Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Mission Impossible Rouge Nation

I like all the impossible films, this is the best of the lot.
This is for me the perfect action film, spectacular stunts, gadgets , fights and a cracking bike chase.
Well written , well acted.
Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg are brilliant.
Not sure if many agree but for me an easy.

10/10

It's definitely the best of the lot, IMO. I liked Rebecca Ferguson the most in it.

Batman v Superman is on Sky Prem. Two and a half hours and it's going to be turd isn'it? Damn my soft spot for Batman movies.

10 Cloverfield Lane is on too. Seem to remember it getting a mixed reaction.

People better stop shitting on Ouija 2. It's really good. 10 Cloverfield is also very good.

The ending wasn't that bad. They needed to tie it into the first movie somehow.

Without encouraging you to ruin it for me, the film plots sound very different though?

Very different. Without the last 5 mins of the sequel you'd never guess they took place in the same universe.

It follows, the babadook and the majority of the new millenia horror movies are crap and does nothing for me.

@pauldyson1uk
Listen up you hipster, Babadook, and especially It Follows are fantastic horror films. As are Hush, The Last Shift, Let Us Prey, Conjuring, Clown etc...

Plenty of good horror films out there if you do a bit of research.

I did agree with the no good horror films post at first , but after thinking about it , I changed my mind there is plenty of good horror if you look for it, all the films above are very good.
Also just starred The Exorcist and the first ep blew me away

Bound (1996): 7/10

This was a decent thriller flick. I swear these kind of noir-ish movies aren't made anymore in Hollywood?

I started that show and plowed through it in one weekend. Absolutely fantastic.

haven't watched those yet... gonna give em a chance.

Also, plenty of decent horror movies maybe, but good, not really!

i rate the house of the devil and we are still here above the unoriginal crap we've been served by Hollywood.

Those two films are excellent. TI West is one to keep an eye on.

Pele: Birth of a Legend (2016)
Great idea, shame about the execution. The guys who created this obviously never watched him as the football sequences have all his goals scored from dribbling with amazing tricks past about 57 players. No, that was more like Garrincha. Who wrote this rubbish? 3/10

Corrected.

I am keen to watch it, cheers guys. I actually liked the first film- a lot my friends don't. I loved the randomness of it.

I love the original. Together with the [REC] movies one of my favourite found footage \ handheld cam movies.

I saw them all back in the day from the local video store. I'd forgotten how homo-erotic Kickboxer was. Some great synthpop montages though, a cheesy villain, romance, beefcake, Oriental mysticism, and yank bluster and cracking fight scenes make for a fun romp. JCVD boogieing on down is brilliant too.

This movie genuinely has one of the greatest laugh out loud moments I can ever remember.

When the police chief comes back to the police station wrapped in barb wire and says "So, which fecker called me old?!" in a thick Scottish accent before going on his murder spree

Besides that it is also a brilliant movie. One of the best horror movies of late I think.

You should try Last Shift. Similar film, but I enjoyed it a little bit more.

I've seen it but I was in such an altered state that I've forgot the entire movie. Downloading it currently and will watch it in 30 mins.

Watched 10 Cloverfeld last night and thought it was terrific

I'm always looking for horror movies

Out of that lot I've not seen Hush, The last shift, let us pray and Clown

Do you promise they are all good?

Arabian Nights (1974) - One pet peeve of mine when it comes to classic Italian cinema is the at times really ropey dubbing, it's especially present in Pasolini's films, and added with the stilted performances in this one it almost went beyond disjointment, which might have been an intentional choice on his part, hard to know. Anyway, it as an enjoyable enough romp, great location shooting, some really fine scenes that were heightened by Morricone's score but sometimes it all felt really sloppy with Pasolini's usual sharp eye absent. My dad told me that people used to flood to cinema to see the latest Pasolini film, even in a small Swedish town. What a time to be alive.

La Piscine - I could see how Guadagnino saw remake potential in this, it wasn't as subtle as A Bigger Splash, the characters weren't as fleshed out and he removed some of the inconsequential stuff. It had an appealing cast that never really came alive. I had been wanting a continuation of the world of Purple Noon, and Delon and Ronet being cast in these roles had me excited but there were no real sparks in this one. Too much sulk, ennui but it had some nice 60's charm and Jane Birkin's long legs lounging around the pool is not to be underestimated.

LaLa Land - the film opens with a flash mob singing and mugging on a busy LA freeway and I was already squirming but it won me back because Gosling and Stone are just so damn charming. After the first twenty minutes it's actually pretty light on songs (probably for the best, Gosling sounds like he took vocal lessons from Russel Crowe, although he plays the pianny pretty well).
I laughed at the opening scene on the freeway. Probably cos I spend way too much time stuck like they were.
Agree with the rest of it. Stone & Gosling have great on screen chemistry.

Star Wars: Rogue One

Didn't know it was an Anthology film i.e. not part of the main new trilogy.

Bored for 66% of the film, picked up a bit towards the end with nice CGI. Some predictable moments with the usual dramatic entrances and heavy breathing.

5/10.
