Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Ant Man and the Wasp - lighter than air and little to recommend it besides Paul Rudd's affability. Some have praised it for not having stakes, but without the stakes you just have Marvel's boilerplates aesthetic and inoffensive jokiness. Big shrug.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - a catastrophic misfire that should kill a franchise that had no right to move beyond the original. Just terrible, in every way, and somehow worse than Jurassic World, which is no mean feat.

Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind - thorough and informative, captures Williams' manic energy with great footage and voiceover. Sad as feck, as you can imagine.

Skyscraper
This movie is exactly what you think it would be. Bombastic, over the top and not too serious. I love Dwayne Johnson so I thoroughly enjoyed it. Don't expect to find any real substance though. Oh, and it feels like this is Neve Campbell's first movie since Scream.

I read the movie totally bombed in the box office, which is rare for a Dwayne Johnson movie

Edit :
After Dwayne Johnson's latest movie, "Skyscraper," opened domestically last weekend with a very soft $24.9 million on more than 3,700 screens, the trades were quick to attribute the worst opening for The Rock in three years to overexposure of the larger-than-life superstar.

But many seemed to forget one thing: The movie hadn't opened in China yet.

In the past few years, Johnson has put extra time into ensuring that his brand is prevalent in the Middle Kingdom, and Universal/Legendary Entertainment, the backers of "Skyscraper," are now reaping the rewards.

"Skyscraper" opened in China over the weekend and was the top movie, with a $48.4 million opening. The movie became the top-earning title of the weekend worldwide, with a box-office take surpassing $86 million

This movie was bankrolled by the china, to cater for their chinese audiences doubling as marketing and image building.

The us box office is just a side bonus.

The Insider I ordered this from Netflix thinking it was that other film with George Clooney and Tilda Swinton about corporate shenanigans. This one went on far too long and had lots of confusing scenes in it where I wasn't exactly sure what was happening. Lots of eye close-ups too for some reason. In the end the story wasn't particularly compelling although the death of independent network journalism was well conveyed. Al Pacino just does Al Pacino since the early 90s and Russell Crowe seemed to be warming up for that film where he did the disturbed scientist.

Is this still a thing you can do?

Turned on Notting Hill at work the other day. It was a 15 hour shift so under the end I like to put on a movie.
I took a lot of flak for this, all male workplace. There is a guy in his sixties, a bus driver who often pops in. He came in and started mouthing off why we were watching a chick flick.

After a while the noise was gone, everyone firmly invested in the movie. Everyone liked it. I am a sucker for British romantic comedies and I believe there are a lot of you out there, too scared to step forward.

I remember my uncle told me that he had a period when he used to put this movie on every night before he went to bed.

A fine movie, I won't be told otherwise. 8/10.

Still/Born
Mary, a new mother, gives birth to twins, but only one of them is alive. While taking care of her living child, Adam, she suspects that something, a supernatural entity, has chosen him and will stop at nothing to take him from her. Not too bad, starts off quite well but soon falls into the tired genre tropes. Quite forgettable 5/10

Ruin Me

Alexandra reluctantly tags along for Slasher Sleepout, an extreme event that is part camping trip, part haunted house, and part escape room. But when the fun turns deadly, Alex has to play the game if she wants to make it out alive. Started off with random jump scare moments that made me think it's going to be a long 90 minutes but once it got going, I really enjoyed it. Quite light-hearted and has a bunch of twists, some that really worked. Self aware movie, in the vein of Scream. Worth a watch 7.5/10

Camera Obscura

A veteran war photographer with PTSD sees imminent deaths in his developed photos, questioning his already fragile sanity and putting the lives of those he loves in danger. I thought the premise was interesting enough but the film quickly descends into horror cliche land. Boring 3/10

Gattaca

A genetically inferior man assumes the identity of a superior one in order to pursue his lifelong dream of space travel. Decent sci-fi movie, alway enjoy watching Ethan Hawke 6.5/10

I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore

When a depressed woman is burglarized, she finds a new sense of purpose by tracking down the thieves alongside her obnoxious neighbor. But they soon find themselves dangerously out of their depth against a pack of degenerate criminals. Directed by the Macon Blair, who stars in Blue Ruin and Green Room, and this film has a similar feel to those. Starts really well but the pacing felt off after a while. Not bad effort though and worth a watch 6/10

The Juror

A juror in a Mafia trial is forced to convince the other jurors to vote not guilty by an obsessive mob enforcer. I quite enjoyed this. Baldwin is actually decent in it and it's one of those Sunday night films that re disposable but fun 6.5/10

Slumber

A sleep doctor tries to protect a family from a demon that feeds on people in their nightmares. Always been interested in night terrors and was wondering why there hasn't been a good horror about it. This is the closest I've seen to creating that. Quite enjoyed it and built up suspense well. The protagonist is completely incompetent though, which spoilt it a bit. Worth seeing 7/10

The Seven Year Itch

Billy Wilder at 50%. Still great though.

7/10

Gattaca is one of my favorite Sci fi movies ever. It's criminally under rated.

The Hatred
Four young women travel to their college professor's new country home for a weekend getaway, only to discover that the house has a malevolent past. Awful, awful movie. Bad acting, disastrous dialogue, awful GFX and just a bad movie all round. Had one bit that made me jump but seriously, nothing happens for the first hour except clunky exposition then goes too manic in the final act and even then, every scare is just ripped off from other movie. Thanks @pauldyson1uk for bringing this movie to my attention  Avoid at all costs 1.5/10

The Maus

Alex and Selma are a couple in love on a trip to the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Suddenly, Selma feels somebody chasing them. She clings to her Muslim amulet, "hamajlija", causing the mysterious force to emerge from the forest. Low budget but a decent movie. Had some great long takes, which added suspense to a film that already had a lot of tension built well due to the narrative. Decent performances too considering they're not super known actors. Only criticisms are that they didn't need the supernatural elements thrown in because it was tight enough without it and a few scenes lingered too long to pad out the runtime. Regardless, it was a decent watch 7/10

Glad you like it :lol::lol:
The Maus sounds like a good watch.

State Of Play
When a congressional aide is killed, a Washington D.C. journalist starts investigating the case involving the congressman, his old college friend. Firstly, what a cast: Russell Crowe, Batflek, Rachel McAdams (), Helen Mirren, Jason Bateman, Robin Wright, Jeff Daniels & Viola Davis! I had a good time with this political thriller and although you can guess the ending somewhat, it's still a fun movie 7.5/10

Nocturnal Animals or how Amy Adams should stop worrying and just go to sleep

Weird movie this. So Jake Gyllenhaal character writes a book just to spite his ex-wife? That's it? The movie felt a bit like some of Stephen King's poor writing in that he's got an interesting concept but doesn't know how to properly tie it together and finish it off. Amy Adam's character felt quite pointless throughout the movie as I found myself not caring at all about what she was doing what she did was shower and bathe and not sleep and be visibly shocked reading. Then when you start to wonder what she's doing in the movie the movie ends.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays 3 parts. The younger version of the ex-wife who doesn't matter and the two fictional book version. Somehow weirdly the book version with the weird is the whimpier one. I don't like whimpy Jake.

Michael Shannon plays Tommy Lee Jones. Kind of nails him.

Aaron Taylor Johnson, the actor with the much older and not attractive wife a.k.a Kick-Ass, owns his role. Saw that he won a Golden Globe but Shannon was somehow nominated for an Acadamy Award. Why this disparity? Anyways he was good and in is the only memorable thing about this movie.

I'm disappointed by this film. Read it was highly acclaimed, got nominations and was said to leave you disturbed. It left me annoyed by that pathetic ending and how so much of the movie was pointless to watch (everything with Adams). I'm sure that if it didn't have such good actors no one would have batted an eye at it. Given that the director is some dude from the world of fashion who just decided to become a Hollywood director seemingly with no issues then it wouldn't surprise me that the praises behind him are somewhat hollow and green.

P.S. been watchin some animated DC movies lately and they are soooo much better than the Hollywood ones.

The Omen III
Sam Neil hams it up as Damien. Awful end to the trilogy. Such a flat, anti-climatic ending. The equivalent of if Infinite War II ends by Hawkeye killing Thanos with an arrow to the back 2/10

The burnt baby is a terrible effect too. It's a real shame how badly they fecked this up.

Class of 1984 - I got a nostalgia kick having seen this back when it first came out on video. It's held up pretty well although modern kids would struggle with it I'm sure. It's got a very capable cast and the kids are actually menacing without being OTT comic-book types. Perry King is really good as the terrorized teacher but Roddy McDowall steals the show, and the young actor playing Stegman should have had more of an acting career. It's a bit of a Death Wish remake with kids, even down to the awful piano music just before something terrible happens. Stay away from the 'sequel' though...Class of 1999.

Avengers: Infinity War. Ok I guess, but it's way too messy and busy. Constant CGI action is too tiresome for my old eyes these days. No character was memorable, at least from the *heroes* side. It's a flick of one liners.

Thanos was nice, but kinda silly. He'd need to cull worlds, what, every 50 or so years?

Is it out online?

Mamma Mia: Tokyo Drift

Andy Garcia does his best impression of a Greek Sean Connery. Cher turns up in a helicopter at some point. And looks like she's CGI. Pierce Brosnan makes himself sound like a good singer a decade ago.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - a catastrophic misfire that should kill a franchise that had no right to move beyond the original

$1.2 billion at the box office. The franchise is gonna keep going until it's reached space. Jurassic Universe 2030!

Space Raptors don't infuriate the alt-right man-children, for one. Although they must have found a female veterinarian vexing.

True story, I once saw a tweet from such an alt right man child that said something along the lines of.. "If Jurassic Park was made now, in this liberal snowflake SJW world, they'd probably have the dinosaurs change sex or something"... Apparently completely unironically.

The SJWs won't sleep until we have big, scaly dinosaur dicks swinging all over the place.

Are you on shrooms?
