Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I turned it off after 20 minutes, lost interest. No charm and the scenes just felt like loosely assembled individual scenes, sort of like the old horror movies by Italian directors where they casually jump from scene to scene.

Difference is the old Italian directors manages to do it with charm, while Rogue One like Force Awakens just didn't have the Star Wars feel at all and totally devoid of charm.
Word.

I don't know how anyone could feel anything for those stiff cardboard cutouts. The corny attempts at humour made it even worse.

by the sounds of it , I am the only person who actually liked Rouge One

The movie and characters are totally devoid of charm, also it was actually boring.

And what is it with all these obligatory female heroes running around and being shit? They don't have kitchens in space?

Joking. Still female heroes are shit.

If you want a movie with space-opera charm then watch Serenity

That is how it should be done. One of my favourite scifi's of all time.

What were your impressions on it? Don't think I saw your review of the film.

Like I said, it's weird, because I thought it's a very flawed film, but still really enjoyed it. You mentioned the old-school Hollywood feel that I thought worked brilliantly (especially the river scenes tipping their hat to Aguirre and Apocalypse now), and the epic-y back and forth between England and Amazonia via WWI is also something you don't really get in films anymore. Fawcett's character is brilliantly built over the entirety of the film; I loved that they gave him a reason you could empathise with for his first trip, but this gradually moves to an irrational obsession over the course of the story.

Loads of stuff irked me though, especially Sienna Miller's character who is awfully one-dimensional. As are most of the other characters to be honest; Bearded R-Pat, his other companion, his son... Scottish Alfred Molina was probably the exception. Also, I thought the editing was really off for the scenes in England, took me out of the film a few times.

The ending sealed it though, both the jungle scene and the last shot with his wife, I thought those were absolutely brilliant.

I've got a soft spot for films about obsession though, so I might be a bit biased.

Same here, probably one of the reasons I enjoyed it as much.

I also liked the work around the sound, their voices were almost muffled in all the jungle scenes, adding to the impression of claustrophobia and oppression of the nature.

Colors (1988): 6.5/10

Writing was a bit shitty but if there is something that I'll always keep loving about 80s/90s movies is their way of displaying urban decay and grittyness.

Oh I went to see Kong last night, it's not bad for a blockbuster. The humour doesn't always work, but the rhythm of the film is quite good and the action scenes are impressive. Tom Hiddlestone is actually very believable as the bad ass hero, Brie Larsson is good as well (even though the characters are obviously not that developed). Overall, the 2 hours or so go past pretty well. Probably quite forgettable, but not bad.

Was there a post-credits scene? Couldn't be bothered to stay once it ended.

The Great Wall
By the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, two films that I adored in my younger days so was looking forward to this. It was shit. They must have blown the budget on Matt Damon and Oberyn because the CGI monsters looked as realistic as Kim Kardashian's arse. Again a plot of a white saviour showing the Chinese 'how it's done'. Yes, there were some spectacular action set pieces but overall, it was a CGI mess of a borefest 4/10

Don't Knock Twice

A mother and daugher are haunted by the spirit of an evil witch. Starts off quite good and has moments of great suspense and is shot really well but there were too many problems with this flcik to truly enjoy it. The pacing was all over the place, the story was too convoluted, too many jump scares and cliched horror tropes. The two main actresses were good but that only highlighted how bad the supporting cast were. Shame considering this had the potential to be great 6/10

Has anyone seen Personal Shopper yet?

Not sure what I think. I definitely enjoyed watching it, it left me in a similar trance to the (better) Under The Skin, Kristen Stewart was excellent and I could get behind the weirder scenes. But I found the ending infuriating, and feel like the film squandered a lot of the potential it built up over the first two acts. Would be curious to see how the caf reacts. Definitely one to watch in the cinema though, you'd have no chance getting drawn in while watching this on a laptop.

Re. the confusing plot;
What do people think happened in the hotel? Did she just give the ex-boyfriend up to the police or was there a spectral element to that part of the film? Had no idea what we were meant to think tbh.

She gets her baps out doesn't she?

Apocalypse Now (1979)

A visually stunning movie but rather dull in substance. I understand the movie wants to show the sheer depravity and horrors of war but so many scenes were just boring and the writing itself was weak too IMO, plenty of shit dialogues.
Definitely not one I'll watch a 2nd time.

Did you watch the original or the redux version? The redux version had more scenes and dialogue and is far poorer for it. The original was a masterpiece.

I watched the original version. Once again, a visually stunning movie, absolutely but I found it more style over substance.

Don't Kill It | https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dont_kill_it

An ancient demon who jumps from the infected person to the person that killed the guy previously infected goes bat shit crazy in a rural town in Mississippi. And who do you think comes along to save the day? Dolph Lundgren in the shape of a cowboyhat wearing demon hunter with a mean streak.

As you've probably figured by now the acting isn't great, but way above what I was expecting, and the movie itself is entertaining as feck. A proper B-movie splatterfest with about 200 creative casualties and non-stop action. Also Dolph is fecking great in this

It is actually well received by most critics as well with reviews on Rottentomatoes being favourable, which surprised me.

7/10

The Runner
A disgraced politician tries to get his life back together. You can see Sarah Poulsons tits and an extra point for the presence of NIC Cage. Otherwise horrible and boring 3/10

The House On Pine Street

A pregnant woman is being haunted by something in her new home. Starts off really promising, very slow build up, which i like but it rushes through the final act, which is a shame as it feels very unsatisfactory 6/10

Power Rangers

Went down nostalgia lane with low expectations due to the reviews but i didn't hate it. It was slow due to it being an origin story but that was expected. It has enough Easter eggs and nods to the original to enjoy it for old school fans but there were many plot holes, it was missing bulk and skull and the biggest flaw was that it takes them 1 hour and 40 minutes to finally morph, then rushes through to the conclusion. Still, it was ok and hopefully the sequel will be better 6/10

Would you sit through a 3/10 again to see Sarah Poulson's tits?

Kong: Skull Island

Not bad. About what you'd expect from it. Kong looked amazing, and it's nice to see SLJ play a more serious character for a change. 7/10

Logan - One of the better superhero movies in recent years for me personally. The best Wolverine we've seen yet, it was nice to see a more mature/controlled version of himself. The character showed a realistic representation of what you would expect of Logan at this stage. Finally a movie which does the character justice. Jackman may retire his claws with pride. 9/10

Kong - Not bad at all. Great cast, entertaining action sequences, impressive visuals and some funny moments - is all this movie needs really. Plot was simple but did the job, Kong himself looked great. 7.5/10

Get out -
Not your typical Hollywood Horror flick. Providing the viewer lowers expectations on the "horror" front and rather expects an entertaining thriller, you will certainly enjoy this one. Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. 9/10

Great movie, would agree about the classification piece as well.

Grave (Think it's called Raw in the UK?)

Not usually a big fan of horror/gore, but I couldn't look away from this one. The symbolism might be a little on the nose, but I loved the film - it's refreshingly bold and confident. Minor gripe with the last scene, thought it could've been a tad more subtle.
Saw this yesterday, pretty refreshing as you say and quite impressive for a first film. From a gore point of view, it wasn't as bad as I had expected and it packed the right dose of humour to make it overall very bearable. Agree with your take on the final scene though.

Split
So this is the second time (first being 6th Sense) where I accidentally found out the ending of this directors films but putting that aside, I didn't think this film is as good as people hyped it to be. It felt waaay too long and some of the character decisions were baffling. The film at points just felt all over the place but James Mccavoy was brilliant and I think it's an interesting enough film to recommend. I just wish I watched it without knowing the ending 6/10

No Escape

Owen Wilson and his family move to an unidentified (seems like Thailand) country because of his new job but over night, a military coup happens and the rebels are trying to kill all foreigners on the spot. I fecking loved this. The action kicks in very quickly, no time to waste. Balls to the wall excitement and some truly harrowing scenes (especially if your a parent). I just wanted an all out action thriller and that's exactly what I got. Owen Wilson was also great in it 8/10
