Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Rampage

- Dwayne Johnson
- Stupid plot
- Insane action sequences
- Giant monsters
- Stupid villains

All the ingredients to be a terrible film and yet it was oddly funny in a "this is bloody awful but i'm still smiling" kind of way. Just a pity that the Fast and Furious crew didn't turn up to save the day, now THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN EPIC.

Wonder

So I gave this a watch tonight. Basically, it's about a kid with a deformed face and him starting school.
For the type of film, it was very good in my opinion. It's one of them that sort of makes you want to make a difference.
You feel for the kid. Must be heartbreaking.

Also, being a bit older, these films sort of relate to things in life, and they get to you
7.7/10

What is it with Alex Garland, his scripts start out intriguing but then it's like his mind starts to erode halfway through and they get progressively more stupid and resorting to genre clichés. Ex Machina was tastefully executed though, somehow.
And also your favourite film Sunshine

Wind Chill

Two college students share a ride home for the holidays, but when they break down on a deserted stretch of road, they are preyed upon by the ghosts of people who have died there.
Thought this had potential, good in parts, but to be honest I got bored with it.
This could have been so much more.

4/10

Supertroopers 2

There are a quite few funny moments, but nothing to make you laugh out loud, and quite a few moments which are just stupid and not funny. Just utterly forgettable and pointless. Highlight was Rob Lowe tugging on a penis.

Ghostland is the same as "the incident in ghostland"?

I feel like I downloaded the Asylum version of the real movie.

Not too good so far... The smelling pussy part was funny though.

Had to stop at the 45 minute mark...hopefully the rest is better.

Finished it. Feels like a mix of different classic horror movies, but with shitty acting and execution.

4/10

(Inheritance is next. hopefully is better,)

Incredibles 2 : awesome awesome movie, it was fun, witty with some great voice acting and original characters. One of the best superhero movies of the year IMO
The jokes didn't feel forced or overdone and the super powers were very well used
The slight complaint I have is that the Villain wasn't very strong but I felt it was more about the family then crime fighting

Hats off to Brad Bird for the script and direction.
And Jack Jack, incredible just incredible :D
My rating : 8/10

Said it before that the Rock will make anything that comes his way....this movie was fecking dire....but he genuinely seems like a good guy irl, so I'll forgive the shite he constantly puts out because he seems to be enjoying life.

He's also not really got any delusions of grandeur, he's fairly aware most of the stuff he puts out is fun nonsense and embraces that.

Truth or Dare

A harmless game of Truth or Dare among friends turns deadly when someone -- or something -- begins to punish those who tell a lie or refuse the dare.
I was OK , something a bit different, but felt it was lacking something, the horror was not that good, you knew what was going to happen and you knew her big secret, it was obvious.
That ending ! set up nicely for Truth or Dare 2 ,3 4 and 5 , this will be another Final Destination.

4.5/10

This generations Matthew McC. Too likeable to criticise. He'll win a best actor Oscar in 10 years when he moves into his dramatic actor phase

After seeing that @Dirty Schwein is on team Insidious and not team Conjuring I trust your review more.
Haha to be fair I love them both, just think insidious went a little 'further' with astral projection whereas conjuring didn't break any new ground.

Think it's the same one yeah. Dint think it's as bad as you've said there...

Ocean's 8
The missus forced me to go to this movie. Expected an Ocean's 11 knock off with a female cast and that's basically what it is. It's a lot more fun than the reviews online would suggest though. The heist isn't nearly as spectacular as the one in the "original" and the plot is very predictable, but the cast is fun and has good chemistry. I especially liked Helena Bonham Carter. Though I'm sure it will make me sound like a typical male movie goer, for me the scenes with James Cordon were by far the funniest thing in the movie.

7/10

You mean the Superman film where Superman kills thousands of people, levels his home town and half of Metropolis, is brought up by a sociopath who tells him not to save drowning children, then inexplicably throws himself into a hurricane for no reason, and ends with Superman (the most honerable of all the Superheroes) violently breaking the neck of his enemy, whose only gripe was that Superman’s crazy biological dad was a nepotistic genocidal maniac, but who also managed to save his essence somehow, as a plot convenient ghost person thing, who could turn up at convenient moments because THIS FILM IS RIDICULOUS RAOUL, WHAT THE feck ARE YOU THINKING!!!?

And as @Archie Leach says, like all Synder’s films, it’s also a super dumb, white alpha male wankfest paen to Objectivism (his next project is an adaptation of The Fountainhead, as if to ram home the point) which is pretty much the very last thing that should ever philosophically be associated with fecking Superman...

Anyone who thinks it’s a good film, let alone a good Superman film, strikes me as the kind of Paul Ryan motherfecker who thinks American Psycho is a coming of age tale. Is that a good enough answer?

Where you standing on racism in America these days, btw? Still think it’s moot?
This is one of the best movie reviews Í've ever read.

Tusk
An obnoxious podcaster gets more than he bargained for when he goes to the interview a weird of man that claims to have so many stories to share. I quite enjoyed this the first time I saw it but on second watch, it's not very good. A bit all over the place 4/10

Shot Caller

The story of a hard working family man who goes to prison because of a car accident he causes. Once institutionalised, he becomes a gang leader as he looks for a way to keep himself protected. Really enjoyed this. Didn't realise Jamie Lannister has these acting chops. A really fun character study and a good look at the American institutionalisation system. Enjoyed it a lot 8/10

A Quiet Place

I can't for the life of me understand how this gets such good ratings. It's an endless list of glaring inconsistencies, braindead decisions by every character in it and some of the biggest plotholes I can remember in any movie. By far the worst high-rating movie I've ever seen. Don't watch this, its utter stupidity will just frustrate and anger you.

Abysmal/10

Unsane
A woman is falsely admitted to a mental asylum. In the asylum, one of the staff members is her previous stalker... Or is it in her head? Who gives a feck, this is such a piece of shit movie, maybe some movies need studio intervention. The protagonist is such a moron, constantly making moron decisions and the plot has more holes than a golf course. The acting was good though 2/10

I always wonder why so many horror movies (that I never watch) keep getting made and then I visit this thread.

That said I watch far fewer movies now and far more TV as the quality of the later has improved out of sight over the last decade or so.

Hereditary
So after much hype, I finally sat down to watch this and it lived up to the hype plus more. Firstly, from a technical standpoint, it was splendid. Sound was used creatively and every frame felt like a picture. Loved the slow build tension and the final act of something I can't get out of my mind. The acting was also A*! It did have a few clunky exposition dumps and didn't establish some basic rules, so the film did need some post reading, but that's ok I guess. Thoroughly enjoyed it 8.5/10

Blockers

Three patents try to block their daughters from having sex on prom night. Unexpectedly funny comedy. Love Leslie Mann, such a milf! Ike Barinholtz is always amusing and surprisingly, John Cena has really good comedy chops. Laughed multiple times although I doubly I'll remember this film a week from now 7/10

I enjoyed Hereditary, that said I thought the second half wasn't anywhere near as good as the first half, it seemed Not a patch on Rosemary's Baby(similar theme) but well worth a watch for any horror fan.

The second half is very divicive but I was on board. Thought it earned it.

Valerian has more creativity and originality in a hastily tossed off chase sequence than most sci fis have in their entire run time, but it wastes what seems like 50 different film ideas on an ironically rote and obvious plot and two of the most unlikable leads in recent memory. I wanted Dane Dehaan to die multiple times in every scene, or at least be violently slapped by the nearest character at all times, and standard bland Luc Besson fetish skinny white androgynous supermodel No407 barely registered above “there” most of the time. He even went as far as to invent an entire alien race of them this time, which is nice for him. I hope he got to feck a few of them, ‘cos they certainly weren’t there for their acting chops.

It should’ve been a spiritual sequel to Fifth Element, and it wanted to be, but the leads were so insufferable it I genuinely struggled to get through it. Needs more Bruce Willis.

It's on Netflix and I want to watch it in a fun "Bees don't lie" sort of way.

Yeah, it’ll definitely fill that quota. It’s got some really fun little sequences that kind of feel like they could be their own little films. It’s just a shame Dane Dehaan is in them, trying to do a Han Solo/Starlord bit which he absolutely, unequivocally can not do. Also did I mention Luc Besson really likes skinny androgynous supermodel types? I don’t know if anyone has noticed?

Perfectly summed up. I wanted to love this movie, it looked incredible and had some fantastic ideas(the heist especially) but the lead actor was just so woefully miscast it broke any immersion that built.

I started watching it in exactly that sort of way. Never got round to finishing it, though, for reasons outlined by mockney above. Although I didn't mind Cara Lavigne too much. Yer man was fecking insufferable and their supposedly sexual tension fuelled "banter" made me want to throw my television out the window.

Even before you factor in the appalling casting, the characters are just bad, and their dialogue is awful. Like Pogue said, the banter is pretty much outright hateful. A hybrid mix of Chris Pratt, Paul Rudd and George Clooney would struggle to make it work, let alone Dane Dehaan (who is a perfectly decent actor, just under no circumstances a suave leading man type)

Besson has always been really good at the little world building bits inbetween the story of his films (all the Gautier designed stuff in Fifth Element still holds up incredibly well despite being absolutely bonkers!) but quite bad at, well, a lot of the other stuff. Like creating likeable characters. Even in his best work. I mean, the first draft of Leon had Reno feck Portman...So, you know...yeah

He’s inventive as all feck though. Which is always endearing. I’m glad he’s out there making stuff. Even if it’s mostly bad stuff these days.

TAU (2018)

Available on Netflix and starring Maika Monroe (from It Follows) as a young woman kidnapped and imprisoned in a hi-tech house controlled by sophisticated AI called TAU, designed and built by the scientist, Alex who kidnapped her for his research along with other captives, who suffice to say don't get much screen time in this. No surprises for who gets it first by the way!

It's an interesting premise with some clever concepts but which fails to get going ultimately, though still retaining a certain amount of intrigue nonetheless. The film centres around the relationship that develops between TAU and the prisoner, Julia as they make sense of the 'prison' they both share. Turns out they have quite a lot in common after all. Their need for knowledge to achieve their own ends results in a friendship much to the bemusement and frustration of Alex, who fails miserably to contain the situation.

The once perfect order inside the house rapidly descends into chaos by means of an implausible chain of events that you just have to go along with. The AI's struggle to comprehend it's own existence and morality has been done a hundred times before but although the film tries to avoid all the predictable cliches, you really can't get away from some of the more standard ones, to which it succumbs.

Not much circumstantial insight is provided in this film, which makes it kind of claustrophobic. Perhaps that is intentional on the part of the director. Not sure whether it's set in the present day or the not too distant future but to be fair, that wouldn't really matter. The tech would not look out of place in Stark Towers and with elements similar to Ex-Machina, the film has a familiar feel to it.

Yes, it's a ridiculous story with an equally ridiculous ending but I actually quite enjoyed it. Monroe is pretty decent in this and pretty much carries the film on the strength of her performance. At just over 90 minutes, you won't feel that cheated at the end.

I'm giving this a 6.5/10.

Pengabdi Setan (Satan's Slaves)
After dying from a long running disease, a mother comes back from the afterlife for her children. I have been searching for this Indonesian horror flick for a while and finally saw it, but was slightly disappointed. Whilst the story was fine and there was a lot of character work, the scares felt very generic. The first few worked quite well but as the film went on, it became more and more predictable. And whilst I really liked the family, the side characters were all flat and stupid. Maybe it didn't help that I'd just seen Hereditary a day prior, which has a similar story but was much more inventive 6/10

Rampage - fun movie, Expected it to be a lot cheesier but it was actually quite enjoyable.
The CGI was pretty good and there were a few scenes like the giant wolf taking down the Chopper and the crocodile thingy taking down the fighter.
The villains were bad to meh but Dwayne Johnson was good
Pretty good to kill some time : 7/10

Felon - similar plot and by the same director as Shot Caller is also good

Sicario2
More sicario shenanigans. If you like the first you’ll like the second. 8/10
Man, I really liked this movie. Prolly not as good as the first in terms of overall quality, but just as enjoyable. Movie might lean too political, but all that is forgotten once the action kicks off.

Ending definitely leads you to think there’ll be a part 3.

Sleepaway Camp

Kids at a summercamp, murderer on a spree.

Great acting, unique script, ace special effects and homoeroticism for days. What's not to like?

Lovers of fine cinema will enjoy this film more than horror movie afficionados but I can't imagine anyone being disappointed after the watch.

Coming in at 84 minutes I'll give it an 8.4/10.

i heard it was always written as a trilogy so most likely.

A documentary, but will post it here as it seems the best place. Just saw 13th on Netflix, and it is as brilliant as it is heart wrenching. I realize it’s very popular to dislike America right now, but the way it explains the monetizing (not sure if it’s the right word) of the prison system and rhetoric of the people in power is disturbing to say the least. Didn’t really know much about mandatory minumums and the three strikes and you’re out policy, but this has shed some light on the idiocy and cruelty of both.
Highly recommendable.
