scorsese is definitely not a snob. I mean it's not Jodorowsky or Malick by any means.

The only people who feel passionately about Jodorowsky/Malick are sassy letterboxd reviewers who have listed Drive, Only God Forgives, Her and Inglourious Basterds as their four favourite films.

The Adjustment Bureau

The affair between a politician and a contemporary dancer is affected by mysterious forces keeping the lovers apart.
Matt Damn and Emily Blunt, were very good in this romance/sci-fi.
Was not really expecting much , but I really enjoyed it , worth 100 mins of your time.

7.5/10

I’m watching Allied at the moment and it’s so so bad. Why would you CGI sand dunes?

At this point if you see a films directed by Robert Zemekis and keep watching, you only have yourself to blame.
Also having Brad Pitt in a serious role tends to be bad. He's been coasting on his looks his entire career. "Charming" in Snatch and good in Twelve Monkeys but that's about it.

Ninja Assassin
A young ninja turns his back on the orphanage that raised him, leading to a confrontation with a fellow ninja from the clan. A film about ninjas, where the protagonist wields a chain with blades attached either end should be a lot more fun. There are some really well shot scenes mixed among other scenes that are way too heavily edited. Felt jarring. Could have been so much better 4.5/10

Black Panther was so goddamn bland that I almost felt like running over to my spice rack in order to sprinkle salt and spices in my ears and eyes just to give them some seasoning. I still liked it better than Roma though.

The Pianist

A Polish Jewish musician struggles to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto of World War II.
WOW this was a hard film to watch , brutal at time , very brutal, pulled no punches about how brutal the German were in Warsaw.
Better than Schindler's List, yes I think it was, this must watch on anybody must watch list.

Bohemian Rhapsody

The story of Queen / Freddie's life from Smile to the show stealing performance at Live Aid.
The casting was fantastic, you would have thought you was watching the actual group, even Kenny Everett was bang on, Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury is phenomenal.
Watching the Live performance was outstanding, totally stole the show .

Nearly 5 hours watching 2 outstanding films, both get perfect scores.

10/10

The departed was pretty great. Didn't you like that much?

3 billboards, funnier than Expected and a very very good film. Didn’t know anything about it before I saw it so wasn’t expecting what I got. 8/10

Bohemian Rhapsody - some of these scores for this film on here are laughable. Don't get me wrong, decent flick but at times I thought I was watching a made for TV movie. The concert footage at the end was poorly done IMHO. Nowhere near a best picture. 6/10.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? Usually this type of thing wouldn't be my kind of film. Biopics tend to irritate me because they either fall in love with the famous person whose story they're telling (which immediately ends up at odds with any "analysis" of them as a flawed person) or they spend the whole time signposting. This managed to mostly avoid doing both of those things. It keeps Lee Israel at the centre of the story but it keeps on ensuring that she's a flawed person living too much in her own universe - she's essentially someone who's willing to lie to people who care about her to carry on her schemes and the film never lets you forget that. Richard E. Grant is a delight to watch and Melissa McCarthy keeps the film upright. It can't help but fall in love with her on occasion and it never fully commits to being a proper analysis of a criminal, and this is just a personal thing but I wish it'd been a little more stylish on a visual/editing front, but I liked this a fair bit. 7.5

The House With A Clock In Its Walls
A young orphan named Lewis Barnavelt aids his magical uncle in locating a clock with the power to bring about the end of the world. Was intrigued to see how Eli Roth would tackle a children's horror. Was pretty boring. The story and characters were very plain and the acting was abysmal. Had some good moments but was a very boring movie, even for kids. It did look nice though 4/10

Bumblebee

On the run in the year of 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. The best Transformer film since the first one, but that's not saying too much. There were some genuinely laugh out loud moments, the action was fun without being too hectic and the main human character wasn't as one dimensional as you'd expect with this franchise. Having said that, the action scenes were few and far between, and at the end of the day, a film like this is mainly about the popcorn action 6/10

Vice

The story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today. Christian Bale and Amy Adams were phenomenal in this and it lets people with little interest/knowledge of politics like myself understand some of what went on in that world during a span of years. This was like The Big Short, but not as good. Maybe Americans would find it more interesting 6.5/10

I find vice boring and bland. Good acting but boring. There's no tension and no climax whatsoever. At least with american hustle we got to see amy adams cleavage

Green Book. Oh dear, no, absolutely not. The kind of well-intentioned and superficially charming "no to racism" film that white liberals create (and go to see) so they can pat themselves on the back about how liberal they are. Another review I saw of this film compared it to Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney's 'Ebony & Ivory' and I couldn't think of a more apt comparison. Mortensen and Ali are both solid in the lead roles but the film they're part of is uncomfortable, self-serving, misguided and ultimately quite insidious. All this film preaches is that racism should only be combated through non-violent means and there's a scene towards the end with a friendly police officer that feels like it was added in afterwards by the Blue Lives Matter group. A mistake. 3.5

:(

After seeing the cast I was looking forward to seeing this but the reviews have put me right off.

Go and see it. Don't take my word for it. Even if you end up hating it for the same reasons I did, they'll be your opinions. :)

Tower - documentary/re-enactment of Charles Whitman's 1966 University of Texas massacre. Plays out in roughly real time, following a group of the survivors and their real testimonies from the day. Uses rotoscope technology to animate the actors, giving it a far more vivid and surreal atmosphere. It's a terrific documentary and hard not to get a lump in the throat in the final act. The cop who killed Whitman was called Houston McCoy, which is awesome.

Velvet Buzzsaw - Dan Gilroy's new Netflix film is two movies in one. A The Player-esque satire of the art world morphs into a by the numbers horror film, but the first half is hilarious (low hanging fruit that it is) and the second half is full of enough satisfying death to get by. It's not a great film but I enjoyed it. I like that Gyllenhaal has gone a bit nuts in his mid-career.

How To Train Your Dragon : Hidden World - A not so befitting end to a masterpiece of a franchise. Overall the plot was okay but could've been better. Plot holes regarding its villains motivation and plans made it a sour taste for its bittersweet ending. I still love this franchise though, sad to see its finally came to an end. The film however contain lots of beautiful imagery as expected from this franchise, and that should be enough motivation for anyone to pay for the Imax tickets. 7/10.
