Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

May December
Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past. Intriguing story and decent performances but the film has a TV feel to it. The way it was shot, the score etc. It was really off-putting. It's not anything I'll remember in a week or so 4/10

Rashomon

Classic movie that introduced non-linear storytelling to a mainstream audience, so massive plaudits for that. Also though the story was interesting enough to keep you hooked and the cinematography for that time was really good. But some things were laughable and spoilt the movie. The silly fighting, the emotional 1-100 swings etc. But regardless, a classic film adn you can see why 7.5/10

Heretic:
Great start and quite an intriguing premise but around midway through it began to become generic and fell flat. In the end,. I wasn't really sure what type of movie it was, psychological or horror?

Conclave:
Decent story, but the reveal was a bit nonsensical tbh. Some nice cinematography in parts. Probably one to watch on TV rather than spend money on it in the cinema.

Just saw Eggers Nosferatu, absolutely fantastic. One of the best Horrors for me.

Yup, come back from this too. Bloody brilliant. Visually stunning, with some fantastic camera work playing with the audience. Throw in the sound design, goddamn.

Don't normally watch films in the cinema, but very happy I did with this one.

Both beautiful and brilliant.
It's an absolute masterpiece. One of my favourites of recent years.

I went in to this not expecting a good film, it was pretty much dumb teens do dumb things after drinking and some die.
I liked the way it was filmed the music was creepy and scary.
The first part was good , the middle part was dumb and the ending was dreadful.

3.5/10

Abigail

After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they're locked inside with no normal little girl.
Started excellent and carried on that way I thought, till you found out why and then it dropped in quality, but TBH not by much.
Yeah the ending could've been better.
This is an entertaining horror movie with comedic elements sprinkled throughout it and everyone in the cast does a pretty good job, plenty of blood and gore.
Yeah I enjoyed it on the whole.

Lovely, Dark and Deep

Lennon, a new back-country ranger, travels alone through the dangerous wilderness, hoping to uncover the origins of a tragedy that has haunted her since she was a child.
Stunning scenery , music was perfect and I thought the acting was very good.
The film itself was interesting and TBH really enjoyed it,

Last Night in Soho. Edgar Wright's 2021 psychological horror (thriller?) film, about a young woman from Cornwall (Thomasin McKenzie) that comes to London to study fashion, and starts dreaming (literally) of herself as a women coming to London in the 1960s (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) for a stage career - but the career goes bad while the dreams turn into scary visions.

I really liked it. As always with Wright, the cinematography, editing, and soundtrack are amazing: there is so much to experience in that regard. I have seen various reviews talking about how the film doesn't live up to its promise when the direction of its story becomes clear, but I don't agree - I like how it plays out and how everything comes together in the end. I just think the middle section of the film is a little too long: at some point, I got the idea of how things are playing out in the 1960s and current-day segments, and I was impatient to see the next narrative development. But that didn't take too long.

I was a bit disappointed with Baby Driver, which I felt was too much 'style over substance', but I felt everything came together really nicely in this one. 8/10

Misson: Cross. A 2024 South Korean action comedy. A police detective is investigating a case with her team, when they discover her husband is hanging out with an unknown woman, and so start spying on him as well - but he is actually himself working on another side of the same case - which lead to amusing complications and a bunch of good action scenes. The film is a bit confusing and convoluted (although I admit that this might also be because I had trouble remembering the names of the main characters), but it's a fun ride. And at 1:45h, it's pretty briskly paced as well. 6/10

The Accursed

Elly is asked by a family friend to look after an elderly woman living in a remote cabin for a few days. She agrees, but soon discovers there is a demon hiding in the woman just waiting to break free.
The opening was decent and promised a decent film, but sadly that never arrived, the first 5 mins was the best the film could muster.

2/10

We Live in Time - 8/10. Really enjoyed this film. Made me laugh at times, made me connect with the story and characters throughout. Pugh and Garfield are both great.

Fantastic film. The plot, the acting, the use of angles, light, weather. All time great film.

Watched Juror 2 yesterday and I could see some slight similarities- not sure if they intended it, but whatever, didn’t feel as natural as 12 Angry Men.
Love it.

Can't believe it took me so long to get round to watching it. A gem

Since I spent most of the holidays sick I got to see a nice variety of films. In the order I watched them:

Blade Runner 2049
This was my favorite out of all the films I watched. Beautifully shot and actually better than than the first film (yeah, I said it).

The Last of the Mohicans
Fairly high cheese factor, but I enjoyed it. The soundtrack is pretty sick too!

Nope
Is Jordan Peele getting progressively worse as a director? Not a fan... Give us more films like Get Out!

Under the Shadow
Iranian horror film (it's on Netflix). Pretty good, although I enjoyed the setting and backstory far more than the horror elements.

The Lady from Shanghai
90 minutes of Orson Welles' terrible attempt at an Irish accent and Rita Hayworth looking hot. You can skip this.

Just saw Nosferatu. First act was properly great - atmospheric and suspenseful with incredible cinematography (wow). From there it gradually loses it's groove for me and by the end I don't really care that much. The story just doesn't interest me that much. Some good acting in here though, even though Bill's delivery sort of was grating to me. Feels difficult to grade it as I liked the first bit so much, but somewhere between a strong 6 and a weak 7 for me.

This debate has been had multiple times, but I liked this much better than Get Out. Get Out is well done, but once the plot has been revealed, all puzzle pieces neatly fit and there's nothing left to think about. Nope is much more open-ended and leaves more room for reflection. Just not as straightforward. It's also visually much more appealing, I thought.

The Game (1997)

Good atmosphere throughout the movie and Michael Douglas is a smooth actor, but the story was rather silly.

Can't believe Scandi Red is trying to reignite the Peele Wars. There were bodies everywhere after the last battle.

Rather silly? I think you need an award for understatement. :)
If Fincher had swapped out whatever the ending was with just a still photo of his ass, not only would his message to his audience come through more clearly, but also it would have been more interesting.

Last of the Mohicans has one of the best soundtrack ever.

It really elevated the film, that's for sure. Would have been rather forgettable without it.

I don't mind open-ended films that are chock-full of symbolism, but for some reason Nope just bored me to tears. And that is despite liking most of the actors and finding the setting/backstory intriguing.

What have I done?! "The Peele Wars" sounds terrifying.
