Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Yeah Inside Man is a cool flick. It's as if Hollywood has forgotten to make such movies.

Having enjoyed Your Name I had a look at another of the director's films, 5 Centimetres per Second. I liked it but not as much as the former. The ending has stuck with me today more than I thought it would though. This guy makes pretty films.

The Manchurian Candidate
In the midst of the Gulf War, soldiers are kidnapped and brainwashed for sinister purposes. Been on a Denzel marathon recently. I remember when this came out, I skipped it, thinking it's just a political drama but now that I've seen it, really enjoyed it. Loved how they played on paranoia and had lots of scenes with characters talking directly to camera... created a creepy feel to it 7/10

This new Robin Hood film looks fecking terrible. The Morgan Freeman role is reprised by Jamie Foxx and RH isn't even wearing green.

Ghost Stories
Arch skeptic Professor Phillip Goodman embarks upon a terror-filled quest when he stumbles across a long-lost file containing details of three cases of inexplicable 'hauntings'. I LOVED the theatre play of this and whilst the film was decent, it was no way near as good. The acting was hit and miss (although Martin Freeman was excellent), the transitions between the stories at times felt jarring and some of the editing/sound design felt off. It's quite short though and there are enough creepy scenes to make this worth watching 6/10

Sicario 2
Enjoyable movie but I was expecting (hoping) for something different. But I do love the brutal and unforgiving nature of the characters.

Great score again, however that's because it seemed like it was the same score that the first movie had.

FWIW the first movie is one of my favorites that I've watched in a long time.

How it ends
A movie that deserves no elaborate review. What the feck is Forest Whitaker doing in this dross. 1/10.

Let Us Prey
Held in a remote police station, a mysterious stranger takes over the minds and souls of everyone inside. Saw this a few years back but completely forgot it so it felt quite fresh. The cinematography and atmosphere created by it were fantastic. The mystery was intriguing as well. Main criticism is it takes a little too long to get to the thrilling final act, so maybe they should have paced it more carefully. Also, a few actors were not great. Having said that, it's not your standard horror movie and lots to enjoy here 7/10

I absolutely love this movie. The scene where the commander kicked in the door and asked "who the feck called me old" was hilarious.

The Insider I ordered this from Netflix thinking it was that other film with George Clooney and Tilda Swinton about corporate shenanigans. This one went on far too long and had lots of confusing scenes in it where I wasn't exactly sure what was happening. Lots of eye close-ups too for some reason. In the end the story wasn't particularly compelling although the death of independent network journalism was well conveyed. Al Pacino just does Al Pacino since the early 90s and Russell Crowe seemed to be warming up for that film where he did the disturbed scientist.

Deep Blue Sea
I thought it would be good for a late night laugh, but it seems that I forgot just how truly rubbish it is.

1/10

"The Seven Five" is a wild documentary. One of the best I've seen so far in the crime genre.

A Quiet Place (2018)

A movie i had great expectations, but once again, disappointed in the end.

People making stupid decisions just for the sake of the plot. feck that shit. Also, it wasn't scary at all. (some major plot holes too)

The idea behind the movie was good, but not the best execution.

5/10

The stories were decent, the acting was a bit shite apart from Martin Freeman he was excellent.
There was a couple of creepy parts, but nothing really scary.
I thought it was just OK

That was funny when SLJ got eaten. I saw this in Cairns the night before a 3-day scuba trip to the Barrier Reef. Not a good choice.
Lucky you. My year at school was the first to have the option of picking film studies, so I picked it thinking I would be watching some classics like Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove or possibly even something like Tarkovsky but the teacher decide that Deep Blue Sea and the 2000 McG(Yes that's actually he's real name)movie Charlie's Angels were the films we have to study for the whole year. So yeah I've seen DBS well over 20 times in a one year.

Qft.
Really not sure why this got so much hype. In fact, I'd call it one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Zero thrills and zero connection to the main characters for me. Maybe I'm just a cold dude.

Nah. But only a proper movie can bring those feelings back.

If they do a sequel to his movie (the ending kinda gave me that vibe), i hope they make it a lot better.
