Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Upgrade 2018 : B-Movie done right. Gory with good action and actually a pretty good story. Reminded me of Ex Machina at times.
The acting may not be great but it's very entertaining - 7/10

Can't fecking wait to see it. Got it on DL now

Anyone seen the movie The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)?
The reviews seem good, was wondering if it's worth the watch

Fracture 8/10

Thoroughly enjoyable albeit it a ridiculously slow pace. Ol' sad eyes is pretty great in it. Solidly rounded out character with easily identifiable motivations.

No idea what Hopkins was going for with that accent though. At varying times it was Irish, Canadian, English and I assume, American.

Just watched this too. Loved it. 8/10 for me. Action alone is worth it but plot caught me out towards the end.

Just finished upgrade myself. "B movie done right" sums it perfectly. Kinda of reminded me a little of the straight to video action movies with a gimmick of the early 90s. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cold War - Pawel Pawlikowski's followup to the brilliant Ida. A love story told over fifteen years in post-war Warsaw and Paris, coming in at a lean 84 minutes, as beautifully shot as Ida was, and perhaps even more affecting. I loved this film, my favourite of the year so far. Tomasz Kot is a cool motherfecker.

First Reformed -
Paul Schrader takes a break from directing direct-to-video Nic Cage action/thrillers to return to his roots, a dark and angry film about a repressed priest losing his mind over the environment. Ethan gives a typically great performance. This one goes off the rails a couple of times and I'm not entirely sure about its conclusions but its supremely crafted and entertaining.

It was nice enough but kind of dull. They did the period stuff well but the 'mystery' just wasn't that compelling.

Watched this the other night, was pleasantly surprised for the reasons you state above. Solid 7/10

A prayer before dawn (2017)

A british young man goes to train muay thai to Thailand, and eventually ends up in prison, where he has to fight for his life. (based on a true story)

Well made movie, specially life inside a Thai prison. Thai triads are fecking scary.

7/10

Yes, it's decent and sweet. Especially if you like Lily James (Debora in Baby Driver).
Like someone said though, the mystery isn't very compelling.

American Animals : very well made and very very tense with some excellent performances.A heist movie different from any I've ever seen. Not much in terms of suspense but man the tension they build up with the background score is something else
Not your typical heist movie; Watch it for the performances and the tension - 7/10

Watched Ex Machina (thanks for the recommendations). Very good. I think Ava was aided in her scheme by the complacent assumptions we have about robots (Asimov's Three Laws, for example).

8/10

Anyone know of films similar to Ex Machina, please?
