Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I just can't do musicals. I dunno what it is but they leave me cold. I really like Grease though. I think that's because the songs are so good in it. I really like 'Consider Yourself' in Oliver! but most of the rest of it is shite....oh I like the pick a pocket or two one too.

I'm always kinda skeptic towards musicals but when I see them I often end up enjoying them, many of them have good stories that are just as dominating as the music numbers if not more, fine films like All That Jazz, Cabaret, Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Singin' in the Rain and On the Town. There's some really tedious bloated ones too though (My Fair Lady, Westside Story).

Yeah those are all great. I also liked Stormy Weather, Footloose, Blues Brothers, Fame, The Jolson Story and I'm sure there's a few more. I enjoy Elvis movies too but those don't really count as proper musicals.

I think I might have liked One From The Heart but it's been so long that I can't quite remember now.

I've listened to the Tom Waits soundtrack so many times that I ought to watch One From The Heart some day. 80's neon and Nastassja Kinski seems like a good combination.

I think it might have been one of Alex Cox's Moviedrome selections. That was a great series of films that used to be on Sunday nights on BBC2 back in the 1980s. I still have the companion book somewhere.

Love, sex aur dhokha (2010, Bollywood)
9/10
One of the best films I've seen, Bollywood or otherwise. About 50000 times more realistic than any Bollywood love story, slightly caricatured characters but they ring true, and super-realistic scenarios in the plot.
It's 3 different, slightly connected stories, about love/sex/cheating in today's India with twists on the usual modernity vs tradition clash; the other common thread being that we are watching them through a camera present as part of the plot: like film-making, or a CCTV camera.
The 1st story also is a parody of the over-the-top romantic Bollywood films.
Was watching it with an American who compared it to Pulp Fiction in terms of style.

There's a tumblr dedicated to it: http://moviedromer.tumblr.com/

They should bring that sort of programme back.

Yes it was really good, always something interesting and Cox was very watchable. Late night telly usually had something interesting on to watch back then.

Pete was amazing - I'd post something like 'Have you read *insert book-title here*?' and he'd reply: 'The new translation is awful - instead, try the draft version by Ecuadorian beat poet Yacksplacky Kazoo senior.'
In fairness, Yacksplacky Kazoo's version is so much better than Translator MacTranslatorface's.

Hmmm...I'm not sure I can sit through that.
I normally would never watch a musical. Have never liked a single one. La La Land was the first one I've ever liked. I saw it yesterday and still humming the songs now. Can't wait to see it again

I know that was said tongue firmly in cheek, but I thought it was also a really funny film!

The police station scene and the one where Michelle Williams asks him out for lunch should win Affleck the Oscar, surely.
You're right actually, there are some truly funny moments in it, it's very well handled - the relationship with his nephew notably is quite nice. But the sad moments are really, really sad. And yeah, don't think it's possible for Casey Affleck not to get the Oscar. His performance is perfect.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of musicals (admittedly mainly through laziness) yet I'm tempted to go again. It was just really well done.

Is La La Land a plain old musical or is it something more?

Just got back from watching it.

It's a very enjoyable film, and I wouldn't call it a plain old musical.

You can see how it was inspired by old Hollywood movies but it has a bit of something different but I won't go too far on that.

The acting really is superb, the music numbers are solid (especially the main theme). Also, its very peculiarly made, but interesting none the less.

Very enjoyable.

8/10

I quite liked Rise of the Lycans

Just watched it and really enjoyed it to. It had a whole Spartacus (TV Show) feel to it with the slaves, and the slaves being free. It was a really good prequel and had a nice background story feel to how the war started.

Hey, Pidge, do Monster Calls. You're good at this writing lark and I want to hear what you make of it. There's a good man.

Well I had my sister do the review of A Monster Calls for Film In Dublin, but I think the film is good. It's mature and it's sincere but not mawkish.

...how's that?

I didn't realise that was your own review, Pigeon. Fix the typo!

Works for me. I thought the same. Is your sisters review easy enough to find via your linky above?

Aye, if you click Reviews up at the top there it's only one or two down in the archives. It's a bit shorter but in fairness she wrote it just before heading to get a tooth pulled.

Ah Christ, can you save me some time and just tell me where it is?

Para 4, "There’s the definiate self-important drive of a Chazelle character there" :D

Will not believe you if you tell me that's just a clever person's word.

Dead Man - slow, meandering, looks a bit like a grunge band music video, dated by the fact Johnny Depp looks like a handsome woman, packed with wonderful cameos (Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop in a dress). I like this film a lot.

Only Lovers Left Alive - my favourite Jarmusch film. Noticed a lot of structural and thematic similarities to Paterson, obsessed with the passing of time and the value of art. I want all Eve's books and all Adam's guitars.

Dead Man might be my favourite Jarmusch. Good work by Neil Young on the soundtrack.

Managed to catch Arrival in the cinema when I went home for Christmas. Probably my favourite film of 2016.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Decent film but a bit slow and bland in places, which was always a possibility considering it's an origin story to a new franchise. There were some cool action scenes and the monsters were pretty fun but the human characters were as bland as plain soup, and I struggled to understand Eddie Redmayne whenever he spoke 6/10

Arrival

Heard many differing views on this film so didn't know what to expect. I enjoyed it. It tried to do something different with the alien invasion sub-genre and I appreciate that. Felt a bit long and had some clunky characters/dialogue but the twist completely got me and the film leaves you thinking about the dilemma it sets, which is something I love 7.5/10

Hunt For The Wilderpeople

Started a bit slow but from about 15 minutes in, it became fantastic. Really enjoyed it. Very charming, funny and it all felt natural and genuine. Found out later that this was by the same guy that made What We Do In The Shadows, which is one of my favourite comedies. I hope he does a good job with Thor: Ragnarok. Really like his style 8/10
