Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping - hands down funnier than any film released in 2016. The Lonely Island guyys have a rare talent for musical comedy. This was a monstrous box office failure which is such a shame.

Stellan would sell Aleksandr for a cheap handjob and a pack of crisps.

Glad there's no cynical reviews for La La Land yet, I know they'll come. Agree too that it's an instant classic. :)

Surprised that there's been so much negative reaction to this - I felt the same as you. Brutal but effective, it really got to me in the cinema. The first 30 minutes was about as tense as a film can get.
I loved this film. A lot of people disagree though...
Really? I think it's getting generally positive reviews over here - rightly so, it's a really well made film.

Seriously?
It looked kinda crap in the ad

La La Land

Brilliant film. Looked fantastic on the big screen, lovely score, well shot and directed...Gosling and Stone were very good too even though Gosling's a fairly poor singer. Strangely similar to Whiplash in many ways thematically whilst also being massively, massively different in how grandiose it was.

So nobody else has seen A Monster Calls yet?

Am curious to hear some more opinions, as this will let me know how emasculated I should feel for being turned into a blubbing wreck...

Saw it last night but didn't want to discuss it on here afterwards due to the fact that my reaction was very similar to yours seemingly. It's really very good and absolutely gut wrenching. 9/10

Ok, cool, thanks. It overwhelmed me, emotionally, like very few movies have ever done before. I watched it in a small cinema, where everyone was super-quiet throughout and the emotion in the room was tangible. Probably the most intense cinema-going experience I've had. I really wanted to hear some more opinions because it could be accused of cynically jerking a few tears out, with a subject that made it easy to tug on the heart-strings. It felt much more profound than that and I'm glad you were similarly affected.

Making me blub like a little girl aside, I thought it was really beautiful to look at and the performances were fantastic. Especially the little boy and Felicity Jones. I only twigged afterwards that I'd seen her in Rogue One a couple of weeks before!

I was a bit disappointed with La La Land after all the talk of it being a classic. It was cute, and all, but I never really bought into it. I enjoyed it parts of it, especially the visuals and style, but felt the plot and characters were lacking. Stone did a wonderful job of bringing depth to her role because there was none whatsoever in the script.

48 Hours - Haven't watched this in years so expected it to have aged badly but thankfully it hasn't. It's got great action, decent soundtrack and fantastic chemistry and acting from the two leads. Sure there are some genre cliches but mostly because this was one of the first of the 80's buddy cop movies where they hate each other and then like each other. One very cool scene in the police station that's three minutes of exposition all in one take. Good villains, great locations, shootouts, topless hot country dancers and Eddie Murphy breakout brilliance. He is wearing very dodgy shoes throughout though. 9/10

Jane Got A Gun (2016)

Available on Netflix. Missed this when it came out so was glad to see it pop up on Netflix. Bit of a slow burner this one but engaging nonetheless. Set in the Wild West in the late 1800s but without all the sheriff and saloon stuff, poor old Jane (Natalie Portman) has to defend herself from a ruthless gang led by a leader portrayed by Ewan McGregor who's after and her hubby who used to be in his posse. When her hubby is incapacitated, she runs to her erstwhile lover (Joel; Edgerton) for help. Of course it all kicks off when they are tracked down by said gang. This film is very similar to The Salvation featuring our own King Eric and I think I enjoyed them about the same. Natalie Portman does really well with what she's given but she's a great actress anyway and almost perfectly beautiful imo. It will be a crying shame if and when that face succumbs to the knife, but I digress.

I'm giving this a 6.5/10.

My Scientology Movie (2015) - Starring Louis Theroux as he tries to make sense of the cult of Scientology and tries to go behind the scenes but finds it's not as easy as initially thought. He's faced with some obstacles in the form of downright nasty and peculiar characters. I found it a fascinating watch. 7/10

I saw a Theroux documentary once. He mostly asked banal questions and had none of the dry, british wit or colorful personality you'd expect from someone megalomaniac enough to put his name on everything he does. Kinda wished they had rolled in Justin Theroux instead.

Thanks for recommending this, I would have never even known of its existence without it. It's actually a very good surprise, it packs a lot of fun moments (not really "laugh out loud" stuff, but overall very amusing) (actually there are a couple of really funny scenes), and it doesn't overstay its welcome at 1h20, so yeah I'd recommend it if you're a fan of Lonely Island type of humour. I really like Andy Samberg I have to say, bit of a underated comedian.

I don't know if you're been sarcastic :nervous:. I'D BEEN DRINKING!

He's an extremely witty guy with a bone-dry sense of humour. The banal stuff is a front to get the interviewee's guard down. If that didn't come across when you watched him then you need to see more of his work.

That said, I'm not too interested in his Scientology movie. Going Clear was very good and one documentary on this subject is enough for me.

 No I'm being serious, I went in with no expectations, and it was a good surprise. It's a good film, but...
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a disastrous movie title
... is definitely true  Awful title
I remember I gave a gushing review to The Great Beauty after watching it buckled with a beautiful woman's head in my lap. In hindsight old peterstorey was probably right about it been a pile of bollocks.
What did you do with the rest of her body Archie?

Pete was always right so I don't feel like rewatching that one any time soon, there's some films like Certified Copy that I've avoided because I know pete slated them.

La La Land
Finally saw this after looking forward to it for quite a while and man did I absolutely love it!! Visually stunning, great performances and amazing songs. I had goosebumps throughout. I laughed, tapped my feet, got excited, felt sad and even annoyed... Ran through so many emotions. It wasn't perfect though, Ryan Gosling singing wasn't great and the songs should have been spread out more, because the second act was missing them. However I'll put that aside because this was fantastically directed and I had a blast 9/10

Re the songs placement...

I kind of thought the lack of songs in the second half was sort of intentional. It all starts off very whimsical, camp almost, and even though the characters are down on their luck in the first half they're still ambitious dreamers and the music plays a prominent role. Towards the second half though, they're finding success but things outside that aren't going too well...instead of the grandiose music there's more tense scenes with a lot more camera cuts than in, say, the opening scenes continuous shot. Brilliant movie though, thought that whole ending montage scene was absolutely fantastic.

Pete was amazing - I'd post something like 'Have you read *insert book-title here*?' and he'd reply: 'The new translation is awful - instead, try the draft version by Ecuadorian beat poet Yacksplacky Kazoo senior.'
