Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Yep, good film and agreed on Gyllenhaal.
He will never win an Oscar because he isn't a company guy.

Watch Nightcrawler if you haven't seen it. He should've won for it but didn't even get nominated.

Rififi hasn't been mentioned yet, that's wonderful.

Watched Dazed and Confused last night for the first time and loved it. Not as good as the Before trilogy or Boyhood but probably more watchable, so much fun to spend the two hours with those characters - even/ especially the idiots. Hopefully Everybody Wants Some is half as good. Also had no idea about some of the cast - Ben Affleck, Milla Jocovich, Adam Goldberg (meh) looking younger than I've ever seen them. Long live Dicky Linklater!
Alright alright alright...

Feck me Starship Troopers is so good. So misunderstood, seems a lot of those so called professional critics completely missed the point of it. Another Verhoeven sci-fi classic along with RoboCop & Total Recall.

And I'm convinced it was Earth who launched the asteroid into Buenos Aires and not the bugs. Would totally make sense considering the themes of the movie.

Still holds up even today and still one of my all time fave sci-fi flicks. Remember being gobsmacked at the movies when it first came out. Verhoeven has made some groundbreaking classics. Also loved Hollow Man. Showgirls is worth a spin too...and of course who could forget Basic Instinct.

Straw Dogs (2011)

Watched this on MovieMix (Freeview) last night. A remake of the Dustin Hoffman original, this film didn't make any sense. Too many plot holes leaving you very frustrated and screaming at the telly. I couldn't understand why David would not release Jeremy to the locals and even the police officer when he knew there was a young girl missing and this Jeremy was involved?? And why didn't his wife tell him what had happened and why was she not more traumatized after that terrible event? Very poor storytelling and quite disjointed. I expected David to become more unhinged at the end but hey ho.

I'm giving this a 4.5/10.

Yeah, I've seen it. He was amazing in it. His best ever performance and indeed a disgrace he didn't get nominated.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Seen at Odeon in 3D. What can I say about this movie? Well I was expecting to get my ribs tickled throughout but I found myself just mildly smirking from time to time. I think this film tries too hard and too many references to the original with all the cameos kind of spoiled it for me. I'm just thinking if they were going to do a fresh take on the movies they should have left the boys at home. It just seemed like parts were written in for Murray, Aykroyd, Hudson, Weaver and Potts just to include them in the film somehow, though no Moranis. It was ok but not a patch on the original. The chemistry between the characters was lacking and Chris Hemsworth was completely mis-cast...sorry it just didn't work for me. I also found Kate McKinnon very irritating. Still, I managed to sit through it but didn't feel satisfied at all, perhaps I'm clinging to the 1984 classic too much?

I'm giving this a 5/10.

What do you mean by "company guy?" This is news to me.

And yeah, he was bloody fantastic in that.

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)

Second part of a double header at Odeon today (meetings were cancelled so opted to 'work from home'). Even more disappointing than Ghostbusters. This film was more style than substance and really didn't make any sense. You really have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy this movie as some parts are so far-fetched it's untrue. With all their vastly improved firepower and technology etc. from 1996, the aliens are still taken down within hours of landing on earth.........in a 3000mile wide ship, sitting nicely on the Atlantic! These types of films are best kept simple (I enjoyed Skyline better than this!). I was completely underwhelmed by this movie. They could and should have done better. Another sequel is threatened.

I'm giving this a 4/10.

There are some people who are just nominated all of the time by the Academy because they are company people. They are good names to nominate and they do a lot of leg work for the academy. Lots of buttering up and campaigning.

Jake Gyllenhal doesn't bother with that and so he gets overlooked time and again.

Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Marylebone Streep are three that come to mind. Theye are clearly favourites amongst the academy and so get nominated for almost anything they are in.

Untraceable: 7/10
Surprisingly entertaining thriller. Unfortunately the writers just had to let the lead character make a dumb-ass mistake to keep the plot going I guess but nevertheless, the 6.2 on IMDB doesn't do the movie justice. The concept is quite chilling.

Pride And Glory: 7.5/10

Cop corruption movie. I like these movies so yeah, enjoyed this one as well.

A City of Sadness - I had a bit of a trouble keeping track of all the names and seeing as I was pretty unfamiliar with the historical background, I think a lot of it was lost on me. It had it's fair share of moments of subdued beauty though and young Tony Leung was very good.

Legend of Tarzan (2016)

Seen at Odeon. Not a bad movie. Yet ANOTHER film with Sam L. Jackson! How he does it I just don't know. Anyway, CGI is pretty flawless and seamless in this film. They went all out to do the job properly and make the animals look as realistic as possible which helps you to stay focused on the film. Great job. The part when Tarzan and Jane first return to their village in the Congo and are welcomed by the locals was nicely done. Great scenery and story moves along quite nicely. Yeah I quite enjoyed it.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Finding Dory
After the first 20 minutes, where it felt like it was a kids movie, it came to live. Introduced some decent new characters, such as hank the octopus. The ending was funny, not the kind of scene you would expect based on the rest of the film. 9/10

Independence Day Resurgence(2016)

Felt like I wasted 2 hours watching it. I was a fan of the 1st movie even though it had its cheesy moments. The 2nd however has no replay value to me. I hate almost every character in the movie. Even Jeff Goldblum seems lifeless in the movie. Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher have no charisma or personality at all. 20 years later and that was the best they came up with? It honestly might be the worst movie I've ever watched. The plot is too convoluted. The movie probably should have been longer(which would have made me hate it more probably). It's hard to relate with the movie as well. You felt the tragedy kind of hit deep in the 1st movie. It was over the top, but it works. It felt somewhat 'real'. This one was akin to a 5 year old getting his hands on a Hollywood movie and all hell breaking loose.

1/10 putting it kindly.

Also:

Vivica A Fox's death in the movie. I mean really? You had her save that lady and her baby just to die as the helicopter comes and then Hiller watches over it. Fast forward and it seems like her death is completely forgotten. What was the point of that scene?
Somehow Judd Hirsch survives a mega-tsunami and is barely even injured when the kids find him. Um what? Then he drives a bus full of children while an all-out war was going on. Like come on.
Bill Pullman's "speech" in this movie. Absolutely terrible. If you're going to have him give a speech again, where is the emotion? His character was so bland. Then his sacrifice and somehow Patricia Whitmore forgetting her father even dies mere moments later. I could go on, but I cba.
I also hate the fact that this movie clearly sets up another sequel. 1 train-wreck is enough.

Eye in the sky (2015)

Real time movie that deals with a situation where intelligence traced two high target terrorists arming up for a suicide bomb and a girl that might be collateral damage. Decent acting, decent filmmaking. The plot is built interestingly enough around the question of the worth of a live and how to weigh up lives against each other, although it's not explicitely raised. What seemed rather ridiculous was that this question was discussed in a rather implausible manner (the main question of what course of action is better; also soldiers inflicting with generals and generals inflicting with politics - I mean wtf doesn't each know his place beforehand?).

My mind was grinding a bit at times, but if you can zoom out such concerns it might well be worth a watch if you find the topic interesting.

7/10

A Touch of Zen - A beautiful touch of Zen mysticism. It was a bit silly and stiff at times but it was hard not to appreciate the absolutely glorious backdrops, set-designs and free flowing camera movements. You could see a lot of traces of later wuxia films in it, like the bamboo forest scene (House of Flying Daggers).

Can't wait to see this! I've seen every Pixar film so far

Some Came Running - A quite fantastic melodrama, it was almost like a Five Easy Pieces for the postwar generation. Apparently it's Richard Linklater's favourite film so I'll just put his quote here cause I'm too lazy to describe it myself.

It’s one of the great ’50s melodramas, and it’s kind of like a musical without the music, but it has a great score, of course. I saw it in my early- to mid-20s, and it just really affected me. It’s about a guy who goes back to his hometown where his brother is a prominent citizen. He’s a stalled-out, blocked writer, and he’s been a soldier, and a worker, and a would-be novelist, and he’s kind of a gambler and a drinker — this is Sinatra, of course, the conflicted one — and he lives in two worlds. Because he’s a published writer, he has the respect of the local English teacher and her brother — the respectable world of literature — but he really has a soft spot for bars and gambling and floozies and the Shirley MacLaine character. And then you’ve got Gwen French, who’s played by Martha Hyer, who’s the uptight school teacher. So it’s all these opposites colliding — respectability, debauchery… It’s wonderfully melodramatic and beautifully made… It’s about male friendship too. I consider it kind of the first Rat Pack movie, although it’s just Dean and Frank with Shirley around too. It doesn’t have a lot of the other people, but it’s the first one to capture these guys gambling and hanging out and that camaraderie. They become roommates and go on, like, a trip to Terre Haute, IN, to go gambling. It’s just wonderful.

I recently returned to my hometown over the summer so it kinda resonated with me.

Agreed, a totally mediocre effort to remake a classic film.

It's good. I just don't like them.
They probably don't like you either!

Anyway, watched Stay yesterday. A psychiatrist has a patient that wants to commit suicide in a couple of days and disappears. What follows is a visually stunning trip into madness. It's well worth your time, 8/10

Yeah, my Mrs loved McKinnon. I thought she was trying waaay to hard. Mugging in the background of every scene.

Gas the way every left-leaning film critic refuses to slate Ghostbusters because they don't want to give the men's rights gobshites the satisfaction. So many reviews appear desperate to talk up what is evidently a bang average movie.
It's got a mediocre rating from the mainstream critics because it is mediocre. The sad posturing from the hardcore fans pretending the original wasn't shit is the most hilarious element. Like I said originally, it's a crap remake of a crap film.
