Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Yeah. It's not funny if he's in on the joke. The whole point of the joke in the first place was that he wasn't.

Upstream Color

What the feck did I watch? Just googled sci-fi in netflix and this popped up with reviews claiming this to be better than awesome. Turned out to be a shit movie that's so artsy that it'd leave the viewers bewildered and mindfecked.

What defines an art movie?
The silences? The glaring lack of dialogue?
Shit background score?
Scenes not in sequence and in any semblance of order? Random scenes of nature or flower or bath tub interjected for no particular reason?

This movie has it all. Perfect for people who love 'abstract' and would pay a thousand quid for a picture of child scribblings.

Utter waste of time.

I remember @R.N7 recommending this film and it fecking with my head.

A little late to the party but I saw Logan last night. As someone who used to enjoy superhero films but has become jaded with the franchises to the point where I haven't seen the last Avengers, X-Men, Batman/Justice League, Spiderman etc. and have no desire to do so, I thought this was fantastic.

There are proper character studies, a nice stripped-back narrative without thousands of different heroes vying for screen time and some great performances (Jackman, Stewart, Holbrook and the young Keen were all superb) unlike anything in the last few technicolor messes I've seen from Marvel in recent years. The R-rating is put to terrific effect (perhaps a few too many fecks thrown in for the sake of it at times, but I think Logan's bewilderment and sense of powerlessness may justify them), the violence is engagingly brutal, and the treatment at times more closely resembles a horror or dare I say a western than a superhero flick.

If I can be negative about any of it I would say
the plot is pretty formulaic with a basic escort, cat and mouse structure established early on with no real twists to the plot, barring the introduction of the X-24 and some shocking deaths. I found the development of Logan and Laura's relationship entirely predictable, as well as the villains using Caliban and the adamantium bullet providing the coup de grace. Also I have some issues with a woebegone Logan's serum-induced burst of energy wearing off though he could still hold his own against a fully-healed X-24, to the point where he can hold him on the floor with a car door. I think he'd actually be torn to shreds in a straight fight.

The sense of vulnerability felt by two previously all-powerful and much-loved characters is actually quite distressful to witness at times (I was struck by how contrived the difficulties the two got into in previous films, such as being held in the air by metal skeleton and poisoned by Cerebro, felt in comparison), the humour such as it was was spot on, and I love how much room the characters were given to breathe in stark (geddit?) contrast to Avengers/X Men films I've seen in the past.

All in all an awesome experience and absolute catnip to people of my generation who've grown up with the X-Men and no longer feel satisfied with Marvel's many tentacled monster of a franchise. 8.5/10

Sharknado: The 4th Awakens

The usual pisstake movie with a few star wars themed incidents. They have tried to make it bigger and it starts with the usual Sharknado and moves on to Bouldernado, Lightningnado, Firenado and ultimately Nuclearnado.

As usual, leave all logic aside, get ready for events that defy all material understanding of reason, physics, etc and you'll have a decent time. Not as good as previous movies.

Seems the next one is to be in Paris, so get ready @Rooney in Paris

I'll prepare for a shark dressed like Maurice Chevalier then.

'Upstream Color' is one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen but I also found it extremely interesting and thought-provoking. Probably requires repeated viewings to appreciate, I liked it much better the second time.

Django Unchained.

Foxx , Waltz and DiCaprio all excellent, maybe DiCaprio's best film.
Plenty of blood and plenty of N bombs, loved the ending.
The music was perfect, the 2 hours and 45 mins flew by, not one bit was boring.
The part with the bags was hilarious
There was one bit I did not like and the was Samuel L Jackson, I hated his part , normally I like him.
There is no reason not to give this.

Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.
WTF have I just watched?
Dreadful film.

The Remains

After a family moves into an old Victorian home, they discover a chest in the attic containing antiques tainted by a malevolent spirit. As the antiques slowly possess each family member.
It nothing that has not been done before, dysfunctional family buy a haunted house, they find old stuff and strange things start to happen.
The acting is not terrible and the jumps in the film keeps you hanging on hoping for that happy ending you know will never happen.
Watch it once and never again.

The Emeryville Experiments

When their car crashes, 4 college kids seek help in Emeryville - a dilapidated village. New comers discover that place was once a ground for clinical experiments gone awry and plot an escape. They find themselves hunted by crazies.
Just no.

Us at Anfield? :D

Went to see Kong : Skull Island, thought it was excellent in a very overblown, OTT type of way. Good fun, and some good performances - John C. Reilly especially. Special effects were brilliant, some of the fight scenes between Kong and the Skull Crushers were amazing. At times it was almost like a cross between the original storyline and some Platoon/Predator/Southern Comfort moments thrown in during the jungle scenes.
Some good tunes on the soundtrack as well.

Quiz Show - I've always found Robert Redford to be a bit of a plodding bore as a director and so this was something of a surprise. Made cheating on a quiz show seem like the crime of the century. I reckon Rob Morrow has an ageing Ralph Fiennes portrait in his attic. Casting Scorsese in a role was a bit distracting, not least of all because he's a terrible actor.

I remember enjoying this one yet I can barely remember anything about it now.

The Magnificent Seven (remake)

I'm sure those who love the original will hate it, but if taken as a standalone revenge western, it's enjoyable enough and undemanding. Some decent performances, eg Denzel. Weird seeing the Chinese guy from the Walking Dead reinvented as a knife master mercenary, not being a whiny pussy hiding under a dumpster.

Doctor Strange

I was expecting it to be more like X-Men, but they positioned it as the avengers of the spiritual/temporal.
My main gripe was that it took itself far too seriously, considering all of the gobbledigook about different dimensions and the like.
Was just about watchable, but felt a bit silly, yet po-faced. Hope they don't want to build out a franchise of it.

Glenn wasn't in it was he? Sure you not talking about Byun Hyung Lee? Who's Korean

Get Out
Last year, i really enjoyed Green Room and Don't Breathe, both of which were low budget, self contained sleeper hits. This film sits nicely amongst those. It was intense as hell but equally funny. The acting all round was good and the narrative was told at a very nice pace. My only criticism is that most of the film felt very predictable to me, but that's probably because I've seen way too many horror films. Highly recommend this 8.5/10

Star Wars Rouge One.

I thought it was fantastic, far better then the second Trilogy and The Force Awakens.
For me 3rd after The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Liked the way they interrogated in to a New Hope.
Felicity Jones was top notch, in fact all the acting was excellent, I could not fault it.
I did enjoy the CGI restoration of Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, the CGI in the final 45 mins of this movie which is pretty bloody spectacular. The exception being the CGI young Princess Leia which was just CREEPY.
I though K-2SO the robot with the attitude was great.

See the Czech version instead.

Much Nilssy wow.

Saw Lost City of Z this weekend, I thought it was fantastic. It's very classic in its formal approach, the cinematography is breathtaking at time (Darius Khondji) and because of this approach and the music, at times it feels like an old Hollywood film. There's also little bits where they're exploring the forest and going down the river and you can't help but think of Aguirre or Apocalypse Now, but that aspect isn't that developed, which I guess is voluntary. Anyway, it's really worth seeing, it looks incredible on the big screen and the final shot is excellent as well.

Unintentionally had an Amy Adams weekend.

Arrival: had the plot ruined for me prior to seeing it so was going to give it a miss but out of boredom i reneged. I think the film was still solid even knowing the main plot mechanic.

Nocturnal Animals: Stylish thriller with an impressive cast; Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in particular were great. The real world plot was a bit flimsy and I wonder if the book itself would have made a stronger movie. Still kudos for avoiding so many of the Hollywood-ending tropes.

That's a shame, I definitely thought he had it in him to do something mad and crazy.

I feel you're ironic. In any case, for a little while there, I thought he'd go down that route but it wasn't to be - I think to a certain extent, he was limited by the story he was telling (hard to say anything more without spoiling the film). Doesn't make it any less of a good film, but it was just a tad disappointing.
The ending did make me think of the ending of Apocalypse Now though.

As much as it pains me to say, I'm going to have to side with Nilssy on the James Gray divide. All his films possess the right ingredients but I never feel anything at the end.
Charlie Dunham, Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller, at least he's assembled a cast that's just as meh as his directing.

Rogue One was okay. Don't foresee many re-watches, if any, but nice viewing. Easily better than Force Awakens, but hey, like that's any hard feat.

Could've done without Vader, Leia or Tarkin, last two looking way too distracting. And music sucks!

TFA was a more fun film for me, with better characters for sure.
The plot though...recycled so completely. I don't mind re-watching it at all, but at the back of my mind I'm thinking about how lazy it is.

I turned it off after 20 minutes, lost interest. No charm and the scenes just felt like loosely assembled individual scenes, sort of like the old horror movies by Italian directors where they casually jump from scene to scene.

Difference is the old Italian directors manages to do it with charm, while Rogue One like Force Awakens just didn't have the Star Wars feel at all and totally devoid of charm.
