Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Finally got round to seeing this at the weekend, brilliant film perfectly acted throughout. Pulls no punches in the story telling, shocking to think how long it's been going on for and probably still is. 8.5/10

Saw this yesterday, pretty refreshing as you say and quite impressive for a first film. From a gore point of view, it wasn't as bad as I had expected and it packed the right dose of humour to make it overall very bearable. Agree with your take on the final scene though.
As much as I hate to say this (because I love Drive), it reminded me of a Winding Refn film, only with substance.

The music was brilliant too, especially during the finger scene...

Split
So this is the second time (first being 6th Sense) where I accidentally found out the ending of this directors films but putting that aside, I didn't think this film is as good as people hyped it to be. It felt waaay too long and some of the character decisions were baffling. The film at points just felt all over the place but James Mccavoy was brilliant and I think it's an interesting enough film to recommend. I just wish I watched it without knowing the ending 6/10

No Escape

Owen Wilson and his family move to an unidentified (seems like Thailand) country because of his new job but over night, a military coup happens and the rebels are trying to kill all foreigners on the spot. I fecking loved this. The action kicks in very quickly, no time to waste. Balls to the wall excitement and some truly harrowing scenes (especially if your a parent). I just wanted an all out action thriller and that's exactly what I got. Owen Wilson was also great in it 8/10

I didn't see the big deal with Split either. Been done before so many times and better in my opinion. Didn't really see the point of the ending either.

Great film.

Kong: Skull Island - serviceable schlock. Would've been pretty dull without John C. Reilly.

Beauty and the Beast - don't really see the point in this "live-action" (at what point does a film become animation, this is 75% CGI) remake trend. Basically a shot for shot recreation. Emma Watson is characteristically bland, Ewan McGregor is required to do a French accent (why though, no one else has one) which is beyond him. Luke Evans is very good as Gaston. It's making a shit tonne of cash so I guess we'll see more of this.

Bleed For This - Decent enough movie with a fascinating story. Really a fan on Miles Teller, mostly for Whiplash though. 6.5/10

They're doing Lion King next year, aren't they?

Had you seen Jungle Book last year? I thought it was pretty good, and it wasn't a pure shot for shot remake, if I remember correctly. And the voice acting was great.

I think the Jungle Book was based more on the book than the Disney film which is why it was different. I agree, thought it was decent.

Yeah, I guess the point of remaking these films is that it's playing to peoples childhood memories of the cartoons. I grew up with the renaissance of them, so Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Lion King. So from my perspective, i'd probably be interested to watch them. I wouldn't be interested or bothered to watch any of the others though.

T2 Trainspotting

If the first movie ever meant anything for you this one is a must. I thought Danny Boyle did a decent job in reviving this absolute classic. No bullshit, just an honest sequel.

8/10

I just don't get Emma Watson at all, she's a charisma vacuum. She's a smug wooden 'head girl in the school play' in everything she does. Is her casting in things literally just to please Harry Potter fans who grew up wanking to her? She's stealing an A list career. At least Radcliffe is trying...

I've never seen her in anything, is she A-list now then? Potter's been pretty good in the few things I've seen

I'm looking forward to the live-action remake of The Rescuers Down Under.

They can bin the rest of them for all I care.
Oh feck Rescuers down under was awesome. Called Bernard & Bianca in France. Tommy Wiseau to play the albatros.

But I agree. She's shit.

Belle was the sex in the cartoon. Although I was more of an Ariel fanboy.

She's no Meg in Hercules.

Yeah, was called Bernard & Bianca in Sweden too. Taught me everything I currently know about Australia.

That has to be the reason though, right? I really can't think of anything else. She was supposed to be in La La Land originally, and I can only imagine the car crash that would've been, but it's baffling to begin with that someone as meticulously wanky as Chazzelle would even consider someone so bland. But then he's only 32. Perhaps he grew up wanking to her too?

Though I'll admit I don't even get that. She's sweetly androgynous, sure, but office fit at best. The only role I reckon she could play somewhat convincingly is "girl who sneaks onto pirate ship disguised as a 12 year old boy in a deliberately bad film within a film"

My friend who works at Disney said something along the lines of: They're remaking these to not lose the license to these properties. So expect many more.

Watson reminds me of that one dull person you get in every workplace. Who's not even dull in any particularly characteristic way. They just kind of, are there. It's not that you can't flirt with them, or talk to them about things, or have a joke with them...it's just that when you do it's always really boring. So you can't even dislike them or accuse them of being boring or stuck up...they just kind of exist but for no real reason, like the "End" button on a keyboard.

Bah! He was so bad in The Woman in Black that everyone screamed when he was onscreen! :D

I dont mind Radcliffe. He was decent in Swiss Army Man, Horns and even Now You See Me 2. Emma Watson on the other hand is like plain soup. Boring.

She has name recognition, is white as the driven snow, and probably fairly cheap. Same reason Dan Stephens is the lead I'd say, except for the name recogntion. The thing's a surefire hit, why waste cash on genuine stars.

Due to unpopular demand, here are more of my boring thoughts on TWiB: Radcliffe's cor blimey accent scared his children, who looked older than he did. It's a terrible film but he out-terribled it.

Bolded part is probably key though, she's a bit 'girl next door' so not completely unattainable in the minds of said wankers.

I wish she was in La La Land. Would have been fascinating seeing someone so inherently un-charming in a movie that was all about charm.

Chloe in the Afternoon - Eric Rohmer's the man, a pleasantly cerebral experience as always.

I enjoyed this truly well-written piece from Zouzou's wikipedia page:

Zouzou was friend with many famous artists from the 60' s including George Harisson who she favored as a friend and his wife Patty Boyd. She also was very friendly with Bob Dylan whom she spent 5 days and 5 nights as a confident. Bob Dylan was then very much in love with his wife and always confided to her about how much he missed his spouse. Her boyfriends during her years of fame included Brian Jones (of the Rolling Stones), whom she was under his spell. Brian Jones used to toss bed mattresses out of some famous St Tropez Hotel instead of using lounge chairs. He initially met Zouzou at the Bilboquet after a concert and wanted her Cashmere sweater in trade for his sweaty white turtle neck. Michel Taittinger, Dave Davies (of the Kinks), Jean-Paul Goude and Jack Nicholson.[citation needed] and she is still friend with Jack Nicholson who also introduced her to Randy Newman.

Koe no Katachi - absolutely recommend it, especially for any anime fans. Amazing film.

D-Rad is the man.

I hadn't seen that one chief but I'll be sure to give it a swerve now! To be fair he's only about 14 still, bless him.

I think Emma Watson is basically a projection of many persons ideals. She is pretty, intelligent, doesn't have any scandals to her name and comes across as a generally good person. Add to this the fact that so many boys had a huge crush on her (or Hermione) when growing up and you know why she is so popular. People just like her a lot. I do, too. That alone can make you a lot of money in Hollywood. The great name recognition is a big plus, too. Talent is not everything in Hollywood. Sometimes it doesn't matter at all.
