Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Do they have a lot of twee hand clapping and harmonizing? I found it really grating, especially with some of the dialogues.

I don't advise googling to see what they look like.
Yeah, sort of grandiose but empty songs with visually impressive music videos that are undermined by the flaccid music. I'm pretty sure they used one of their songs in the trailer for Walter Mitty, which looked to have a similar aesthetic to Swiss Army Man. They're Icelandic too.

The Ice Palace - Stiffness and roughness around the edges aside, it was nice to see Picnic at Hanging Rock-esque etherealness transferred to a wintry Scandinavia.

I went to see La La Land the other day because it was -12 in Budapest and it was the only English film playing - it has lots of mediocre singing and only one actual character with any depth, but it did look great and the cinema was lovely and warm too

Saw The Girl With All The Gifts tonight - alright if you like zombie movies I suppose but it was borderline shite to be honest

Finally saw Focus
It was a nice movie, but they went for so many twists and turns which took away from other ones that would have been otherwise good. It was a nice fun time pass.

Listen up you hipster, Babadook, and especially It Follows are fantastic horror films. As are Hush, The Last Shift, Let Us Prey, Conjuring, Clown etc...

Plenty of good horror films out there if you do a bit of research.

started that one last night... 10 minutes in i realize i had already watched it, feck . It's ok.

The last shift tonight...

There are a bunch of great looking horror films I plan to watch soon:

Train To Busan, The Wailing, Under The Shadow, Eyes Of My Mother, The Autopsy Of Jane Doe, I Am Not A Seriel Killer.

Can't wait!

Train to Busan - 7,5/10
The autopsy of JD - 7/10
I am not a serial Killer - 7/10

Edit: Also I can see that you like me use the IMDB "People who liked this also liked.." feature :)

It is great.

I enjoyed Train To Busan and I'm Not A Serial Killer. Haven't seen the others though.

Hell or High Water - 6/10

Can't quite understand why this film is so (seemingly) universally loved.

Just felt like a No Country For Old Men knock-off, to me. Too many long repetitive scenes of exposition-filled dialogue between the two brothers.

It was pretty decent as a B-movie crime thriller like The Drop or Killing Them Softly. But I'm surprised it's been nominated for all these awards.

Jeff Bridges is no Tommy Lee Jones.

The last shift (2014)

what a mess!! seriously, its terrible.

3/10

hopefully let us prey is better :nervous:

Yeah I can't understand the hype "The Last Shift" gets, Let us Pray is 10x better.

Watch out for the Scottish lunatic wrapped in barb wire.

Why are many new horrors rated so low on IMDB? The majority has a rating below 6. Are they all that bad?

I mostly just use IMDB for the "people who liked this also liked.." feature.

For actual ratings I use Rottentomatoes. There you'll have a whole section of critics ratings, plus a public ratings section just below it.

Also reading some of the reviews on IMDB is well worth it, I often see movies rated at a 6/10 which gets a lot of applause in the reviews coloumn. Problem with a huge site like IMDB is that you have a lot of tweens trying to rate a indie horror movie, you just won't get an accurate assessment.

Been watching the Underworld series, as I couldnt quite remember it.

Underworld (2003) - the story is ok. As I was watching, I remembered stuff from my initial viewing (its the only movie in the franchise I actually remember). Kate Beckinsale looks fantastic. Story of vampires vs werewolves (lycans). The graphics look... old when you see the werewolves. But im not sure if thats a good thing or not in this case, as these arent the worst werewolves ive seen. BUt then again, most werewolves in these type of shows / movies are so badly done (True Blood another example I can think of).
It had some nice twists throughout but the action seemed the best part. I enjoy the genre, so enjoyed the movie.

Underworld: Evolution (2006) - basically a continuation of the movie above. Basically follows straight on for the present time (but of course introduces us to the first ever werewolf and first ever vampire). Also had a hybrid which was introduced in the first movie that is meant to be stronger than both. (though is sorta limited as not to overshadow Kate Beckinsale) Was a decent movie, but a bit shorter in length. Think it could have been better with about 15 more minutes, but whilst the OG vampire motiviation was clear, it was confusing why he was doing some of the things he did.

Still both movies were fun action.

Hacksaw Ridge - Superb film. One of my favourite this year. Mel Gibson won't get any accolades for it, but it's a hell of a gripping movie. Very good acting too from both Hugo Weaving and Andrew Garfield.

9/10
No Oscars for Mel Gibson, at least until hell freezes over.
I'm hearing good things about this so it's on my watch list.

All of Gibson's Directing films have been sublime - Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto etc. I'll have to check this one out.

The Watcher
A couple move into a house where there was a murder in the past. Once they move in, they are being stalked by someone in a raven suit. There were some good ideas and the film was ok until the setup was complete, then it just turned stupid and very tv movie like. The final twist was a joke 4/10

I Spit on Your Grave - I happened across this infamous video nasty last night having never seen it. Very low budget but it still packs a punch. Very brutal rape scene that never ends and then bloody revenge exacted upon the rapists. Does it better than any Michael Winner film, but that isn't difficult.

Yeah, it is a decent revenge flick, but the rape scene is somewhat protracted. The remake was ok, but pretty pointless. Same with Last House on the Left.

It's had Kate Beckinsale in latex.. they are a couple of the best films ever made ever.

@George Owen

Did you like "Let us prey" ?

got interrupted half way but ill finish it now. 45 min in and so far its on a different level to the last shit. Also Ser Davos.

Good fun. 5.5/10

the ending was a bit confusing... not sure who Ser Davos was in the end. G or the D? Not that it really matter...

as a horror movie though, i think i would put Clown over this one. It was bit more disturbing and creepy.

The End of the Tour - I really enjoyed this, even if there was a bit too much Jesse Eisenberg in his character. I particularly liked how it didn't attempt to give any insight into DFW or his suicide, but just told the story of the two of them on that tour and working on that piece. I felt like it portrayed Lipsky and his motivations in quite a negative light too, which you could then transfer to the film itself - what gives it the right to try and paint a picture of the man's life, based on really, very very little information or interaction? That may just be what I took from it though, slightly influenced by the knowledge that Wallace's estate objected to it. And considering I sought out, and watched, and enjoyed the film, I can't complain too strongly about it. RIP David Foster Wallace.

Elle - Blimey. I have no idea what I think. It was definitely engaging.

La La Land - I absolutely loved it. The cinematography and music were on another level, It's probably not for everyone because of the genre but it's the best movie I've seen at the cinema in some time. Gosling and Stone are both great as well I hope they sweep up at the Oscars.

9/10

Watched Nocturnal Animals yesterday. What a beautifully crafted film, with fantastic performances all around and a pretty brutal twist in the end. Works very well and keeps you thinking even after you've left the cinema. Pretty disturbing and uncomfortable for large parts, so maybe not for everyone, but I found it superb, one of the best films I've seen in a while.

La La Land - Movies honestly do not get better than this. A modern classic.

10/10

Glad there's no cynical reviews for La La Land yet, I know they'll come. Agree too that it's an instant classic. :)

Surprised that there's been so much negative reaction to this - I felt the same as you. Brutal but effective, it really got to me in the cinema. The first 30 minutes was about as tense as a film can get.

I loved this film. A lot of people disagree though...

Jackie - i respect Natalie Portman enough to assume Jackie was actually like that. This a pretty great biopic, tremendous cast, score, cinematography. When I was a wee lad, id have friends stay for the weekend and when they'd leave on a Sunday afternoon I'd always feel a deep melancholy for an hour or two. This film made me feel that again.

Also Peter Sarsgaard as Bobby K reminds me that there are so many terrific American actors been robbed of great roles because they aren't conventionally good looking. Sarsgaard could act DiCaprio off the table.
