Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I wouldn't be surprised if the entire film was around that mark. I thought it was pretty terrible. Kind of pretty in parts and the sound was 10/10. But it felt like an exercise in movie making rather than telling a story. Something made for film students to pick apart over 20 viewings rather than something as crass as enjoyment
find it boring etc. is just personal preference, but it's a visual medium, the point is to tell a story visually and the number of lines is neither here nor there

It wouldn't be my first criticism and yeah, its not necessary ... its not an entirely visual medium though. One of the few parts of the film i really liked was the sound. And yeah, im a fan of dialogue and characters I guess, so i didn't enjoy it. The way the story was ordered and the weird time lines and crap ending all annoyed me a lot more.

You didn't like the ending? I thought that was one of the most moving parts. :(

I hated the ending. It was the final nail in the coffin for me really. It went from being kind of boring to a load of arse with that end.

It was incredible at the cinema. Atmosphere and sound was awesome.
This. I remember walking out of the cinema thinking, man that Hans Zimmer guy is something else, he deserves an Oscar nod for this
The movie on its own was meh

Watching Dunkirk. Anyone else think it was a bit crap? Where’s the substance?

Hugely disappointing. It even totally mishandled the nature of the small boat rescue. Many boats went backwards and forwards many times.

I tried watching this last night and the camerawork and attempts at being different for differents sake was really irritating. I haven’t decided whether to go back and finish it or not.

I hated it. Such a decline after the 6th sense.

Would love them to remake dunkirk and made it like saving private ryan. You know the part where they show actual war completes with bangs and galore.

There's alot happening at the same time with the french line holding the german.

Cinema has moved along way from making a war movie, too much focus on the sensibility and individual approach. I'd love it if for once we got back to the 90s where war movies delivers what they promised. A war

McQueen - I saw the seminal McQueen exhibition at the Met in 2011 but otherwise had no real touchpoint. This is a by the numbers doc with a great subject and McQueen is an inherently fascinating figure, and a genius in his own right.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post -
handsome but gutless indie fare, dealing with homosexual re-education. Dodged the hard questions and will cushion those looking for pro-LGBT validation. Gorgeous photography and solid acting abound.

I did expect more, but the cinematography was pretty good. Showing the movie from 3 different points of view was very interesting.

Not much in terms of dialogue though.

My cousin Vinny

watched it again after maybe 25 years. Still brilliant to watch, and funny. Joe Pesci is great.

Clapton : A Life in 12 Bars 10/10

Now my favourite ever doco. Simply brilliant. Musically perfect. Well timed at a solid two hours. Starts way back in his childhood which I had no knowledge of. Then romps through his early years through every band. No punches pulled.

First half is more musical. Second half is more the human side. Final 30 minutes just kicks you in the dick and crushes your soul. Final 90 seconds or so makes it all ok.

The man has lived many lives.

Quote: "Getting off heroin was hard. But nobody knew about alcohol back then. That was worse. It got to the point I was suicidal. The only reason I didn't kill myself was the knowledge that if I did, I wouldn't be able to drink tomorrow"

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Weird and fecked up and a bit all over the place structurally, but sort of works since the book is largely the same. Does well as a faithful adaptation and Depp is absolutely brilliant.

Baby's Day Out (1994) : Rewatched the movie today after many years
Probably the very first movie I watched or the one I remember watching and it brought back so many memories.
Was afraid it was going to be not as great as I remembered it to be, but it was fun and has aged well IMO
I guess most on here have already seen it, but if you haven't, it's worth a watch
Also surprised by how low it is rated on IMdB and Metacritic, maybe I'm biased because of the sentimental value attached to it

Are you 1990ish born? One of my first movie memories too.

Yeah it was a decent movie, slapstick fun, better than a 6. Probably hard to enjoy as an adult but it'd be a good movie to watch with young kids.

The Charnel House
A long abandoned slaughterhouse is transformed into modern lofts in a re-gentrified urban neighborhood. Soon after tenants move in they are tormented by a dark secret that has been trapped in the building for over 30 years. Pretty boring, flat "horror" movie with nothing new to add and not scary at all. The only things I liked are the presence of The Candy Man and one kitchen death was quite cool. Don't bother 2/10

Ingrid Goes West

An unhinged social media stalker moves to LA and insinuates herself into the life of an Instagram star. The movie was so cringing, I had to literally watch through my fingers, squinting half the time. It's great. Felt very realistic too. The ending could have been better and felt like it had some studio interference there but overall, it had great performances and very short run time, which ensured it was paced very well 8/10

I like it for the most part(There was way to many nerd references for me)but I agree that the ending felt completely out of place.

I actually really enjoyed it, the visual experience of it/sound etc. Watched in the cinema which 100% made a difference, I would probably pass on watching it at home on a Saturday night.

I think you are right in a sense, it's completely different to most WW2 movies. In my opinion if you want a story there are dozens of brilliant films to choose from as it has been done to death. Dunkirk is a raw view of what was going on.

Frailty
A man confesses to an FBI agent his family's story of how his religious fanatic father's visions led to a series of murders to destroy supposed "demons." Haven't seen this one in a while but still enjoyed it. Just a really good story and some great performances. Still feel the end could been better but this is one of Matthew McConaughey's most underrated films 7.5/10

Ready Player One

Decent movie aimed at kids and nerds. Nothing of critical value except for CGI. Meh story, plot and bad screenplay.

6/10, worth a single free watch.

I've watched it perhaps 10 times (though only twice fully). It's so much goddamn fun. If my local cinema ever put it on I'd give it a watch on the big screen too. It was everything that type of movie should be.

It is. Overall timepass movie though I found the below a bit jarring

His aunt is killed and suddenly he's romancing the girl next scene?

Did you see Valerian and City of Thousand Planets?

It was a little on the nose. But by that same token, I'll take that over an extra 5-15 minutes of monologues about getting revenge.

Haven't seen Valerian yet. I'm told it's all over the show. I'm not really too big on fantasy.

Ready Player One is an absolutely believable world in that it's only a jump in tech away from how the world looks right now.

Turned Ready Player One off when I realized nearly the whole thing is animated, couldn't get into it at all.

I watched Deadpool 2 the super duper cut and thought it was a really good film. The storytelling is there, the characters fresh and fleshed out and the humour spot on. The first act does meander a little but it really kicks up a gear once the gang is being put together. The action is exciting and inventive. Some of the cgi is still a little ropey here and there (why does it feel like we're going backwards with this) but crucially - and unlike the marvel movies - the choreography feels creative and purposeful.

I thought Domino was one of the best superheros to have appeared on screen, I loved the actor and the whole character design and she fits perfectly into this world as a meta-commentary on plotting and story predestination.

The jokes have a high hit rate and the characters have depth, allowing it to work both as a solid superhero movie and as a solid comedy spoof of the genre. Most importantly of all I got the feeling that the filmmakers actually cared about the film rather than acting like they were building a giant ugly slot machine that impotently flashes, bangs and bleeps; designed solely and soullessly to suck in as much money as possible. In other words it feels like a film apart from the Marvel and co superhero genre cesspit that is responsible for so much processed movie slop.

The slowish start aside I think it's even better than the first. Also I love that it's references tend to be slightly left field (Enya, Say Anything, Yentl, Frozen, Robocop, cool runnings), lazier writing could have easily turned it into some wanky aint I cool/smart/edgy Rick and Morty style shit.

City Island 8/10
Starring Andy Garcia, Juliana Margulies and a young Erza Miller. An argumentative working class family drama set in city island in the Bronx. Despite that summary its quite an uplifting film set in a interesting location with a positive, but complex resolution. The acting from the leads and support cast is excellent with a natural and believable feel to it. I really enjoyed Andy Garcia's character.

Like Father
A workaholic woman who is left at the altar takes her honeymoon trip anyway with her overachieving father who left her mother because he believed his family was holding back his career. I pretty much enjoyed this. Slightly in love with Kristen Bell so that helps. The characters felt quite real and was slightly emotional at the end. A fun movie that makes me want to go on a cruise ship right away 7/10

Deadpool 2 > Deadpool

More sci fi than fantasy. Absolute pish nonetheless.
